Course Highlights
Indian Springs stands out among nine-hole courses for its challenging layout featuring elevation changes, two par 5s, and consistently well-maintained fairways and greens. Friendly staff and outstanding value for money make this Connecticut gem a course worth returning to.

Indian Springs Golf Club in Middlefield has been owned and operated by the same family since it first opened in 1964. With a terrain of rolling, tree-covered hills, the course is as scenic as it is fun to play. The nine-hole layout is player friendly enough to appeal to players of all skill levels and there is an alternate set of tees to play an 18-hole round. Though many of the fairways are wide and forgiving, there are a few tricky blind shots that will test your accuracy. The par-5 second hole is one of the most memorable. It leads you uphill before plummeting downhill to a green protected by three sand traps. Indian Springs Golf Club's second par 5, the tree-lined fifth hole, is also notably tricky. The fairway edges along mature forests, leading to a sharp dogleg right downhill to the green, which is surrounded by trees.

Poor customer service

To be fair I like the course and would recommend it to a friend but with a caution.

My complaint and reason for a poor review is due to the desk person letting us start the round without telling us about how slow the round would be. We played after work and should have had ample time to finish 9 holes. There was a league out on the course and the pace of play was so slow we only got through 6 holes in two and a half hours.

If we were informed before starting the round we would never have started. Total waste of money. Don't know if I'll be returning.

Supplies Plenty of Challenges

I’ve reviewed this course several times. Here is my take on it after today’s round:

Course Strengths and Toughness:

The up and down trek on this roller-coaster nine holer certainly makes for an interesting tour, as the slopes add much diversity to the holes. Several of them should also captivate your interest. I find both the opener and closer to be good par-4s, with the first delivering a strong wake-up call to any player whose head is not yet in the game. The ninth begins with an inviting and steeply downhill tee shot, yet the pitch into a raised green (fronted by a massive, deep bunker) requires control and finesse.

Perhaps the best hole on the course is the tight par-4 eighth, which will require all of your skill to earn the four. Slicers will not appreciate the tee shot–with trees and OOB set in close to the fairway on the right–but the approach into this hole’s elevated green is classic. The fairway at the par-4 fourth runs straight to the hole, uphill then down, turning up again just prior to the raised green, and punishing shots that come in too low–which means very long putts “backward” when the pin on the front. To boot, seven is an outstanding par three: it plays downhill and is highlighted by a large, undulant green that is all too easy to three-putt. While the par-5s here don’t live up to the other holes, each affords majestic views when you are on their hilltops, preparing to hit downward over the steep slopes that lead to their large but heavily tilting greens.

A further challenge: playing away from the steep downslopes that are often found near these greens. One example comes at the second hole: on the left side of the putting surface, the steep embankment falls into no man’s land. To make matters worse, the falloff behind the hole is quite steep, while the front and right sides of the green are protected by bunkers. If your ball misses this green on any side, then, the likelihood you’ll face a difficult pitch is rather high.

Another key dimension is the nature of the greens. Here, they tend to slope sternly from back to front with varying degrees of intensity. To add complexity, some of them slope from side to side as well. And they run on the fast side.

Conditions: Excellent on greens and tees, good everywhere else. Dryness has affected the fairways.

Some Conclusions:

Although nine hole courses can be overlooked because they may be stereotyped as lacking rigor, this is one that no one should underestimate. It will supply golfers of all abilities a challenge on each hole. Above all, putting these greens–or trying to–may cause you agony more than once before the round is over. I’ve found that even excellent golfers may find it an achievement to match their handicaps here.

tough course so beware

The greens were fine, not much rough, the sand traps were hard crappy sand and some of the fairways have diabolical tilts. Every hole is different and it's run by heat people

Well maintained hilly course with fast sloping greens

Fairways and greens are in incredible condition way November 2024, especially since we've been in a drought for a while now. Played a few times this past season and have not been disappointed. Generally a hilly course. The greens are extremely challenging at times since they are fast and sloping. I almost feel like I'm in a greenskeepers revenge. Very rewarding to 2 put, and you have to be really skilled to get a put in if you're 10 feet or more away. They need a bell on the 5th hole, which has a unique dogleg right down a very blind hill to the green.
