Ellinwood Country Club

About
Ellinwood Country Club in Athol boasts a unique 18-hole layout with nine holes designed by Donald Ross and another nine designed by Geoffrey Cornish. Having two different designers gives the golf course plenty of variety, especially since the holes are intermingles. Cornish's greens are bigger and flatter while the Ross holes feature some of his characteristic greens and bunkers. Water hazards come into play as well and you'll face a few tricky doglegs and blind shots. There are some challenging holes but overall it's not an overly difficult golf course. The average player can still approach it with confidence. With a secluded location in rural western Massachusetts, Ellinwood Country Club offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The 11th hole, with a winding brook that runs alongside the fairway before cutting in front of the green, is particularly scenic.

Played today for the second time....
great value w/cart ...(16.00/ea)
excellent layout.... has it all... doglegs, elevation changes, tiny greens, undulation.
tee boxes and most greens in super shape ( not bad for this late in the season ( with not alot of rain), couple greens had been repaired so the where different shades of green, but all rolled fast and true.
Fairways where a little burnt out in spots but overall very good.
the closing 3 holes are terrific New England golf at its best.... save some energy ... its 5 - 4 - 5 to close.....
This course is an hour drive for me...... and worth it and then some, so enjoy ..... just dont tell to many .... lets keep it a secret lol
Very pleasant surprise
This course has several great golf holes. Challenging but very rewarding if you hit it straight and know your yardages. Fantastic greens. Some bare spots in fairways and ledge outcrops but plenty of good lies. 1st and 2nd cuts around green excellent. Throat into green excellent also. Generous landing area's and you will not be penalized for just missing green like many courses in this price range. All bunkers raked perfectly. A few elevated greens, and a few blind shots. Staff VERY friendly. This was 1st visit, have gone a 2nd time and have booked 3rd tee time. Love the Ross / Cornish mix. Paving on cart paths need some attention so expect a bumpy ride. I'll happily take the bumps to be able to enjoy this course!
Ellinwood Review
Course is a good layout. Greens were just punched. People were very nice. Will go back and play again
Amazing course
I love this course first time on it but it will be far from the last.
Value for Money and Fast
We played this on 4th July, weather didnt co-operate but the round was fun Greens in excellent condition and we were unimpeded so got round under 3 hours. Makes the most of the space available with a mix of shots needed. getting this on Golfnow at the price we were gven made this the best value golf round of the year. Will return and hopefully weather gives us a break next time.
Classic Donald Ross experience
Ellinwood is a devious course consistent with Ross' vision of a challenging day of golf. Accurate club selection and ball placement aids in overcoming the tricky terrain. Frequent difficult pin placements make for an interesting four hours. Absolutely glorious in the Fall!
must play more than once
considering the condition of area courses from the harsh winter the greens are the best I have played on
fall golf
huge beautiful greens, cool quirky slopes on greens, really a favorite
Great course
I golf here allot with my son and we enjoy it , the only complaint I have is that some of the cart paths are rather rough..As for the course it kept up well some narrow fairways and greens are in excellent condition..
You can't be the price during the week..
Very nice course for the money
There are certainly nicer courses around the area, but very few are the bargain that Ellinwood is. The course still has many "Donald Ross" elements, the greens are in pretty good shape, and the layout is interesting. The fairways are in tough shape and whether on the cart paths or on the fairways be ready for a bone rattling ride!
Challenging Course - Would play again
A real challenging course with some difficult approach shots. One thing though, yardage on score card and on hole markers appear to be well shorter than the actual. This was on most of the holes. For example, one hole listed as a 150 yard par 3, required a 3 wood to reach, even for long hitters.
But, if you want a challenging and fun experience, give this course a try.
greens are in great condition
first nine went very well---not crowded at all
back nine different-----seems many players start on the 10th hole
took longer to play back nine
LT.
Beautiful day, course is in superb condition, foliage very colorful, but not quite at peak. I suggest you take a peak ahead where you can't see if your not a long hitter. I almost feel guilty for not having paid more . Couldn't have been better in my book.
Good course
This golf course friendly staff I feel like I own this course every time I play here.
Elinwood's gain Templewood's loss
Course has greens as good as most. Fairways are a bit bumpy but didn't have many poor lies. A real "Ross gem". Pace of play for mid-week was 3 hours for a twosome. Since getting superintendent back course is back in shape it was prior to his departure. Course who lost him must be feeling the effects. For the money and as an avid golfer from the area who can and has played most Massachusetts golf courses this is by far the best value you will get for your money. If you are in the area looking for a fun, challenging course that won't hurt your wallet Elinwood is the place to play
Excellent walking course or cart
Great shape, very active maintenance staff, relaxed environment.
Tiered greens
Hilly lot of tiered greens wide open fairways. a little bit of water greens surrounded by bunkers
Plays longer and harder than its rating/slope.
Ellinwood has the features of an older course...up and over slopes and hills, ,blind shots, etc. You will hit every club in your bag. It is a very fair test of your overall game.
Classic Donald Ross country gem
A fair amount of blind shots. Small greens demand a good shot into hole. Above the hole is dead, so be under it and score better. Great staff, uncrowded fairways. Well worth the drive.
this course is playable and enjoyable
nice course great shape a thinking course not ho hum. must play more than once. I'll go again. 19th hole was very enjoyable good selection and priced affordably.
