Awesome course. Super slow.
I played on a Tuesday and got stuck behind 5 groups of four. Course was awesome, just extremely slow.
Surprise for this course
I was looking forward to playing this course as it has been a very challenging course and in good condition. The round started out bad when there were no carts available (I don't know why they didn't have more than 35 available). The round took 5 hours and because of the cart shortage, our tee time was 20 minutes later. I was appalled at the condition of the driving range. The grass didn't look it had been cut in months, the mats were old and in terrible shape. For a course this good, I would be embarrassed by the condition of the driving range. The first tee had ant hills on it and some of the sand traps had weeds growing in them. I know there had been a lot of rain lately but a lot of the sand traps had minimal sand in them and a lot of stones. I would stay away from this course until they do some maintenance on it and would caution anyone wanting an outing there due to the limited number of carts. Otherwise, still a very challenging course to play.
pace of play
Ranger came by at the start of hole 4 stating that 2 groups of 2 will combine. That never happened. He also said he was done and will not come back around. Also we ended up behind a 4 some who thought they owned the course. They had no sense of urgency and were 2 holes behind. Called pro shop but they didn't pick up. This will be the last time my 4 some will be coming out to this course. Foxford Hills is just around the corner. Why come here when you can enjoy a normal 4 hours max round there. No one likes a 6 hour round except for the group that believed they owned the whole course.
Chalet Hills - Unsung Ken Killian Design in NW Chicago Suburbs
The Good: Sporty Ken Killian design in northwest suburbs of Chicago has a little more elevation than most in the area. Excellent variety in holes including strong Par 5's, some very challenging Par 4's, and decent Par 3's including the 17th with a peninsula green! Very good course conditions and large greens that putt smooth. Nice clubhouse with full restaurant and bar has some fantastic 19th hole views. Nice, friendly staff and above average on-course amenities with multiple restroom areas. Very good value for quality of course with nice off-season and internet specials.
The Bad: Course does not take lots of rain well. Some holes can be a little quirky and driving lanes through trees that are almost unplayable. Strange setup to the check-in process and slow pace of play. Practice facility is only marginal with no short game area and mediocre driving range. The cart paths have some of the worst pot holes you will ever see. No GPS or pin placement assistance.
The Verdict: Chalet Hills is another great public option in northern Chicago burbs. Tough, fun course to play for all skill levels.
Best Hole: Many great Par 4 holes, but the closing Par 5 18th is a severe dog leg left that is pure "risk-reward."
Tough but fun course
Slightly wet from morning rain so greens were manageable. Course was in good condition. Pace of play was great for a Saturday.
4.25 Stars - wonderful conditions
A burly 132 slope from the white tees Chalet Hills is always a challenge. It's a very well routed interesting track. Over the past several years the greens here have been very consistent - smooth (if folks repair ball marks correctly) and speedy. Given the amount of rain recently the greens did seem to get chewed up a little bit with observable spike marks around the holes this day. Tees fairways and rough in nice shape. Sand traps are okay as well. Refer to my previous reviews of this course for other tips. Course value - $40 to $50. Pace of play many times is an issue especially if you tee off after 11am or noon. Yesterday took 450 - playing anything further than the white tees on the course is way too much for many of the golfers who frequent this place. Decent clubhouse with above average beverage prices. Small locker room with a shower. What detracts from this place is that the driving range never seems to be open.....plus the general/slow pace of play here. So knock it down 3/4 of a star. For a course of this caliber, quality and conditioning having to warm up at nearby Foxford Hill's range is a tad onerous unless you take a few shags and go down to their overgrown range area and lose them......highly recommend this track always enjoy my rounds here but if you don't tee off early in the day just be prepared to stand around and wait a lot.
Really Challenging Course
Way better then I expected, fun to play lots of trouble but places to put your shots. Very scenic. There drink cart was always available. Try it you will enjoy it!
Windy, Wet, and Wonderful. Great green conditions despite aeration
Fourth time playing this course and although the day started very windy, conditions improved, cleared and firmed up nicely after a lot of rain forced cart path only conditions. Our threesome still finished the round in 4:27 without waiting much if at all on any hole. Greens had been newly aerated using the newer narrow slit style aeration technique and you couldn't expect them to roll any more true or quick than they were today. It would be nice all courses adopt this method as it would virtually eliminate the unfavorable conditions found post aeration. Can't say enough about the layout and it takes a few rounds to be able to feel confident about your approach on a few of them. Well worth the drive for a quality golf experience as we found at Chalet Hills on this day. Looking forward to returning!
A nice day golfing...
Enjoyed the course and the day. I was surprised they didn’t put tee markers on the boxes. But the greens were in nice shape consider ing how early it is in the season.
Zero
Set tee time for 7am on March 28th. After snafu of going to wrong course I got there at 7:34 Much to my surprise there was nobody at the course. The tee markers weren’t even out. To make matters worse I have not heard from the course or GolfNow about the payment that was made. And that is why this titled zero. Not happy. Did I mention it was an hour drive one way. Enough said. Won’t go back.
A layout with a lot of variety it would have been nice to have tee boxes marked but it was very early in the season.
Beautiful course awesome staff
it was one of those indian summer day, loved the course and the staff at the proshop was super friendly and nice.
Golf in December?
Amazing condition for December in Chicago. Great to sneak in 1 more round.
a lot of fun
the course offers a challenge on almost every hole without being unfair, a good shot is rewarded an errant one costs. The views are worth the green fees
