Royal Hawaiian Golf Club
About
Nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club enjoys a stunning tropical setting framed by ancient jungle trees that climb to more than 100 feet tall. The father-and-son team of Pete and Perry Dye designed the course. There are many telltale signs that this is a Dye course, from the many elevation changes to the varied bunker styles that are utilized throughout. The round begins with stunning views as you plunge downhill into the Maunawili Valley. There are more trees and narrower fairways on the front nine, contrasting nicely with the wide-open back nine. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club's back plays towards the mouth of the valley, offering a view of the mountains and sparkling blue Pacific waters in the distance. It's not an overly punishing golf course but locals and visitors alike have called it the toughest and most scenic course you'll find on Oahu.

Stunning Views
Quite possibly the most picturesque course I’ve ever played. Many blind shots made it especially challenging. The greens could use some love. The practice range hasn’t been available since Covid.
You can’t beat the views
Absolutely gorgeous course. It is golfing through a rainforest on the side of a mountain! Greens were almost unputtable, I wonder if it was something to do with the grass they can grow there. Staff was sup par. Shop closed at 3pm with no heads up, just generally rude to us. No one was there you think for $200+ a round they would be more friendly. No on course beverage cart, range was closed.
Challenging Course
I felt like I was in a beautiful rain-forest or jungle in the front 9. The course is very scenic and beautiful.
The greens were bumpy and had not quite healed after recent punching. The fairways are somewhat narrow and the adjacent rough was tall and very thick grass that could use some mowing. So you need to stay in the fairways or your ball will get swallowed up by the rough. The course.is very challenging so if you can't hit the ball straight, bring a lot of balls.
Amazing
Amazing course beautiful views and perfect greens. Worth every penny. Enjoyed every moment on this course.
Staff was extremely unfriendly.
The guy in the clubhouse was one of the most rude individuals I’ve ever experienced. The greens were bumpy and hopped the entire time. I would not recommend coming back to this course.
Course was closed
Course was closed due to road closure. How do I get my money back?
Not as good as previous times…
Played on 5/9/2024, view is always beautiful and course challenging. Greens were sanded and in bad shape, but the worst was cart path only as the boss was visiting … (don t understand it as the course was perfectly dry)
I played many times before and the experience was better. Still a good course to play
You’re paying for the views, but they are worth it
There are no practice facilities at this course, which for a travel destination when renting clubs is a bit of a bummer. The staff is very short and not super helpful, don’t expect much help there either. Club rentals were Taylormade Stealths, good clubs but $65 is the highest I’ve paid to date for a round. I’d recommend bringing your own balls, you are playing through the rainforest, you’re going to lose a few. Greens are in pretty rough shape, I assume it has something to do with growing that type of grass. Pace of play was great, there was no one out there!! I assume that has to do with the staff and price… million dollar views though. You can’t beat that!!
Amazing landscape
Spectacular course for the views and surroundings.
Some tee boxes you have to search out, could be better marked by maybe placing a colored rock or ball at the bottom of the hill by the cart path to indicate where they are..
Narrow and gotta have a lot of balls unless your target golf is top notch. Fairways are narrow and you won’t find anything if you’re not in one. The lush jungle eats everything up and you don’t go looking.
So many pictures of the canopy trees and mountains that you back up into.
No range to warm up was a little harsh because once you tee off you better know where you’re going right away.
Putting green needed some help and overall the whole place could use a little face lift to attract more customers.
All in all it was really cool
Greens in lousy shape
Had to play cart path only
Greats views
Embarrassing conditions
For the money that they are charging, it is embarrassing that their greens are unplayable. If you want to visit to sightsee there is value. But as a golfer, you will be very disappointed.
Absolutely beautiful course with some green issues
The course was amazing! The front 9 greens were pretty unplayable, but the back 9 was fine. Either way I’m glad I went. No cart girl and the restaurant was closed and under construction.
Fantastic views!
What a fun course! Expect to get wet (slight mist/rain typical on the Windward side of the island). The clouds/mist do not detract from the experience and make you feel even more that you are in a tropical rainforest.
Amazing views of the foliage and fantastic mountains surrounding the course.
Great, friendly staff!
There are much better courses for the money
I got paired with a great couple. On the front nine the course had “cart paths only”. They did not have flags with laser yardage targets, so yardage was very difficult on a “target” golf course. Anything that missed a green or was barely off a fairway was a lost ball. The fairways were a 2 out of 10 for condition, as were the greens. The greens for the entire 18 were like putting on shag carpeting. Some of the spotty fairways seem to be tighter than the greens. The saving grace on the back nine was that you could at least see where you were hitting it. Will not play this course again
Beatiful layout, poor condition
This is simply one of the most beautiful courses I have ever played. Unfortunately, the owners know what they have in terms of views and do not keep the course in good condition. Greens had not been mowed in multiple days - was like putting on shag carpet. Unacceptable for the price. No restaurant, no cart girl, closed driving range, etc. I took some beautiful pictures, so if that's the main reason you want to play, then take lots of pics and enjoy. If you are coming for the golf, look elsewhere.
Must play
Amazing views that you just cant get elsewhere. Half of the course is in a rain forest and the other half provides amazing vistas. A challenging layout encourages accuracy and offers many risk/reward choices. Some greens were not in top condition.
Jurassic Park Golf
This course is literally nestled inside the rainforest “jungle”. Most of the fairways are narrow, and not much room for error on approach shots. If you’re a few yards off the fairway, the jungle eats the ball, if you’re slightly off target, the jungle eats the ball. So expect to lose about 2 to 3 times the number of balls you usually lose per round. If you’re just a beginner or weekend warrior, you’re probably not going to enjoy playing here.
Before your morning coffee even kick in, the second hole is an island green par 3. The guy in front of me sent 3 balls into the water before he gave up and drop one next to the green. On one par 5, my drive didn’t even reach the fairway. It was just short, and hit the retaining wall.
The condition of the green is anywhere from horrible to OK. Lots of barren spots on some, and very uneven. The speed is VERY SLOW. Check out the practice green to get a sense how slow it is. The grass just grabs the ball.
Tee times are not super tight, but there are a lot of tourist couples having a good time. Husbands & wives wanting to take pictures and videos, hit few more shots to try to get to that island green. But I got to play by myself. Pace seemed to be slow, but I still finished in 4 hours. Just a lot of waiting on tee boxes.
The view of the surrounding is gorgeous, you are surrounded by the mountain ranges & the rain forest
Play golf at Jurassic Park
The views from the holes are incredible. Definitely worth playing if you want to see the vegetation in Hawaii. But the greens are not in that great shape and some of the blind shots are really tough. Take a lot of balls you’re gonna lose them.
Bucket list course!
Can’t recommend this course enough. Amazing views and really challenging course that makes you plan out every shot in advance. Any time someone screams to celebrate, you’ll think they got swallowed by a T-Rex.
