Bittersweet Golf Club
About
Bittersweet Golf Club in Gurnee, Ill. is ideally situated for a scenic round of golf. The diverse landscape flows seamlessly from lush wetlands to native prairies covered with colorful wildflowers. The layout also winds across a 100-year-old sage meadow and through forests of mature hardwoods, which serve as a home to an abundance of wildlife. Beyond the beautiful scenery, the terrain presents many challenges. The undulating fairways demand accuracy as you hit from multi-tiered tee boxes. Water also comes into play on almost every hole and there's an array of strategically placed bunkers you'll have to avoid. The eighth is the toughest hole on the front nine, a par-4 dogleg right with a lightning fast green. Bittersweet Golf Club's back nine is known for its scenery, which is best displayed on the signature par-5 11th hole, which offers not only a challenge but also a spectacular view from the tee.

Beautiful course!!!
Tough course so bring some extra balls. Course is in EXCELLENT condition.
Nice course layout & views.
Very slow round. Eventually had to jump two holes to get by a slow 4some to find the course open in front of them.
The course and especially the greens were in good shape. Nice tee box views of hole layout and preserved wetlands.
A hidden gem
Very quiet day..no one in front of us made for a perfect outing. Course was in very nice shape and in a beautiful setting of natural wetlands and some nice homes. Has a private course feel to it...especially the layout. Plenty of water and natural hazards to challenge anyone...especially from the tips. Very fast greens and some difficult pin placements for sure. All in all I look forward to playing here again. Got a great deal on GolfNow same day.
Course has excellent natural settings on every hole
From tee to green the holes were as pretty as it gets.
The green fees were one of the best values we have seen for the type of course with the water and tree lined fairways. Tee boxes were set up for all skill levels
to make it an enjoyable round. A must play.
Well maintained course somewhat challenging
Very nice course with well maintained fairways and greens. A lot of water, though...
Beautiful secret in the north burbs
I had been eyeing Bittersweet for a while as I frequently make the trip up north from Chicago to the bevy of great courses near the Wisconsin border. I had played over at Midlane the past few weeks and decided to try Bittersweet while Midlane aerates it's greens. I may never go back. I played at about 630 am on a Tuesday and from the first moment of seeing the gorgeous course in the fog, I knew I was in for a special experience. The pro shop staff was helpful and cordial and the course was in immaculate condition all around despite our recent heavy rain and heavy Labor Day traffic. Bunkers were really soft and clay lake after the soak and I was glad I didn't wind up in many. I've read a few reviews on here describing the course as overly punitive. This is definitely not the case on the front 9 and really though the back 9 is challenging it's certainly not unfair. You really need to think a shot ahead, place yourself in good positions, and in many cases leave the driver in the bag and play accurate target golf. I played driver twice I believe the whole day and was all the better for it. Water comes into play frequently, but often is not a challenge. There are some forced carries over marshland, but typically not too bad. Greens were receptive and presented a few undulations that were tricky to read at times but for the most part pure and true. The whole visual landscape of the course is a treat. Though it's routed through a development, the homes are nicely balanced by wetlands, gently rolling hills and beautiful trees and wildlife throughout the property. The clubhouse is small but well kept and functional with a nice patio and grill out back. I was in a time crunch and didn't get to use the range but it too looked well cared for. Groundscrew were attentive and kind to me as I passed through their early morning work. When I reached the clubhouse after my round to turn in my cart I thanked the pro shop staff and had a great conversation about how they are starting to get more folks up from the city. Given how ridiculously inexpensive this course is at $30 including cart with all it presents to the golfer, I can't believe more folks don't make the easy drive up. Amazing experience, beautiful setting, terrific value. Take advantage of it.
serious golfer
Outstanding.Great course.Great value.Bring A game.
Good pace of play. Twosome under 3 hours...morning tee time.
I will play it again....
This course will test your game to the max.
This course is a position course. If you put your tee shot into the right position, you have the ability to score well on the course. Lots of water on the sides of almost every hole. Tall grass off of some tees require a higher tee shot. Most water hazards may have tall grass at the edges of the hazard. I played mid-morning and the greens ran at least at10 to 11.
Pleasant Day
I was paired up and all was fine. the course presents a challenge and I enjoyed my round
The Bittersweet Experience
Bittersweet is a course that punishes poor shots so do not expect to come out and scrape it around with a balky game and still shoot below your handicap. There isn't a single hole that cannot be turned into a big number with a few careless shots. While it may sound like it is torture to play it, if you value having to perform well to post a good number, this is the perfect place. On the front nine, do not hit the ball left of your target or you will be in a hazard or OB. The back nine holes have trouble on both sides, but at least approaches to the greens are slightly more foregiving. The greens are true, and would be in better shape if people would just fix their ball marks.
what a course
Phonomenally challenging course.
Loved it, so much fun
GN10
Difficult course lots of water and wetlands. Greens were nice and well kept
Tough track
Course is in great shape. It's a tough track that plays more difficult when you tee off before the range opens. Tee'd off 6:15am and was unable to warm up due to range opening at 8am.
need ranger
Too many courses, including this one, do not have a ranger(s) on course to keep up pace of play. Too many times we are caught behind players who are a hole or more behind the players ahead of them. But the course is nice and challenging from tips.....good value.
Awesome
Beautiful and difficult. Perfect mix. Would definitely play again.
Different course
I played Bittersweet when it first opened and have seen it change from a completely unfair course to what it is now.....challenging but very fair.
Same 'ole Bittersweet
Played this course dozens of times and it is still the same. Course eats golf balls if you're even remotely wild off the tee and number 8 still owns me. Greens roll really well for the amount of play, but the pace is a bit slow.
Challenging but Fun
Great course with high level of difficulty. Well kept grounds with water hazards abound. Had a lot of fun playing at Bittersweet and definitely recommend it.
Bad 9 / Good 9
Front 9 is not fun... you can maybe use a driver 2 times safely... the other times you can pick between missing in a hazard or homes that are right off the fairway. There are signs every where reminding golfers they are responsible for things they hit - not really what I want to be reminded of when golfing. Looks to me like home owners love to go after golfers for bad shots. Back 9 is much better and feels more open.
every hole was a challenge
course a little dry until the monsoon hit, deffinately play again, alittle short from the blue tees, black seems more playable to above average golfer. received rain check from club pro and extremly friendly. look forward to playing again
