this is the condition of the 12th green. This is standard condition on all greens Photo submitted by hendu11 on 08/03/2023

while the greens and tee boxes continue to go downhill, the greenskeeper has the time and money to put these pointless bushes and rocks behind the 11th green. No priorities. Photo submitted by hendu11 on 08/03/2023

Much Improved
They have done a lot to improve this course over the last couple years. Great value for the money. Staff is very friendly. I would recommend giving it a try.
Getting better every time.
I play Black Birch once or twice every year. Going back to when this group took over from Banner, I have seen improvements to the course conditions every visit.
The greens were in nice shape. Tees and fairways are getting there.
Keep up the good work guys.
Decent Course
Great course for the average golfer. Fairly straight and open. Unfortunately the course is a little rough, especially on the back 9, but for the money its a nice place to play. Staff is very nice also. No water on course so be advised to bring your own.
Good course
Overall course is good. Some of the fairways need work, but overall it's a good course. Would define play again for the price. Great staff very friendly.
The Greens are great, the layout is good, and the fairways are adequate. Good value for the buck.
The old Banner Lodge Golf Course
Had fun playing this course. It's been 10 years since we last played it. Ownership/management making the effort to keep improving the course. Pro shop was very informative and honest about the course conditions. Greens were in great shape and rolled very true although quite slow. They were a little spongy but we did not come across any green that wasn't in lush condition. We rolled the ball over due to some rough conditions in the fairways and the traps need sand - the pro shop had told us about the traps. Overall very nice experience. I hope people give this course a chance to continue to improve.
Nice course
Course condition has improved greatly in last two years. Greens are very good.
Pro shop personnel are extremely courteous and very helpful.
Banner no more...
I am impressed with the work the staff is doing on this coarse. Lots of fun just stay in the fairway. Black Birch is a was worth the money! Keith in the Pro shop and Allie in the resturaunt are great folks...
Upgraded course, in great shape
Played here this week and was very impressed about the ongoing improvements. There are several older reviews, which were probably accurate at the time. But I was there on May 24, 2017, and this is in great shape.
Excellent greens and most fairways, many maintenance folks working on the course. Not at all dried out, fairly lush fairways and roughs, in most cases. There were some dried out spots along the sides of some greens and fairways, but 80 or 90% is good grass. Really a remarkable change from when I played here a few years ago.
I grew up on this course, learn to play here over 50 years ago. Then it was just a nine hole course. Eventually expanded to 18 holes. Played there regularly for many years, and it was never really well-maintained. I was just happy to get out and play. It was close and cheap, but not taken care of.
Went back this week for the first time in 10 years and I was extremely surprised at the improvements that have been made. Highly recommend anyone in the area to give it a try. Greens were in great, great shape. Many improvements, such as several well laid out asphalt cart paths. Realigned several holes to make them fair, but challenging. Cleaned out many areas of brush and undergrowth. Ponds are well-maintained, with good landscaping. Will definitely go back next time I'm in Connecticut.
BTW, I am just a hacker, rarely break 100, but love to be out on a course. Haven't played a lot lately, and not familiar with other local courses. But, if I lived in the area, I would be out here regularly. If you had played here in the past few years, and were turned off by the condition, and haven't played here this year, give it another chance. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Decent track, excellent price
The price was excellent - finding a Hot Buy makes this totally worthwhile. Proshop staff was friendly as could be.
The course could really use some concentrated turf work. Tee boxes and fairways often had spotty grass and hardpan, but this is parkland golf not links. Patches of unmarked ground under repair were apparent, so I couldn't tell if this is a course coming back from disrepair, or a course going to seed. The other players and many prior comments agree it was better than before, and if it continues to improve this would be a little gem where you can score well and enjoy the outing. The greens were in great shape, though still not especially receptive. Putts rolled true, though they weren't cut especially close which made grain direction a real factor in getting the ball to the hole.
The layout has some hidden ponds and trouble so look carefully at the hole diagrams before teeing off or take along someone who has played Black Birch before.
All in all, a worthwhile day especially for an early season, last-second decision to play. Did I mention that the $20 fee included a cart? Can't find a better bargain.
I'll play there again, especially at the price I paid.
Great price
I thought the green and tee boxes were in great shape. Maybe it's early in the year but the could have cut the grass shorter just off the fairways. I like the lay ou and the price was excellent. Staff is very friendly. Will be playing here again
A good work in progress. Course needs some work, but the owners are aware. Really good people to deal with.
We always have fun!
We are average golfers and this course allowed us to take our time and work on our individual problems. The attendant is always nice and accommodating, we will be back to work on our skills!
A nice walk in the woods
A very comfortable rural golf experience. New management has improved the course, the greens are in very nice shape this year. Informally is the rule here.
Worth a visit, the views are nice and the price is right.
Nice course and staff
I had never played this course but had heard of it when it operated under it's previous name. My son and I were looking for a "deal" on GolfNow and came across this course just over an hour from us and decided to take the trip since it was about 1/3 the price of most of our local courses.
First impression when we drove in was "This is very nice. Why are there no cars here? Are they closed?". We were greeted in the ProShop by a nice guy and we bought some tees and a Gatorade and headed to the 1st tee. It felt like we were at a private club on a Tuesday. Not another golfer in sight.
Now the course starts out fairly nondescript with a series of shortish par 4s running parallel to each other with room for a wayward shot on either side of the fairways. This actually is kinda nice for those of us who don't get out much to play as it offers a fair chance to "warm up" and keep moving if you have a bad shot. There certainly birdies available as well as doubles or worse (we had all of the above).
I would say, in general, the course is not overtly challenging and if you hit it straight low scores should come. 7 is a challenging hole and 13 could add some strokes depending on wind direction. Otherwise all the holes are straight forward and what you see is what you get.
A few downsides.. Distances seemed "off" on a few holes. Not sure why, Also several fairways "stop" 100 yards from the green . I assume they are letting the course come back into shape (I had heard it was not in great shape under the previous name) but still seemed strange. Bunkers lacked sand but they say sand coming in next month for bunker "freshening" so that is TBD. Also a few bad tee boxes (9 comes to mind) but I expect those will improve.
Upside is the staff is great. We actually sat at the restaurant for lunch after the round and the Buffalo fries were quite good.
Black Birch was worth the trip for us and I would recommend the course based on customer service and the long term upside as well as the chance to card a good score and build confidence. Look for deals online. I think, by July, the course will be better still. It's a hike for us but we will likely try to get there one or 2 more times this year for sure. If we lived closer we said this would be our "go to" course for afternoon and evening 9's.
Friendly staff
We were late due to traffic, but the staff was very gracious, and allowed us to play as if we were on time! They were happy to have us there, and made us feel welcome.
