Great place to play
GCI is a great course. it was in great shape; a fair test and a challenge for all skill levels. love this course!!
A poor value
No course should have fairway grass so long that it is difficult to find your ball when hit in the fairway. I've played many courses of this style and this was by far the worst. For the price they charge this course should be manicured. It is no wonder that it was poorly attended on a weekend where it was difficult to get tee times elsewhere.
One of my favorite local courses
I love the challenge of this course, the set-up, and it's usually in great shape.
What a Deal!!
GCI is one of the best deal's on golfnow.com
I travel 45 minutes and this is worth every minute.
Staff is great, greens are tough, and it's always windy.
What a gem!!
Pretty Tough LInks-style course
I don't play links style courses very often. This course has very few trees or water hazards. BUT - what it does have are large mounds covered in HIGH fescue. If your ball goes there - - it's GONE. The only way to find it is to step on it. I felt lucky to only lose 3 balls. Greens had been aerated 1 week or 2 ago but they were not unplayable.
Hard course!
It had rained the days before and it was very soggy! We are average to good 4 some and we all lost a ball in the rough! It was a long course and a few rather hard pins. For sure get a drink and a snack! Very nice Staff and great bar.
Great links course
One of the better links courses in the area. Course is still in great condition, even after the yearly aeration. Pace was a bit slow and had to wait on most of our shots during the round. Otherwise, a good round.
Aggravating
The fairways were in very good condition. Sand trap water drainage is poor after a rain day and was very hard. Felt like I was hitting out of clay. There are many small hills down the fairways with high prairie grass. Once your ball enters this you might as well drop another and take the penalty. It's very hard to find your ball and other ahead of us made play very slow looking for their balls. I most likely will not play this course again for the price. The time you pay the Golf Now fee the value isn't worth this course.
where is the water?
I played here last year, and thought that it was just an oversight. It was hot, in the 90's, and there are no trees on this course.
Again playing a few days ago, it was pretty warm(80's) , no water, no drink cart. It says a lot about how much they care about their customers. Maybe they need some one to pass out on the course to get a message.
really fast & undulating greens
I love this course. Great value for money. I am a senior. Greens just great & fescue is impossible. I am a high handicaper.
Average experience, slow pace
The course was in fair condition, it does not drain well. Some bunkers with standing water. They let twosomes go off early (8 am) which causes a back up immediately. Ranger did what he could but his hands were tied. They need a policy to not send out twosomes in the morning. Then to top it all off, our cart began to die on the 15th and we had to push it thru the parking lot after finishing. Will not make the trip out here again, not enough value for $60.
very nice track
Greens fast but fair. Fairways in good condition. Helps to have course knowledge. Staff was very friendly. Overall a great time.
One of my favorites
I started playing this course in the late 80s and have always liked it. I just wish they hadn't caved in to the whiners and left the fescue mounds alone.
Odd Combination, but it works
Course is in beautiful shape, though you won't find much shade. The course rewards long drives and very accurate approach shots. Par threes are set up quite long. Not a lot of hills or trees - and I wouldn't call it links style either - but a fun course to play. Seems to move pretty quickly early on weekends.
Nice Link-Style Challenge
The Golf Club of Illinois (GCI) is a nice, challenging layout, presenting both easy scoring opportunities and shots requiring players to weigh their options carefully. The course was in great shape for my round, with the fairways tightly mowed and the greens at 10-11. I recommend GCI as a "should play" option for discerning golfers who looking for a fair test.
Good course
Took my pops out to play on Sunday morning. We played from the blue tee. It wasn't crowded at all, and pace was fast, which I liked. Nice fairways but hit it a bit off into the rough, you'll lose your ball. It's a long and tough course. Trees don't really come into play but there's plenty of other hazards. It's a challenging course but really fun. The greens were ok. I would definitely come back at least to challenge #11 again. 675 yards from the back tee! Wow...
Course is in great shape
Its a long drive from Chicago but its worth the trip. Course offers fast greens that are in great shape. Course is very challenging but it plays fair.
Wide open and in great shape
Shot a round based off a friend's suggestion. Very nice all around. Course in great shape and friendly/helpful staff. Reasonably priced. Definitely be back
Good links-style course
GCI has a traditional links layout with tight fairways bordered with overgrown fescue, few wooded areas and fast, undulating greens. Few par 5s (3) but several long par 4s (11) that are not driveable. Clubhouse is dated but serviceable.
