A variety of hole designs with challenges on every hole
This was my second time playing Windstone and I really enjoy this course. It is not very long (6626y from the tips; 6092y from blue) but there is a challenge somewhere out there on almost every hole. There are many elevation changes both up and down, water on at least a third of the hole, and trees on every fairway. Most of the fairways are wide enough for a mishit here and there but if you spray your shots, you will lose a lot of balls. The greens are A1A Bent and roll well with gentle slopes on most hole with a couple more dramatic. I played in November so the greens were not cut short and were average in speed. I would imagine that in fairer weather, the greens would be a bit faster.
I found it strange that I played every par 3 with the same club as the yardage being 5 yards apart on all 4 holes. Other than that, a variety of tee shots are required and a variety of approach shots depending on the green location uphill or downhill from the fairway. All in all, this is a very playable course for any handicap.
One more strange item about the club. There is no locker room for either the men or the women. There is a pro shop and a grill with bathrooms. Come ready to play at this course!!
Good Course Conditions; Nicely maintained Bent Greens
This was my first time playing WIndStone. I heard from others both bad and good about the course. I had to see it for myself.
The course is laid out in a wooded area with natural hills and elevation changes. The first hole has a dramatic downhill tee shot but most others were slopped much less dramatically. I don't recall any blind, uphill tee shots. The fairways are somewhat tight but not overly so. There is often room to miss a shot left or right without getting lost in trees -- but not too much. Trees are on almost every hole. Water is in play from creeks and ponds. This is definitely a course you need to keep your slices and hooks in check.
The greens are wide with a few two tiered. I found that they generally were easy to read and not super fast. All were consistent in speed. For the first time playing, I got a feel of the greens pretty early and it helped with my round.
This is a private course but public play is offered. If you play with a member, the fees are a bit lower. I heard that there are about 400 members and my host said that weekend play is slow - 5 hours rounds are not unusual he said. I played on a Monday in a twosome at 3.5 hours.
