Needs attention
Before I state the obvious of the issues with this course I’ll say that we had a blast. This was my finance first time on the course and had only been to the range. She had so much fun and has brought it up for the last 4 days. To be fair this course glaringly has budget issues. The original #1 9 holes has tee boxes with no grass, turf missing on majority of greens in the 15-30 percent range, dips in multiple areas on greens as if my dog was trying to dig holes, fabric exposed in many bunkers, among other issues. The #2 course back nine was in much better shape but still needs some TLC. That being said it’s a great course for beginner level players who don’t care. The layout is fun and we will def play here again. The staff is so nice and appeared they were all more than happy to be at work. Even under the busy conditions of tee times galore. The range is small but more than sufficient to warm up on. Like I said before it has its pros and cons but the pros make this place worth a visit. Just don’t expect great playing surfaces.
A noticeable work in progress.
I played a round of golf on course 1 at Ponkapoag and I was impressed with the noticeable improvements . I thought the fairways were in decent condition. I was able to get some good shots off. There have been noticeable tree and tall grass trimming all around the course The greens were hit and mis, some good and some bad. And the tee boxes still need work. That being said for what I paid (hot deal) it was well worth it. The new golf carts are now all electric and fun to drive as well. I will be back, and I have to recommend this place to any cost conscientious golfer.
Great Layout; Poor conditions
Ponkapog is what George Wright was when I was growing up; an unkept jewel. The layout of the course is excellent with a great variety of holes with challenges for every golfer.
With few exceptions the greens were the worst I've ever played on, the fairways played more like the first cut of rough and the tee boxes looked like they had been just strafed by fighter planes.
If you want a place to practice your game from tee through the end of the fairway, you can't beat the price but you can't include putting as part of your practice day.
Awful
Have played this course in the past but never thought it would be as bad as this day ! Shocked that this Municipal course has been let go as bad as this. The only good thing was the newer carts that they had available. Course#2 is in horrendous shape and we were disappointed that it’s come under such disrepair. Thought we could get some swings in to start the season but the rough and the greens are so bad it’s hard to know how good or bad we did😏 We were better chipping on the green rather than putting because the surface was so spotty with sand and dirt.
Hard no to recommending this course!!
Poor green and tee box
Great for the value. Greens and tee boxes were in rough shape but the season just started so who knows.
Not great
Greens were really in bad shape. Sand bunkers everywhere on the greens
Government is the problem
This course is an example of what you get when government takes things over... Complete ineptitude and utter denigration. This place has lost all respect for itself. They have completely given up. It's time for us to give up as well.
You could pay me to play Here again.
Greens 4 out of 10 / Tee to Green 8 out of 10
Great Layout,
making this a CHALLENGING (not easy) overall course.
The CATCH is:
the “Greens” are neglected, not kept up and in terrible condition…
which is a SHAME, because the “COURSE” is challenging
(tee to green).
This poses as a course with “Great-Possibility” if only
someone there can put additional resources into “caring” for the greens condition…
(put more resources on “THE GREENS…)
(don’t expect to work on your “putting-game” here)
Great “value” though
I’ll be back!
Only nine holes
I paid for a round of golf 18 holes with a cart, and was told that I could only use the card for nine holes because my tee time at 12:30 PM, and you can only use the cart For 18 holes if you book your tee time before 11 AM.. I would like to have a refund for this round of golf. Thanks.
Course is improving. Playing hard and fast in November.
I made a hole in one on Course 2 -hole 11.
So loved the course!!
The course has potential
I've played here in the past back in 2005 & 2006 for high school golf against Blue Hills vocational tech school. I hadn't been here for years and wanted to play it. Originally they had renovated & restored all the holes back in 2014 or 2015. Im not sure what the conditions of the course is like in May, June. July, August. & Early to mid September. But when I played on October 21, 2024, it looks like the course is just not maintained all that well. The golf carts are old. Ponkapoag has massive potential to be such a beautiful golf course. I mean Canton itself is a nice town. Problem is as of right now the state owns the course & DCR does the maintenance for the golf course. That place needs brand new ownership. If I had the money, I would buy that golf course. Definitely a brand new maintenance team, newer maintenance equipment, have up to date golf carts, I would remodel the whole main building. I can just vision what Ponkapoag should really look like.
Lower your expectations.
People were great, the course was rough. Kind of like playing in a buddy’s back yard. Limitless potential with the layout so hopefully they can do some good things to improve it. Expect 5+ hour rounds
A joke?
There is no fairways only rough. The “greens” are fairways at most bad courses.
Fun if you’re drinking
Cheap course that we booked last minute, it was in such AWFUL condition that it was actually laughable and fun. I’ll definitely never forget that round and course condition
