Best 9 in NJ
I'm almost tentative to leave a review, since I don't want more people discovering this gem in Jersey City. Most County golf course employees are full of surly, impatient retirees waiting for their next free round. This place is the opposite. It is privately managed, which means that they are true professionals who take their jobs very seriously even more so than many country clubs that I've been to. Steve, the head pro is one of the nicest people I've ever met and every other single person there... I've had nothing but terrific their actions with since I've started playing the course in 2015 when it opened. The conditions are unbelievable! The Bentgrass Fairways and greens are better than 99% of public courses, let alone County courses that you will ever find anywhere. The only drawback is that it gets super crowded on the weekends, Owing in part to the fact that its nine holes plus the unbelievable conditions make demand very strong on the weekends. Play weekdays if you can, other than that the "Jersey City Country Club" - as we like to call it - will reign supreme in Jersey county golf for many years to come!
Course has a nice layout
It was my first time here. Not knowing the course will hurt your score. I will most likely play again, but go around again for a full 18. Course is in good condition and nice layout and scenery.
Great little course in the heart of the City
Course has a little bit of everything for its size. Great backdrop of Manhattan as well.
Steve and the crew rock
Been playing this course since it opened in 2015. Steve and his staff are friendly and accommodating They always hire the best course personnel
AWESOME
Views are awesome! Course layout is great, tough. Love the 3 par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s. Staff was super friendly. Conditions were amazing and finished 9 in 2 hrs flat. This was with me in a cart, 2 guys walking, and a 4th in a cart (staff member). Going back this week!
A Gem of a Course
I first played Skyway a couple years back having discovered there was a public 9 hole course a short Uber ride away. So glad I tried it because it’s a challenging course, with excellent views, great upkeep, and helpful, friendly staff.
This past round (first time out this season) I did 9 riding (they upgraded their carts). The round started out with a brisk wind which calmed as play progressed. The course is familiar to me, but always educational, and skill-sharpening with a few par 5s to keep you on your toes, and deceptively “simple” par 3s that work one’s accuracy. Pace of play is usually very good, with about a 2 hour play time.
I usually play this course as a single, and everyone I’ve been paired with have been friendly, open, and interesting, with a variety of golf prowess from the newly playing to well above my pay grade. They’ve also been locals (Jersey City, Hoboken, NYC), or their guests or travelers seeking a decent public course that’s easily accessible, yet not run-of-the mill. And just such a gem can be found at Skyway.
Fair course in middle of jersey city.
Fun place to play. Good variety in holes. Last couple holes give nice views, but rest of course feels very cramped.
Challenging Test
Narrow and undulating nine hole course placing a premium on accurate shot making. Fast sloping fairways can penalize relatively good shots. Greens are fast but we'll maintained. Course layout is unique, but barely missing the fairway means weeds, mounds and a lost ball or unplayable lie as a first or second cut of rough hardly exists. Regardless, a much needed public inner City course providing a two hour test of one's golf skills. Recommended for it's accessibility to all urban golfers.
Skyway GC in Jersey City
DO NOT play this course on the weekend. The majority of golfers do not know how to play the game and have no level of courtesy for those who do. The staff (rangers) do absolutely nothing to speed up the pace of play. In fact, one of them told us that he hates working the course on weekends, and just brushed us off overtime we asked him to speed the group up in front of us, who had no clue what they were doing. A round of golf should not take 6 hours to complete.
