Tough conditions
This course is in rough shape. I hope the course renovations and investment happen sooner rather than later
Cheap course in terrible conditions
The course is in horrible shape, but it’s cheap so a place to go practice a bit. I would treat this more as an extended driving range than an actual golf course.
The golf enthisiasts challenge!
You really need to be a dedicated golfer to enjoy this place—the name "Rock Creek" says it all. The course is tough in a good way, thanks to the rolling mounds scattered throughout. You might hit a great shot off the tee, but the mounds make it hard to see where the ball lands—finding it is part of the challenge and why the pace tends to be slow. The balls roll quickly on the "Rock Creek" fairways, and the greens also, even with morning dew.
I'll definitely return—the uninspired attitude of the "starter" didn’t bother me. However, there’s nothing to do here golf. The empty store has a drink machine, but that’s about it.
Greens were all damaged and bad staff
All greens had dozens of ball marks and had been vandalized. When I complained staff laughed in my face.
Fun but course conditions are a little ragged
I’ve played this course many times over the years. Staff is friendly and course is fun to play and also possible to get on the course on short notice with can be a challenge in the DC area. This course will always be fun to play but conditions were a little ragged - basically no fairway with grass seemed like rough all the way around.
No Way, Never Again
Horrific greens and fairways. Playing on asphalt is better than this place.
Went looking for a ball and now have poison ivy. I have no idea why folks give this course more than 1 star.
review
Too many mosquitoes and asphalt pathways very bad condition
Lots of work needed
I’m always on the lookout for hidden gems (or courses that just need a little love), I got out for a quick loop at Rock Creek Golf Course in Washington, DC. I made a tee time on the Golf Now app 15 minutes before the round. II managed to squeeze in 8 holes before Mother Nature decided to flex her muscles with an incoming thunderstorm. Here’s my honest take:
⛳️ Pace of Play:
Surprisingly smooth. For a public course in the middle of the city, I was pleased with the pace. Not much waiting on tees, no slow groups ahead. If you’re looking to sneak in a quick nine after work or before brunch, Rock Creek can deliver on that front.
🌱 Fairways:
This is where the course really struggled. The fairways were in rough shape—patchy grass, hardpan lies, and a general lack of upkeep made approach shots frustrating. It felt more like hitting off dirt in several spots, which made club selection and clean contact a challenge.
🏌️ Tee Boxes:
Teeing it up was hit or miss—mostly miss. Uneven ground and overgrown grass on several boxes made it tough to get comfortable over the ball. You really had to hunt for a decent spot to set your tee, especially on the par-3s.
🟢 Greens:
Decent, and honestly better than expected. They rolled fairly true, though a bit on the slow side. Not country-club quality, but definitely playable and the highlight of the conditions. If they could bring the fairways and boxes up to match the greens, this course would feel a lot more balanced.
🌩️ The Vibe:
The course has a rugged, old-school muni charm. It’s a peaceful escape within DC’s Rock Creek Park, with towering trees and a natural layout that feels like you’re far from the city.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re nearby and looking for a quick round, Rock Creek can scratch the itch. But be prepared for rough fairways and rougher tee boxes. Bring your patience—and maybe a few extra balls.
Not worth the drive time
This reminds me of playing courses in the midwest that were poorly managed and poorly maintained. I will never play this course again.
Price confusion!
The price for nine holes and a cart literally doubled over the weekend. Not happy. Rock Creek is a good course that has been let go too long. They are taking care of the greens, and the maintenance crews are great, but too little has been put into the course for too long. The fairways are rough, lumpy, bumpy, weedy. It used to be a bargain, and it was worth playing there when it was cheap, our “local rules” were that you can place the ball anywhere within three feet to find some reasonable grass to hit from… seriously, it was that bad. Just fine when it’s 14.00 for nine holes, but the GolfNow app literslly raised ot to twice that price! Overnight! No thank you. If I’ve got to pay a “going rate” I’m going to play where I can make decent ball contact off of a proper fairway. They are renovating the course, and the plan promises to create a great course, but they certainly shouldn’t raise the prices while it’s going through the renovations!
Can’t wait to play again
The course is undergoing a lot of maintenance but still worth playing especially for the price. The holes can be challenging with elevation being a huge factor, but not overwhelming for those new to golf.
This course is awful
Terrible conditions, hilly, about of golf carts and push carts(which are all broken), overall the worst course I have played. It makes Langston look like a country club
