Convenient but awful
The course was in rough shape but it was to be expected after such harsh rains the 3 days prior. However, the course lacked basic amenities that should be expected for $36 a person.
I've never golfed there and made 2 wrong turns while attempting to get to the next hole. There's no signage or direction. Then the old guy cutting the grass is running a tractor 3 ft from the tee box without any consideration for the group teeing off. Finally, ordered a brat and a Gatorade at the turn. The bartender pointed at a hot box with brats in it and tongs. I grabbed the tongs and asked for a bun. She handed me a sealed bag of hot dog buns and scissors to open the package.....better service and amenities at park district courses. Save your money and golf just about anywhere else.
If you enjoy 6 hour rounds, golf courses that allow and encourage fivesomes, a mediocre link’s style course that was built on a plot of land too small to be conducive for a link’s style course, mud traps as opposed to sand traps, one that is overpriced, rangers that do nothing when one asks them politely to allow better golfers to play through a fivesome that are slower than grass growing, a golf club pro that forbids better/faster golfers to play through his “so called club champions” citing the reason as they are the club champions and they have played the front nine in 2 hours and 14 minutes which was complete and total misrepresentation of fact which is evidenced by the fact that it took the club house champs 1 hour and 20 minutes to play the first three holes on the back nine, then this is your “Dream Course”. You should save yourself a lot of time, aggravation and money by staying away from this course. There are far better courses in the area that are properly managed with competent staffs that know and enforce proper golf etiquette. Chalet Hills, Blackstone, Foxford Hills, Highlands of Elgin and Oak Grove just to name a few.
Liked the course
My only complaint is that there wasn't a Ranger on the course to maintain pace of play. We were a threesome, playing behind a foursome and there were at least 2 holes open in front of the foursome. It backed up the entire course, and I honestly lost focus on the back nine. Losing focus is on me, the course not having a Ranger to regulate pace of play is on them.
I will play this course again.
Great Course, great staff
Great challenging course. Greens and fairways are in great shape. Staff is extremely friendly. Pace of play is great. One of the best courses around for the price.
It was a nice challenge however the pace of play was awful. However, after speaking with a ranger he got it going which was much appreciated. Like most courses in the area, the traps are lacking in sand. Good course although a huge change from its early days.
OK
Basic suburban course with lots of homes to look at. Course was in excellent shape. Dont' miss the fairway as the rough was high and healthy. Been here many times and will be back.
Fun course!
Love this course. Well planned out and can be challenging. Rarely crowded and pace of play is great. The wind factor is always an issue for all courses, but especially this course. I always look forward to the 678 yard Par 5 when the wind is not such a factor. Have parred it only once and that is when there was no wind (on in 4 and a 1 putt... lol). Greens are true. The Club House needs a makeover... very dated but clean. Look forward to my next round!!
Wet
There is no drainage on this course. It was horriblle standing water on greens and in every fairway. I took a friend and he quit after three holes. I would not suggest this course. Its useless if it rains even days before.
Outstanding.
It was my first time on this course. I was greeted by a wonderful staff upon check in. She took time explaining the course lay out to me. The course was in excellent shape for this time of the year. Well worth my time and money. I will be back. Highly recommended.
Amazing!
Challenging Golf course, Nice clubhouse, friendly staff, great rates, great food. What more could you ask for?
GCI in nice shape except for bunkers
With all the rain Friday night into Saturday morning the course held up well for our 1030am Saturday time. We were most fortunate that many golfers cancelled because of the rain and we teed off 15 minutes early and got around in slightly under 4 hours. Normally GCI is a 5 hour plus round because the blue tees are 132 slope almost 6600 yards and most people have no business playing them. Usually conditions are hard/fast on this treeless "Ted" Nugent wango tango....but with the rain the course played a lot longer. The green complexes are really interesting and there are lots of bunkers/gorse mounds all over the place.....one of the best Nugent designs (and I've played many). Folks in the pro shop, bar and the beverage cart were all very nice and welcoming. GCI is a fun play....the greens were in really decent shape....the rough was a tad long but again just fortunate to experience GCI with a light tee sheet/cloudy conditions. The back nine always slows down and if the sun is out it makes for a long very hot round with no shade. I like this course....greens complexes are challenging for chip shots and you can read the breaks fairly easily. 6244/128 red tees provide plenty of challenge and strategery. Bunkers definitely need restoration and are below average....4 stars.
Quick Greens
Tee Time: 1:20 on a Saturday ($35). My second time playing Golf Club of Illinois (the first time was earlier this year). Don't let the vague name fool you, this is a great links style course. Small rolling hills, wild grasses, and bunkers make GCI a fun track to play. The best part though has to be the greens which are sneaky fast and roll true. I don't know if I have a favorite hole, but I will say that the Par 3's are enjoyable and the 18th is a great way to finish out the round. This course is about a 30 minute drive from my house, but well worth it. Hit the on-site range if you're looking to get some practice in before and make sure to get a few putts in too (seriously)!
Fun course at a great value.
Bought a tee time to introduce a friend to the course which I have played before. Unfortunately it rained the day we played (can't blame GCI for that). The course holds up really well in the rain and with no one else on the course, the pace of play was as fast (or slow) as we wanted. The course can be demanding in windy conditions placing a premium on low boring shots into the wind. The only trees are those that line the course but there is plenty of tall fescue to catch and hide your golf ball. Tip -->> bring extra golf balls "just in case". There are multiple tee boxes so the course accommodates golfers with all skill levels. The club staff were all very pleasant and friendly. The only negatives were the condition of the driving range (lousy tee boxes), some of distance markers on the course were suspect and last several of the tees on the course were soft and mushy - most likely due to rain and that lack of mowing on the day we played. It is a course that you have to play twice so on the second round you know what to expect on each hole. Remember to pick up a course book in the pro shop before your round.
Interesting course
Fairly challenging but fun course. We played the day of the course championship, so greens very very quick, although the pins were in random locations so it was hard to get a true distance to the pin. Most holes were straight, but bunkers and hills made it interesting. A lot of balls rolled off the hard, fast greens. Saw the cart girl many times and beer was reasonable. The driving range is grass, but basically sand in all areas and hard to hit from. Wish the carts had GPS.
Course needs work
First time playing. No sand in the bunkers and greens rock hard. Approach shots landed in front of greens and rolled off the back. No need to fix ball marks as none were made during the round. Seems like it's a nice course just the conditions turned me off. Beautiful day but no cart girl or water jugs to drink from on the whole course. It's was a Saturday and I would think someone would be out servicing golfers. Clubhouse staff was very nice and food was good!
Horrible Condition
Pace of play was a 5 1/2 hour round. Marshals did nothing to help. 8 people playing in the same group. Greens had dirt showing in bare places. Terrible experience. I wouldn't pay $30 to play this course much less the $47 they charge. Never again.
Golf Club Of Illinois 6/19/16
Father's Day and it was busy. We played early. The groups in front of us were a little slow. Course was in very good condition. Lots of variety on this course. Several very long par 4's and the longest par 5 in most of Illinois at 647 from next to back set of tees. As a link style course wind is always a factor. Highly recommend (pricing is very good for this course).
Good course, disappointing day
Pace of play was awful. We had to ask an employee to tell a group of guys to let us play through. They were taking 9+ shots each to get to the green and were constantly searching the tall grass for balls. The cart girl didn't move. She sat on one hole on the back, we didn't see her until hole 12 and she never moved, said hi, looked up from her phone, etc. I went in to grab a beer at the turn with my buddy, he was served immediately, then she walked away, served two other people that were sitting at the bar, then served a golf course employee, then asked me what I wanted... It was just a Bud Light.
The course was in great condition and the greens were awesome. The experience was enough where I probably won't be back.
Dry as a bone after all the rain. But plays slow due to the walkers. 7000 yards is a haul for seniors or anyone to walk.
Maintenance out as always mowing collars weed eating tee boxes as you take your swing.
