Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

place is in dire need of maitence
Miles should be indicted, they won't tell you there are at least temporary tee boxes, the greens are beat to death. Typical of Golf Visions mantra
Needs a lot a work
This the first time I played there this year. I played a few times last season. The condition of the course is considerably worse. There were many tees not used. The ones that were are in terrible shape. Much of it is leveling because it has settled. Muddy areas because standing water. Those should be filled with limestone at least temporarily. Management has to make Herculean effort to take care of these problems. If this park district there is no excuse for these problems to get worse.
We are currently working on improving the course and appreciate your feedback. We hope in the future you will give us another chance.
Poor condition
Played here years ago, and disappointed in the condition. I understand many tee boxes were reseeded and had to us temporary tee boxes. But many fairways and greens were "chewed up" and very dry. Glad I had a discounted rate, or would have been very unhappy.
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for coming out and playing. We appreciate your feedback regarding the condition of the course.
Worst In The Burbs...
This past labor day myself and one other took dozens of pictures and confer that Settler's Hill, in its current, un-maintained condition was the worst course we ever played. If I could give a zero, I would.
We both play 4 to 5 rounds per week at many of the areas golf courses. None, with the same weather conditions subjected, come marginally close in negligence as this course. There is one course in Bartlett, which has historically not been reviewed well. Let’s set the record straight…it is exponentially better maintained than Settler's Hill through Golf Visions management.
I sincerely want readers to understand the extent, from start to finish, of how badly Settler's Hill is being maintained by Golf Visions Management and Kane County Parks.
Candidly, now that I've had some time to consider this, I not only feel it is appropriate that the round attempted should be refunded, but the unused vouchers should be credited/refunded. As it turns out, the weekend tee time rate at the course itself would have been a 20% savings, but I needed to use the vouchers before October 31, 2016 (expiration).
The course website and marketing materials for the deal boast a superbly maintained golf odyssey. This is false advertising.
A complete waste of time and gas/mileage, as well as, the undue frustration resulting from each of our losses of a half dozen personalized Pro VI balls that hit rock hard dirt in the expansive areas in fairways and bounced to who knows where or were marked/scuffed like they hit gravel.
I feel that if you are going to offer golf course deals, they need to be playable courses.
From the time we got to the course and directed to the 'ready' carts it was a nightmare. 1) The carts in the ready line all had mud on the dash and seats and trash in the cup holders, baskets, and storage areas under dash. 2) 95% of the tee boxes were complete disasters. They were either all sand or they were muddy and sandy or they were rock hard with no turf. It was virtually impossible to get a tee to be inserted properly and it was extremely difficult to get sound footing. 3) The grass was unevenly cut, which was obvious that the blades on the mowers needed to be changed or sharpened. There were 2 inch lines of grass that were one to two inches higher than where the blades actually cut. The clippings were not cleaned up and obvious signs that the clippings were long enough to be 2 weeks of growth. The ends of the clippings were not cut they were torn, so the turf that was visible (not much) showed signs of browning from the tearing vs. cutting. The ball could not roll true. Also, the monuments at the tee boxes with various yardage had three or more weeks of high grass around them from where the mowers could not go. Areas were up to 10 feet by 6 feet that needed trimming. 3) 90% of the fairways were 35% or more unplayable. The mowing was uneven and there were expansive rock hard dirt of 20 to 40 yards long by 20 to 40 yards wide (no turf). Many fairways are challenged this time of year, with some burn out, but all of the one’s I’ve played are at least 95% better than Settler’s Hills fairways. Also, there are numerous large tractor tire ruts (damaged areas were up to 8 feet long and 3 feet wide) that were either gaping wounds or filled with water and mud a foot to two feet deep. Since some were filled with mud and water and others were not and since much of the fairway was bone dry, I can only assume the watering program is not properly implemented. 4) 70% of the greens were not puttable. Most greens have some issues, but these were horrible. The pins probably had not been moved around the green in at least a couple weeks. The 6 foot circumference around the pin was damaged with ball marks, soft spikes that had dragged across the surface, putters/clubs banged into the putting surface from other frustrated golfers, and almost muddy around the cup itself on the more shaded greens. A third of the bottoms of the cups had been broken, so that the flag could not sit properly. When the wind blows the flag/pin blows around the edge of the hole, damaging the green surface, and making it virtually impossible to make a good rolling putt drop. 5) The elevated Par 3 #16 Green could not even be seen because there was so many out of control weeds and plant life growing at Tee Box level that the flag itself could not be seen unless you got on the very edge of the elevated area and got on your toes. That being said, it was like a blind shot from the pure sand and hard dirt tee box. How the two foot circumference around the hole could be almost like mud and the edge of the green (30’ x 4’) be burnt out when the hot afternoon sun would be shaded out is beyond imagination. 6) The bunkers were in horrible condition as well, they were likely unattended to for 10 or more moderate to heavy days of play.
This was by far, the worst course I can remember playing, ever!

na·ive
Sounds like somebody brought a measuring tape to the course
Settlers Hill Sept 2016
Course in good shape, great staff. Slow play front 9, great on back.
There is no way the golf course went from 0 to hero in one week. Obviously either someone who has never played golf before or someone who works for the course or one of its affiliates.
Really in bad shape
We played in the am. The course is currently in very bad shape. Several tee boxes closed for reseeding. Fairways with many bald spots. One temp tee was the forward tee so the par 4 was shortened to 250 yards. Very bumpy, bouncy, beat up greens. Lots of crab grass in the rough around the greens and the sand traps were not well raked. Skip this course for now.
Thank you for taking time to leave a review. We are currently working on improving the conditions of the course and hope you will give us another shot in the future.
Wet Course
Great course, I've always enjoyed the challenge of Settlers Hill. However, because it rained heavily early in the morning, the course was cart path only, backed up, and sopping wet on every hole. My shoes were soaked by the 2nd hole and of course it affected my play. Just wish we were informed how wet the course was and we may have opted to not play.
Thank you! We appreciate your frequent visits to our course. We apologize for the unfortunate weather conditions. If you are curious about course conditions in the future please feel free to give us a call and we will let you know how it is. Thanks again. We really hope you continue to enjoy your rounds at Settler's when it dries out.
Great obstacles
A good course with terrible hotdogs and kind people.
Hi Norma, thank you for the good review! We pride ourselves on our greens and upholding great customer service. We really think our course and staff stands out above all else - including our hot dogs. We hope to see you again soon!
Good layout, bad shape
The layout of this course is interesting, lots of hills and elevation changes, especially the par 3s that all seem to drop over 30 feet. Some interesting dog legs and lots of elevated tee boxes and raised greens. However....the grass on the entire course is in horrible shape. The tee boxes are dirt, and the fairways have large areas of dead grass with some kind of disease I assume. Overall it just doesn't seem to be taken care of, although the layout has a lot of potential. Also the practice green has flags stuck in the ground but no holes???? Weird
Thanks for taking time to leave us a review. The course definitely has its share of interesting holes. We are always looking for ways to improve and appreciate your feedback on our tee boxes and fairways.
Not what it could be.
This course, while interesting, was in such poor condition that playing it was an unpleasant experience. The value was poor and the booking fee too high. Would not recommend unless greens fees were substantially reduced. Very poor amenities too.
We are sad to hear that you had an unpleasant experience beyond our interesting layout. Sometimes the weather gets the best of our course conditions. If you decide to come back to us, make sure to check our websites for monthly specials and discounted tee times. We hope you will give us a chance again soon.
Was one of the better courses at one time..
Settler's Hill has definitely gone downhill the past few years. This course used to always be in great shape, however that is not the case anymore. Most courses that are operated by out of town management companies seem to meet the same fate as this place,........they all turn to junk. I wont be back. Random standing water, greens beat to you know what, burnt fairways, inconsistent rough. How hard is it guys? I know GolfVisions has money, they need to invest it in their courses or else we'll stop showing up. There are plenty of other options in the area.
We are sorry to hear that your experience has gone downhill these past few years. The unfortunate weather has been tough to beat this year. We are always looking to improve this course because we want our golfers to have the best experience possible. We appreciate your feedback.
Great experience
Enjoyed the round, a wide variety in course difficulty which made interesting! Would definitely play again!
Thank you for taking the time to write such a great review! The course can be difficult but always fun to play! We look forward to having you back at Settler's Hill!
Fun course.
The course has challenging par fives, cliff par 3's and very fun par 4s.
Thank you for the 4 Stars! We hope to see you back out on the greens soon!
lots of fun
settler's hills is a fun course to play, with a lot of elevation changes, and tough greens. however, they don't have sand bottles on the carts & you really need them to fix the divots cause I noticed players in front of us not replacing the divots. also players should be fixing their divots on the greens which both of these are pet peeves of mine. we played as a threesome, the course was busy but we got done in 4 hours.
Thank you for the 5 Stars! We are glad to hear that you find Settler's Hill to be a fun course! We always want out golfers to enjoy their time out on the greens!
Nice course with a more challenging back 9
Not a bad course with a good mix of elevation changes and hazards. The front 9 is more simple, the back 9 has a few more challenging holes. Can get a good deal during the week, slightly overpriced for the weekends. The course was in pretty good shape, especially the tee boxes and greens.
Make sure you buy water or Gatorade at the pro shop before you start. There was no beverage cart, it was near 90 degrees and extremly humind and there isn't a water cooler to be found anywhere on the course (pretty ridiculous).
The turn is after the 13th hole instead of the 9th.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a revie wand all the feedback! We are always looking for ways to improve. If you want great deals on tee times make sure to sign up for our eClub which offers great specials on our tee times!
A little run-down
The layout of the course is unique, and the greens are crazy. The cart paths need to be replaced.
Thank you for taking time to leave a review. We are currently working on improving the course and appreciate your feedback. We hope in the future you will give us another shot.
First play at Settlers
Good course for the money. Staff members very helpful and friendly. The greens need work many ball marks not repaired and need water. Few holes need some strategy to score well.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review! We love getting feedback from our golfers since we are always looking for ways to improve! We always offer great specials on Tee Times so make sure to register for our eClub to take advantage of these deals!
Good track, fun course
This course is always fun because of the layout, built on a closed landfill with elevation changes. The course is in good condition.
One improvement needed is the pin/cup combination. Most of the cups were worn so that the pins were not fitting tight and sitting at an angle in the hole; needs to be replaced!
Glad to see that you always have a fun time while playing at Settler's Hill! Thank you for bringing the pin/cup issue to our attention! We hope to see you back out on the greens soon!
Up and down
This course has a lot of elevations changes. Some fairways are a little tight but most have generous landing areas. The greens were in great shape, but they are never flat and have plenty of undulations.
Thanks for taking time to leave a review! We work hard on the course, so are glad to see you found our greens to be in great shape. We hope to see you back out on the greens soon!
We appreciate you for coming out and playing and for taking the time to leave a review.
