Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Very Slow Play
I took 5 hours to complete an 18 hole round. Way to long!!!! This was on a Wednesday afternoon!!!!
Challenge!
Love the layout of the course, it’s challenging at all aspects.
Challenge
Great course and very challenging!
Love this course!
Impressed From Friday’s Round, Came Back On Monday
I don’t have too much more to add from my 6/28/24 review. I was so impressed with the conditions on Friday, I came back to play on Monday.
The senior rate was $3 cheaper on a Monday at $40.
Stonewolf Has Made Some Significant Changes
Significant changes have been made at Stonewolf. It is in the best shape I’ve ever seen it. The tee boxes were some of the best I’ve played on all year. The greens have really come around. It looks like they have been topdressing the greens with sand. When you walk on the green, they feel softer than they used to. You still see some sand on the surface but they putt very well. With all these accolades, it doesn’t mean the course still doesn’t have some issues, which I will go over later in my review.
Clubhouse changes. They are really promoting the clubhouse as a wedding reception venue. They have replaced the flooring with new wood. The bathrooms and hallways have been renovated. They have changed one end of the pro shop into a snack shop and beverage area, with less emphasis on golfing apparel. There is a large digital clock on the counter where you check in and pay.
Fairways. They have improved immensely too, however, there are still some issues. Drainage issues in several fairways, where there is no grass. Holes 1& 3 are the worst. They have really made the Hole 10 fairway better than it used to be. There are still areas of weeds that should be attended to. The only fairway that is a train wreck is hole 3. Weeds, bare spots – it looks awful. It does not look like they are even trying to do anything to improve this fairway. You have 13 very good/decent fairways and then you have this one. The fairway bunkers on hole 16 had weeds in them – unacceptable. There is erosion near several cart paths but hole 6 is the worst. Some areas of the cart paths are in need of some repair.
Other changes. On hole 13, they have cleared out most of the cattails and the area is no longer a water hazard. Just a large area of burnt-out looking grasses and weeds. On hole 5, there is a new black & white house built behind the green. It makes the hole look better. They have moved the “carts to cart path” signs closer to the green to help speed up play. The pace of play was great on the front nine but slowed quite a bit on the back side.
The weekday, senior rate of $43 is excellent. They do have GPS on their carts but it sits in a strange position on the cart. Right in front of the passenger side. Never seen this type of location.
Get out and play Stonewolf this year. You will be amazed by the changes!
Great course, excellent shape
With how hot it has been I was really impressed with the course conditions, especially the greens. Great value, great course with unique holes. Highly recommend
Awsome
Great course, some difficult holes. Loved playing there. Will be back
Very nice course, one hiccup
Had a nice experience overall at Stonewolf. Great layout, great conditions. However there was one issue. Our GPS system stopped working on hole 11, which was frustrating since it was our first time playing the course and the scorecards do not have the course layout on them.
Strong course but not necessary the best value
First time playing there after a couple years and the course was in excellent shape. The people working in the clubhouse offered outstanding service. I will say while it is a very good course, the weekend rate is just slightly overpriced. I think you would get more bang for your buck on a weekday.
Conditions were strong. Tee boxes were well kept and the Zoysia fairways are starting to become green and your ball will sit up nicely. Rough was thick and lush. Many challenging tee shots on a set up that is decently wide but punished bad shots. Seems like the fairways narrow a lot as you get closer to the greens. I kind of forgot how much slope many of the putting surfaces have. If you hit the green in the wrong section, you will have a challenging initial putt and are staring at a three putt!
One big downer is that the course was jam packed. Our round took more than 5-1/2 hours. We had to wait on most shots as our round dragged. In general, a strong course that demands many accurate tee shots as well as approach shots.
Nicklaus does not disappoint.
Great course even better staff. The further back you play. The skinnier the fairway. They just aerated today and the grass are still brown.
Awful service
Clubhouse attendant was on phone with friends each time I went in there. She told me any cart was fine but then did not give me a key so I had to go back in. She said range was closed as they were saving balls for he next day. When I made the turn and ended my round there were multiple people on the range hitting balls. I will go to Far Oaks every time now over there.
