Nice course but slow...
Course is nice. Wide open. Used to be a links style course but they removed most of the tall grass. Now it's wide open. Not easy but not nearly as difficult as it could be. Sand traps are just terrible. Sorry guys but that needs to change... pace of play was very slow. Overall nice course but could be really nice with a few upgrades.
Greens too firm and fringe too long
The greens were fine for putting. However, it was a challenge to get onto the greens because the greens are so firm: the ball would always roll off into the fringe. And the fringe was was too long and narly. Also had trouble with the sand traps because the layer of sand was very thin. Sorry to say, I was disappointed.
Good option in Algonquin
Course is a good layout, challenging rough. Your game will be tested. Greens were in rough shape due to players/groups not repairing ball marks -100s of old, untouched marks on each green. Par 3s were even worse. Could be helped by staff or marshall reminding/reinforcing the etiquette.
All things considered
It was very wet yesterday when I played. lots of pooling of water in spots.
Outside of that the course was in pretty good shape.
Great course
I enjoy playing this course, as it plays long ( if you like to hit from the back tees) with plenty of hazards to keep you honest.
December Bonus Golf
We managed to score some GREAT December weather in northern IL! Weather in the 50’s sunny and dry.
Course was in great condition for this late in the year! As expected, it was busy but still done inside of 4 hrs.
Golf is better than work
Let me think about this...golf or work? I will pick golf even though it was windy and cart path only since the course was fairly soaked. Not much they can do when mother nature continues to give us more than enough rain. Greens were super fast. At least we had a decent amount of sun despite the below average temperature. Rough was deep...not quite U.S. Open deep but getting close. Maybe they couldnt cut recently with rains. Good value for money spent. Will be back when it gets warmer and drier.
SAND TRAPS
Sand Traps should have sand in them!!!! They shouldn't be as hard as a rock!!! They should actually have sand in them and should be raked daily!!!
I was in the sand several times and that's not normally an issue for me, I'm a good sand player. When there's hard ground and an inch or two of sand however and that's wet, compacted and hasn't been raked it's not a lot of fun to try to get out of the trap with any normal kind of sand shot.
Other than that though, enjoyed the round and liked the course.
wet summer
Wet spots
overall condition good, rough long in areas due to not being cut because of rains. Greens good but as usual players not fixing ball marks. We each fixed our own plus 2 more on each green. traps need more sand but that is also typical due to wash out
Course Review
I hadn’t played the course in over 15 years. The clubhouse was great. Even though the course was very wet the greens were true and quick. My son and I were the only people on the course on the front nine so playing in 50 minutes was great. We were able to use all of our clubs since there was no roll. It’s was an awesome round of golf in under 2 hours. That seldom happens but we wanted to play GCI and it didn’t disappoint.
Better
I played this course several times over the years and noticed that it seemed to be deteriorating. I decided to give it another try, because I like the layout and this time I was pleasantly surprised by the improvements they have made. In my last review I was mostly critical of the sand traps, this year they are much better. Keep up the good work GCI.
