Redtail Golf Club

The layout of this beautiful golf course is actually pretty nice. When you start off and taking the scenery, you have a beautiful farmhouse in the background. Of a few holes and it looks pretty good until you stand over it. The fairways they’re a little rough meaning there about as thick as it can be for a fairway and as far as the greens go, they seem very fun and challenging, unfortunately are in horrible shape and just weren’t fun or challenging they were more like I hope it doesn’t hit something and go off-line because I might’ve made a putt if it did actually take the line I wanted it to. The greens suck and the bunkers are even worse. If you wanna call them bunkers. They have rocks bigger than the ball you’re playing with in them and unfortunately, as you know, you can’t pick them up and throw them out before you hit your shot so beware, it’s kind of like playing in the desert in Arizona except that’s the desert and you expect rocks there. This is the Midwest meaning in Chicago area and you don’t expect rock exercise golf balls in the bunkers. They clearly exist here unless someway somehow overnight somebody took out the 10,000 of them that were in there. I’m not talking about pebbles like I said, golf ball sized rocks in the bunkers everywhere. It’s too bad because I really wanted to like it. I would’ve loved to have owned a home on the course and had a membership and just snuck out and played whenever but believe it or not the garbage condition of the golf course the multiple times I’ve inquired about it has kept me from buying a house on it more than once. The houses are big and not bad looking however if I’m gonna be on a golf course, it might as well be one that’s worth playing instead of one just worth paying and not enjoying. That’s not for me. It would be like doing a disservice to myself for buying a house on a golf course that looks great and plays terribly. That’s a total mistake on me. So yeah the golf course is not so great. It looks great. It just doesn’t play like it. Take my word sucks.

Redtail is a beautiful golf experience. A haven for Redtail Hawks, Sand Cranes, Deer, Turtles and a variety of other wildlife. The course is challenging with lush green fairways and greens. Only negative was that the rough could use more fertilizer for weeds, Kudos to the brand new clubhouse, restaurant and bar serving great food and drink. Wonderful staff, as well.

They're building a new clubhouse, that will improve the amenities. Cart path needs repair. The course can be challenging. I will go back when the grass has greened up in the spring.

Clubhouse under construction but temporary one is a very nice trailer. Staff were very hospitable and greens in very good shape. Irrigation projects should help with water drainage and not too obtrusive right now.

I've golfed at Red Tail for years. It is a challenging course that is getting a much-needed clubhouse upgrade. This also includes renovation of the driving range, so no warmup.

I played this round on Dec 21st with a temperature of about 40 degrees, so I wasn't expecting much. The course was in very good condition considering it was the first day of winter. There were only a few of us on the course, so pace of play wasn't an issue.

Not bad for a pre-Christmas round of golf.

Course and layout were awesome. Only issue which will be a positive is they are building a new clubhouse. Loved experience

Redtail has a great layout, none.of the back and forth idiocy. The property itself was not at its best yesterday. The clubhouse has been torn down and is currently a vacant lot, so they now have a temp office trailer substitute. The fairways had these large 8 inch x 1/2 inch slice marks throughout the course, I'm assuming they're for aeration, but I've never seen it done like that before. Like everywhere, the green were full of unrepaired pitch marks. The Bunkers were not the best, the one I was in, had large stones in it. I look forward to going back next year when the course when is in its top form.

Love the course staff was friendly and helpful. However, the website is not accurate and the phone number is disconnected. Had to go through Golf now and book. Our teetimes cost an extra few dollars but more aggravating not having a phone number to call direct.

The course was in great shape and is a good challenge. I’d been once before many years ago so had forgot how every hole is essentially in the surrounding homes backyards. I got a deal on golf now so couldn’t pass up. Despite the good course conditions and good price, I won’t go back. Not a fan of courses layouts in people’s backyards.

I travel a lot for work, so I get to play some nice courses. I just moved in across the street from Redtail and it’s a nice little gem. Decent test of golf with fantastic greens. They roll true and even after a day of hard rain, they were still rolling very true. Oh and hey, can we please repair our ball marks? The course can only do so much…But overall, especially if you can get this at a hot deal, I would play this course. I played Turnberry, which is super close (i’de pass) and most of the courses out in Crystal Lake/Cary; Redtail has the best greens in the area. They also do a great job spacing out the tee times. There seem to be a ton of outings and leagues here and they have a bar open even though it’s under construction. So, if you have the day or an afternoon off, I would try to get on for a nice relaxed 18 hole round.

The course has a great layout. Unlike many other courses where it’s death by straight par-4s, Redtail has very different looks on each hole. Slopes, narrow fairways. dog legs, hazards etc.

Pace of play is decent, depending on day of week. Sunday PM is slow. But it’s a function of the skill level of the golfers who come out and not because the course packs ion tee times.

The cart beverage comes in quite regularly and is well stocked with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The person manning the cart is friendly and efficient.

My bone to pick with the course is the maintenance and the lack of upgrades. Cart paths are torn up and nasty. Bunkers are filled with dirt and not actual sand. Drainage, especially near the greens and in bunkers, is poor. The clubhouse is nothing more than a shack. They’ve been in business for many years now, and have steadily increased their prices to the point where it’s on par with with some really good courses in the area, and business has been very good. However, none of that seems to have been reinvested in the upkeep of the course. Just repaving the cart paths, and filling bunkers with real sand would improve things dramatically.

We have played Redtail before but this was our first visit this year. Overall we enjoyed the round but not as much as we have in the past. The good - pace of play was fine (4:15), fairways in good shape, tees and bunkers ok, starter was friendly, the layout is great. The not so good - there is construction going on so the clubhouse is a construction trailer in the parking lot, the greens were pretty beat up compared to prior years with lots of ball marks and spike damage. To be fair, we played after noon but it felt like we spent all day repairing the greens. We'll be back next year and play earlier in the day.

This was the only thing missing from making this course a must play on a regular basis.

Kenny and team know how to run a golf course. From : grounds keeping, staff friendliness, making you feel welcome and just creating an experience that makes one want to book the next round there before you leave from the round just played!

When the new clubhouse is finished I'm betting it's going to be really tough to get a tee time!
