Rough but better
This is the second time I've played Fresh Meadow in nine days. Still rough around the edges on the back nine. Front in way better shape. But it's a great time and value for a 35.1 handicapper like me. Shot a 103 and I was happy. Had a blast. Friend carded an 82. Good times. We did hate the dirt traps, Sand is a rumor. tough to hit out of. But, overall, it's a good bargain and fun. Played in four hours flat on a scorching July 6.
The worst.
Stay away from this abomination. It’s not fit to be a cow pasture.
Not so Fresh Meadow
OK, we had a great price, $27.49 per man with a cart for each. The course was rough. Horrible fairways and greens on back nine. Sand traps are dirt traps. Found rocks in one. Front nine in better shape. Overall, it’s gone downhill. Pace of play was poor. Hackers aplenty who were playing from tips.
Not recommended
Used to play this course in the past was always in pretty good shape. Course is not taken care of very well . Sand traps are dirt not sand didn’t even hit out of there when in trap Course was very dry even though rained night before . Facilities were bad the clubhouse was in poor shape at least from the outside needs new roof Course needs attention. The only thing good is that it only cost $ 45 Otherwise its a pasture
Great value for the money
$37 for a late morning round with a cart, cant beat that! Nice course, not too difficult. some water but lots of sand! Definitely will go back
Conditions not great
Years ago I played Fresh Meadows several times a year. I had played there today for the first time in a few years. Unfortunately, the conditions were substandard. Sand bunkers were more dirt bunkers and looked like they had not been raked in a week or more. The course had long dead grass laying all over from the last time it was mowed after not being mowed for far too long and both the fairways and rough currently are too long and need mowing. Better maintenance is needed.
I always forget why I dont come here
Is it so hard to cut the grass and clean up clippings? The rough was a joke! Grass clippings just consumed the rough and couldn’t find a ball to save my life. Want to know why a round takes 4.5/5+ hrs? Its everyone searching for their ball, only 5 yrds off the fairway!
Joke. Shame on you Arcis!
I will not be coming back
I have been looking for a course within 20-30 miles of house that I could regularly play that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I paid $18 + $10 cart fee for a 5:40 tee time and was playing by myself. I got to the facility early to hit some balls at the range and it was there I knew there might be a problem.
First and foremost - a medium bucket of balls cost me $16, almost as much as the twilight walking fee for the course was. But my two biggest issues were many of the balls that were loaded into my basket were broken. As in the casing was cracked or just missing in places. The second issue is they were out of water. I went to pay for a couple of bottles of water and all they had was booze, and a shoddy selection at that.
I was then told I needed to drive to a different parking lot to get my round started, which wasn't a big deal. However, the pro shop is in rough shape. I had to check in through a barely cracked open window and almost missed my tee time because no one was at the desk. When someone did finally come they answered the phone and I had to wait another 5 or so minutes. I was able to buy some water and some tees and got my round started.
On the first hole, I hit a drive down the right side of the fairway that ended up rolling in to the "rough." Here is my biggest issue with the course. I lost the ball because the grass is so tall/thick that you almost need to be over the top of your ball to find it. This goes for balls in the fairway and balls in the rough. In addition, there was thatch throughout the course which made it even thicker and made finding drives, even in the fairway, pretty hard to find. The bunkers don't have sand in them, instead there is rocky fill type dirt. I hit 1 ball into the fairway on the 5th hole and refused to hit the ball out of it because there were so many rocks - I didn't want to damage my club.
Even though I was riding and playing by myself, it took me 2.5 hours to play the front nine. That isn't really the courses fault. There was a two-some in front of me playing, what it appeared to be, their first round of golf. In front of them was a single player who was walking.
"You get what you pay for" rings loud in clear when you play here. In my opinion, if they could manicure the grass better, the course would be playable and I might return at the price I paid, but I lost atleast 4 balls on drives I hit into the fairway. It's unacceptable.
My saving grace last night wasn't anything that happened on the course, although I had a decent round. There is buona beef directly across the street which I stopped in for dinner. Had that beacon of hope not been there, my recollection of the course would likely be even worse.
Embarassing
First off, anyone from the area knows this is a hack course and you're probably going to have a 5 hour+ round unless you're going early. The course is in embarassing shape, rough so high all balls are lost. Walking 18 on this course feels like a 20 mile ruck march in the jungle. Sand traps without sand. I even found dozens of dead fish on one of the fairways from flooding the week before. The clubhouse is a joke, has a huge tarp over the roof on the backside and looks condemned! I appreciate being able to get out super early, but this is merely an on course practice session, not real golf.
Would not recommend
2nd time playing this course. First time was the first Saturday you could play golf because of Covid 19. When we played the first time,, I was so happy to be outside and therefore wasn’t as critical of the course condition.
Staff is friendly, Course has an average layout and Round takes 4 - 4 1/2 hours on the weekends. Played during Phase 2 and 3 of Covid 19, so really can’t comment either way on off course amenities. Roof of club house looks in disrepair which may explain the reason for the condition of the course. Round of 18 cost is $45.00 walking.
My biggest issue. with the course is the course condition. Grass in the fairway was cut high and Fairways cut grass was narrow. Fairway grass was so high that I had a hard time finding my ball a few times when it was in the fairway. Given the length of the rough and all of the clumps of grass, you usually spent an excessive amount of time looking for your ball or simply could not find your ball no matter how long you looked.
I am a solid bogey golfer and would not recommend this course unless you are a low handicap golfer or a golfer who rarely hits the ball off the fairway.. With many courses in the area at or below this price point, I will not be coming back.
My Go-To Course
This course is definitely one of my favorites around! The manager Dan has been exceptional for the past few years. Last year Dan gave me a 4 person complimentary round of golf on my birthday because the course was way too busy that particular day in the summer (plus I showed up late to my tee time). The course is also pretty difficult so it’s a must to come hit here.
Crowded
I doubt this place even had scheduled tee times. There was a line of four groups to tee off. Had to wait 10-15 minutes for each hole group in front of me had people they were waiting on and so on. It was a mess spent over 5 hours and was only through 13 holes. Last time I go here.
Skip it
Do not bother playing here unless you like a hay field. Had always had a poor reputation but now its out of hand. Literally haystacks in the fairway. Abandoned the round after 9 holes.
Surly staff, at a unkempt track, with a price point thats uncompetitive make this place a no go. Go anywhere else. Chicago City Courses are better in every aspect.
