Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Dang power lines!

Not that bad a layout until you get to 16 & 17. Don’t think they fit with the rest of the course. But then again there are those annoying power lines and poles everywhere.

Noisy and odd!

Had a good group, played OK, pace was good, but the power lines are a bit distracting! Road noise from the adjoining Interstate also was a negative at times. Had a good rate, so I played it again.

Traditions will challenge you

Over all the course is in good shape. The greens and sand traps are in good shape. In some places along the fairways the rough is thick. Will play again

Great Course for the Money

Course is about 5 minutes from home so hard to beat. Cost is fair. Pace was slow for a mid morning Friday, took a little over 5 hours to finish up 18. But had fun the whole time. Part of the front 9 is adjacent to the nearby highway which was a little distracting to play near. Could barely hear my foursome at times. Hard to fully the course for that. Loved the hole layout as it offered unique challenges compared to some other courses that throw dogleg after dogleg at you. Was cartpath only due to previous day rain which may have attributed to the slower play. Will have to try again! Parred the Par 3 over the lake that I drive by every day. Always a win!

Greens are rough…

Greens were in tough shape, lots of ball marks, prior pin locations were not put back in flush with the ground. To top it all off, greens are very fast. It was like playing on bubble wrap. Staff was very friendly and professional, and the course looks like it could be good in the future. Challenging but not overtly difficult layout. Fairways and rough were in good shape but the greens and bunkers (rocky and hard) were a wear for the worst.

Pace of Play

The course had been a favorite of mine but very poor green conditions as well as Tee box conditions and now having 3 groups on a hole is cause for concern. Of all the courses I play this has the worst green conditions caused by no one fixing ball marks. The marks are so deep it’s disgusting golfers ignore repairing these.

Divots & Ball Marks

All in all, a fun round. Challenging course, fun to play, and in reasonably good shape compared to most in Connecticut under $70. I found half the staff to be very friendly, the starter not so much. Had that ritzy club pro cockniness that is completely unnecessary when getting golfers out. For the first time in a while, I was shocked at the amount of unreplaced divots and ball marks throughout the course. I found myself repairing at least 5 marks a hole, and probably could have spent hours out there fixing others.
