Fairway Hills Golf Club

With no rain in more than a month, I was pleased with the quality of the tees, fairways and greens. Although brown, there was grass in the fairways that avoided tight lies. I could sink my tee into the tees. The greens were green and reasonably-paced.

Too many people playing who are clueless about pace of play and a course MGMT who doesn't care once they take your money

I play this course about once each year as a Tee Off Deal and I live in Columbia. The course has some odd hole designs as it is squeezed in among various types of residences in Columbia. The course conditions were actually quite good despite some earlier reviews that suggested otherwise. The greens were generally excellent and rather fast; a few of the tee boxes were somewhat neglected but certainly playable; the fairways were brown but generally very playable; the bunkers appeared to be recently edged, very neat, all raked but with minimal sand layer. Scheduling management was an issue with some type of a morning high school player event with 6 hour plus rounds that led to a backlog of paying players with tee times in the afternoon. Started on hole #10 but behind a very slow foursome that led to slow pace of play for 9 holes (2:45 first nine) and then came around to hole #1 and found other new players starting a late 9 hole round placed in front of us. Darkness was closing in as finished the 18 hole round.

My son and I did sign up for the great deal being offered at 1 & figured we may have to wait a little bit but we only got in 8 holes in 3 hours just to let you know how bad the pace of play was. By 2:40, my son had to leave and I just didn’t have it in me to complete the rest of the our round with how slow it was.

Course was in decent shape. Staff was helpful and very cordial. Frontside was heavy target golf, backside was more traditional. Greens rolled really well; traps were light on sand so made bunkers tough to navigate. For a "community" style course you didn't feel the homes surrounding the fairways.
