Overpriced unless using a hot deal
not going to pay $60+ with cart to play Winnetka. I Grew up two blocks from this course and I wouldn't pay more than $35 with cart to play these days. Just much better options in the area(glencoe/sportsmans). The course is standard, no beverage cart, and kept only decent. Pace of play is great because there is nobody on the course mostly due to price. The clubhouse dining/bar area has been redone and now offers some very good options from a local restaurant called Avli as well as a handful of beers on tap. Greens fees should be 30-40 with a cart to play here and anything above that is just an egregious mark up for being in Winnetka I suppose.
Good place to pay a casual round
I like older courses like this one. They have the raised greens which adds some challenge I would definitely play here again the location is convenient to the City and the Northern Suburbs.
Needs some attention before I'll come back...
Course use to be in much better shape. The flood earlier this summer did a lot of damage to the fairways and rough (obviously not the course’s fault). There are a lot of weeds and the rough is v. inconsistent. I believe there was some renovation a few years ago but now it looks like it never happened. Far, Far too many trees – many have no strategic value or are not necessary to protect golfers from errant shots. At least two bunkers have a tree right in front of them (#5, #8 and I think #15). That creates a double penalty and it should be obvious to the greens keeper and the course pro to correct it. Some areas within the course are so overgrown they might as well be water or OB because you’ll never find the ball. The course is too narrow for this and its bad for air flow and growing quality turf – slows play as well with people looking for balls.
It’s disappointing. My friends typically play here several times a year and after last week we have taken it out of our rotation. I hope things improve. Until then we will stay away.
Oh, one more thing. On the 13th hole (par 3) we were told by the starter v. directly to speed up. The group in front of us was on the 14th tee and the group behind us was a still on 12 tee (par 4). We didn’t argue but it made no sense. We finished in 4hrs with that last group still a hole behind us.
Great course gone downhill
Very shocked to see what has become of a terrific course. I have played this course many times over the past 35 years. Always in top condition. This year there were weeds everywhere. The rough hasn't been cut in a very long time. Trees needing to be trimmed. Clearly there are management issues at this once fine course. I do not recommend this course until things get corrected.
Fun course, Terrible staff
Staff were all over us for every little thing. There was definitely some kind of age discrimination going on. As college kids in our twenties I've never had a ranger basically follow us around the whole course making sure we weren't doing anything wrong. They checked our cooler and then wouldn't give us ice for our water bottles and sandwhiches inside the cooler, said sorry and just walked away . Come on seriously..? We came and treated your course with respect, we'd appreciate the same in return.
Average but Tight Muni
Mediocre. Conditions a little rough, hit it straight or pay the price not my favorite but pace was good and convenient location on day of play
Keep it on the short grass
Overall good experience. Rough was filled with dandelions making it hard to find an errant ball. Sand traps needed maintenance. Fairways and greens were in great shape.
A Little Ragged
Course is in marginal shape. While the greens & fairways were OK, the rough was out of hand with weeds and overgrowth, numerous bunkers were in need of rehab, etc.
Fall gold
Course is in fantastic shape and a great deal for the money. I highly recommend the scores. Great course if you like to walk.
Wasn't able to play...
First time I've ever made a tee time, shown up for the tee time and basically had the course tell me that they couldn't honor it. I had the first tee time of the day, and the course canceled my tee time since they were under a frost delay. They told me that they'd be able to get me out to play but couldn't guarantee when, since everyone that had a tee time prior to the frost delay would be considered "stand-by". I waited at the course for about 90 minutes (had a 7:08am tee time and left the course at 8:45am), as they still had no ability to tell me when I'd be able to play, and I got to watch about 12 other groups tee off right in front of me. With so many other options to play in Chicago-land, definitely never going to play this course again.
Winnetka
Haven't played this course in 7 years.
Winnetka is a really nice course but needs some repair work due to flooding.
Ground like ski moguls
It's a shame bc this place is so close to the city. It just really feels like they're letting this course go. I'm not exaggerating that when you ride in a cart it feels like ski moguls. Fairways are patch and it seems like there is some serious decay, water smells foul and there are flies all over the course. The layout could be great but it's not, there are small patches of water everywhere and it doesn't really make sense. Won't ever be coming back unless this course is redone.
Play in dry conditions - opt out of cart
I played this Winnetka Golf Club for the first time on a weekday afternoon in pretty sunny conditions at around 80F. The tee time through GN included a cart, which is convenient, however, opt out - don't get one or trade it for a push cart if you don't want to carry your clubs.
The course is build on old swamp land. You will notice this - so I was told - in wet conditions after heavy rain. The course does not drain very well and the management installed pumps. Unfortunately the houses around the course drain their water in the ponds on the course, I was told.
In dry conditions this is giving you whiplash on the fairways when riding the cart. There are bumps and ground waves all over. These will collect water and when it dries you will see a lot of brown, burnt grass.
It has not effected my game.
You'll find large greens - all of them where sand injected in the morning before I played. Not fun, but I am happy to see the course is taking maintenance serious. On 12-14 holes, you'll encounter very manageable water hazards. As a beginner, hit from the white tees.
Fun course during the week in dry conditions. Wide and open fairways with a little water and tree lined.
Top public course in north shore
I played here at 7:00 am with a friend. Course was VERY soft. Struggled a lot because a. My friend wanted to play from the tips, and b. I don't like soft conditions. The tips are extremely hard! Unless you're under a 10 handicap, don't play them. The course looked okay in April. Wasn't what I expected. I am going to play Tommorow and I took a peek at the first hole from the the 9th hole at the par 3. It looks AMAZING!!! It's a traditional course with a hint of links in the traps. Greens are pretty easy. Don't be surprised if you have a lot of 1 putts. There is a LOT of water. Keep it straight as water is in play on 16 of the 18 holes which includes every hole after 3. Bring a lot of balls. They got some very hard holes. 18 is a make or break hole. If your going to play this course, play it in July or August. I didn't get an accurate result on pace of play because there was nobody there and my friend was so slow. We played it in 4:30 and he had a push cart. I'm a fast player so it was annoying. Twilight rates are great! Overall, this is one of the best public courses in the summer months.
Bumpy Terrain
Course is fair but I do not recommend riding of a golf cart because the terrain is bumpy. Where ever you go you'll damage your kidney. Don't know why the course is so bumpy.

This course is way better than sportsmans. Similar in price and layout to Glencoe
