The Best Public Course In Fairfield County and maybe the State
Putting greens, great driving range. Practice sand traps. Excellent instruction.Meticulously maintained course. Larger greens.
cold and windy
Great track...slow pace because people spent too much time looking for their balls and taking more than two tee shots on the par 3. But it was a great day even though it was very windy and cold.
Sterling Indeed!
Golf in Fairfield County can be pretty expensive along with everything else (because we're all millionaires, right?). Was able to catch a $30 deal for Sterling Farms w/cart . Normally it would run me $70 as a non-resident. The course was in great condition and the greens were nice and firm. We finished in 4:30, which for me, coming from playing nothing but LI courses, is great. However, for CT on a weekday is pretty slow. The foursome in front of us watched way too much TV golf and didn't know the meaning of "ready golf". Our playing partners lost their cool on 13 and never regained their composure. The guys behind us left after 16. A few simple things could have sped up the round about 45 minutes. 1. Play ready golf. (Go to your ball. Figure out the distance. Pick your club. YOU DO NOT NEED 10 PRACTICE SWINGS TO HIT A WORM BURNER 50 YARDS) 2. Park your cart between the green and the next hole. (This should be logical, right?) 3. Play the right tee box. (Is it really that much fun to play the tips and never reach the fairway?) Sorry for the rant.
A MUST Play!
I play a lot of different public golf courses and have heard many times as to how good this place was so I was excited to finally get a chance to see it since I was in the area on business.
I didn't have a tee time, so I went to the course early on a Sunday (never expecting to get out) just to check the place out and hit a bucket of balls at the range. I went to the cashier who told me it was very busy, as I could see from the amount of people around, and had him put me on a waiting list in case someone needed a player. He told me if he could get me out to "listen for your name over the loud speaker at the range". After just finishing my large bucket, about 30 minutes later, I heard my name announced! By the way, the range is spectacular with a synthetic turf landing area and target greens, it's even double decked and heated, only disappointment was that you hit off of mats instead of grass.
I teed off at 8:30 am on a Sunday and the golf course completely lived up to all my expectations. Great conditions tee to green, great layout with extremely picturesque par 3 holes and very challenging overall. The 3 guys I played with were regulars and play there every week so gave me a bunch of good tips.
There is a reason this golf course gets such good reviews and it's because it is really a great public golf course. The staff both on the driving range and golf course could not have been more accommodating, there was even a ball spotter like every 3 hols to help you find your ball!
We played in about 4 hours and 15 minutes and I can't wait to go back, just hope I am as lucky to get a tee time on a Sunday morning.
lovestoplay
Play course once / wk in season. Am local and have been playing this course since 2006. Course is kept in excellent condition by superb grounds staff, and is serviced by above average friendly and very professional management organization and staff. Pro shop is well fitted however personnel could use some friendliness motivation and training.
Unfriendly staff
Staff are annoyed to see you. I guess they prefere if no one was there. That way they won't have to help anyone.
Great course but way to long of a round
Course conditions overall were great with a nice added gps system on the cart. Pace of play was horrendous though having played a 5:30 round on a Wednesday afternoon! Can't imagine what it's like on a weekend
Good value, will return
We enjoyed the course, especially for the price. We played a Tuesday at noon, so the pace was expected to be good... and it was as our round was 3.5 hours for a threesome. The carts are great and new. The layout makes the play pretty easy with some small challenges present. I will return for sure, especially with the golfnow special.
This golf got some difficult holes
Very good golf course to play during the week. I played on Tuesday which was very fast round. conditions of the course was very good
GPS in cart with good accurate yardage
overall nice course. The GPS in cart in helpful and seems to be accurate. standard greens fees are over priced but good value with golfnow. we played for $29/each
Fun Course
I live in Stamford and play this course often. The Staff is generally very friendly and willing to work with patrons. On a weekend, rounds will take between 4.5 and 5 hours and I have never finished in less than 4 hours during the season. During this recent experience we were on hole 8 when a ranger came over huffing and puffing asking us to pick up the pace. We finished the front 9 in less than two and he really had no reason to rush us.
Sterling Farms
Got a great deal on an afternoon tee time on Golfnow. It was a Wednesday but it was very crowded. Pace of play was rather slow and round lasted about 5 hours. The course itself is excellent with clean fairways and nice and challenging greens that were pretty quick.
People there are friendly and the driving range and putting greens are very nice as well. Highly recommended.
Nice Place, but much too slow!
The course is short, but still challenging and in good condition. The big problem here is the pace of play! 5 1/2 hrs. is just NOT fun. I will not go back for that reason alone.
This course is in very good condition very friendly staff
I would play this course again if I had the chance. Just play last week and enjoyed the round with my buddy and someone from the area. He gave us good tips around the course which was helpful, thanks Guy.
Have not played Sterling in 6-7 years since moving away from stamford. I am proud to see that it is still well a gem.
Had a great round. Everybody from the driving range to the starter was very friendly and welcoming. The course is in excellent condition.
Great Muni track
Ok, I will admit I play here all the time. And the resident rate cant be beat,
Pros:
Sand traps are well manicured and fluffy
Greens are usually consistent
Forgiving layout
Very well landscaped.
Has a putting greens, pro shop, bar, restaurants, instruction and DRIVING RANGE
Friendly staff
Cons:
Often excruciating pace of play weekends. 5-6 hour 18 rounds.
Rough is thin.
I love this course!
I love this course! I used to live in Stamford so played here quit often. When I saw the encouraging fee on Golfnow I jumped at the opportunity to play again. The course was in very good condition for this early in the season. The greens were fast and true with only a little bumpiness as evidence of past aeration. The new cart path layout is a wonderful improvement as are the new electric carts with GPS.
Great Local Course
For a muni, this is a great place. Better then any course in nearby Westchester,NY. Layout was awesome with many different types of holes that had you using each club in your bag. Par 3's tended to be long and challenging. Par 4's were not just grip and rip drivers. You had many doglegs requiring some thought. Water in play on may holes of the front side. Great view of the Long Island Sound on the 10th Green. Bring a camera!
Painfully slow pace
2 hours + 40 minutes to play the front nine. Just unacceptable pace of play & they even advertise 2 hours + 10 minutes on the first tee. I'd play the course again but never again in the afternoon.
Great greens
Course - A minus
Staff - B
The doglegs make a not so long course challenging even for long hitters.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Yes stop and take a picture of the LI Sound...that oughta speed things up.
