Golfer Reviews
They’re trying… but they need some cash and help
Great potential. And you can tell the crew is working hard. But most greens were in awful shape. Many greens with multiple sand traps (at least that’s what they looked like).
I’m hoping the state invests a little more into bringing this back to glory. It really does have great potential.
Good value if you’re looking to get some practice in.
Don’t pay to play here
It is disrespectful to golfers that they charge money to play here. They should’ve paid me. Absolute joke.
Ponkapoag Golf Course
I played course #2 at Ponkapoag on 7/2 with my husband. We were able to start earlier than our tee time which was nice but it took a bit to actually find the first hole, there was no starter to ask, some of the holes were not marked and we had trouble finding the next hole. Thank god for friendly golfers! The course itself was good, the greens okay. When we started on 10 it seems like people were just jumping in and we felt rushed. I would definitely play here again now that I have an idea of the layout.
Ponkpoag golf course 1
Course conditions are not good particularly the quality of greens. But the price is great and course layout is good for a beginner. Overall I love the course and will play there more often.
Great for beginner even the course conditions are not that great.
I like the difficulties of the course. And each hole has its own challenges. I love to play there more often
Basically a backyard
Probably the worst-maintained course I’ve ever been on. Not only were some of the greens beat up and dried up to the point of looking like dried/hardened dirt, but then with other greens you literally couldn’t tell when the green started and ended. It was like someone had made the holes in their backyard and doesn’t maintain it or uses a regular lawn mower to cut the grass slightly shorter than the rest. I get that this location is super affordable, but didn’t expect it to be THAT bad.
*This was while playing the back nine of course 2
Horrible maintenance
Love the look of the course layouts, if you squint. On closer inspection, fairways were like rough, most of the greens were in terrible shapem some unplayable, despite all the rain this spring This place needs a bigger budget, some professional groundspeople. Privatize! The state should not be in the business of running golf courses. It's a disgrace to the Donald Ross name.
Waste of a great track
I honestly can't believe MA 5hid boujee state would allow a state run course to look like THIS!!!! A VERY LONG TIME AGO I've been told by locals a us open was considered here. If they took care of this course just a Little bit it would be a great track. Everything is horrible!! Please someone buy it get someone in office who likes golf and will show some attention to it. Otherwise shut it down and stop rubbing people of money. It should be free at this point.
Terrible
Poorly maintained. Grass overgrown in the fairways. Standing water in the holes on green. Too bad such beautiful surroundings. Will not play there again
So much potential
Lost the ball in the middle of the fairway due to high grass. Some greens the hole had water. Such beautiful surroundings but not maintained at all. Have played here before and always figured next time would be better. There will be no next time again. Save your money. Play somewhere else.
Meh
I only played 9 on course 2, the fairways were pretty long maybe 2 inches or more in length. Greens look decent from far but up close they are far from good. In fact, I'd say these have to be some of the worst greens in the country. They don't even try to maintain it. The green on hole 3 looked like mortar rounds hit it. Other greens were similar but not quite as bad but still holes everywhere, ball jumping everywhere on putts and diverting directions. For 12 bucks I'd play again but anything more is simply not worth. 12 is too much as is, it should be free to golf here until they can get their crap together if they ever do. The state needs to step up or shut the course down
Horrendous Condition
I grew up playing here, learned how to golf here so it’s tough to see it like that. But I have never in my life seen a course in worse condition then this one. Gravel pits on almost every green, legitimately ankle high grass on greens, and pins that haven’t been maintained let alone moved in probably months. One downhill par 4 had a flag in the middle of the fairway. Most tee boxes were neglected beyond repair to the point I teed up wherever I could find grass. Not a single trash can to be found leaving trash in the woods, cart path, etc.
This course and the condition they keep it in is a disgrace. It should be considered a hate crime charging to play here. Every person we interacted with could not have been more rude, dismissive and non welcoming for a course literally hanging on by a thread.
Awful experience, shameful conditions, and staff that appeared to be annoyed golfers were there to golf could not motivate me less to come back.
Worst Greens I’ve ever seen
This course is in a great location. That’s about the only good thing that can be said. The conditions of the course are terrible. The greens are worst than most courses fairways. Whole number 3’s green on course #2 look like you are playing in a bunker.
