A typical green on the back nine (Sep 2022) Photo submitted by u314160008154 on 10/01/2022
Do not bother
Even at the extremely friendly price, do not bother. This course is in the worst condition of any course I have played in the last 10 years. Maybe equal to the worst ever. I am including NYC muni courses! Owned by the state, no money has been spent on this. A few greens without substantial grass. Fairways that are shrines to crabgrass - but nothing radical as rye or fescue. A shame because the layout is very interesting. It could be turned into a gem.
You get what you pay for
Cheap municipal course that’s in pretty rough shape. I didn’t mind the rough fairways because we would just give ourselves a good lie, but we were often putting through sand. The greens need a lot of work. But staff was accommodating. Our tee time was later than they usually let carts out, but they were nice enough to let us take the carts out anyways. As long as you keep your expectations low this is a decent course for getting last minute tee times around Boston.
Greens and fairways in sorry shape
Leo Martín is one of two state-run golf courses near Boston, the other being Ponkapoag in Canton. Both are relatively inexpensive and both are in terrible shape. The front nine holes at Leo Martin are not in great shape but still acceptable, The problems start with hole 10. A combination of persistent droughts, disease/ infestation and insufficient maintenance has almost ruined the greens, turning them into a patchwork of grass, sand and dirt. Similarly, the fairways are barren in many places, causing erratic bounces and making it nearly impossible to make a clean contact with the iron. The upside: LM usually has availability when other courses in the area are booked out, the staff are friendly and the prices unbeatable. Bottom line: Come here if you don’t mind poor conditions, and if you prefer a suboptimal nine or eighteen holes for the same price as two buckets at a driving range elsewhere.
Don't waste your money
Don't waste your money, The fairways have no grass on them and greens are covered in dead crab grass. With a little love it'd be a fun layout to play on.
Golf Course?
The staff were friendly which was appreciated. The course was completely dead—from tee boxes to greens grass was a premium. There was not a single true green to be found. All the greens were a combination of dead, punched, crab grass, and dirt. The “cafe” was closed & there was no water on the course.
Maybe earlier in the season it’s better. Can’t complain for $45 but it was truly bad so do with that what you wish.
Never playing here again
Has to be the worst golf course in New England if not all of the US. Little to no grass on the fairways and the greens were even worse. Place needs to be shut down.
Use your backyard
I can guarantee everyone reading this has a yard that is in as good of (if not better) conditions than Leo J. I honestly think they haven’t ever tried to water the grass or do anything to improve the conditions. Most fairways only have 25% grass so just get used to hitting off of dirt. The fairways are terrible but the greens is the worst part. They are going to be the slowest greens you’ve ever played, my friends and I play there a good amount over the years (the price is great) and we usually don’t even bother putting. Your speed will be totally off if you get used to these greens then play a normal course. I will say that this course is fairly priced (unlike newton comm which costs an arm and a leg for an awful course) and the layout is great. If they could improve the conditions it would be a great course. If you just want to get a quick tee time after work and screw around with your friends and have a good time for cheap, this is the place….. 30x better than newton comm
Great D. Ross layout ruined by DCR but not as bad as Ponkapoag
The people working here for any length of time are tired and fairly apathetic about how terrible the course conditions are here at the East Coast's greatest Dog Track. What you can expect are low, broadleaf and gnarly weeds that formulate about 96% of the fairways and tee boxes, and what grass is there is what we call "old grass". This course needs to be ripped up and reseeded, but that will never happen. In short, the history of the course explains how it will never flourish, and that is because DCR hires people that embezzle tens of thousands of dollars intended for course improvements, then does nothing to rectify the situation still many years later. This place makes me want to cry when I play it, because 100% of golfers agree that the layout is super fun and still shows some of the natural contours Donald Ross helped find and shape into the course. Expect nothing but a 70's shag carpet on the greens where the grass is actually growing. This place might have a shot if it weren't run by such half-wits that do things like use a chemical on all the greens at once improperly that burnt them all to a crisp a couple years ago. Please, someone in MA government save these public courses: we have scant little and few overpriced, crappy courses to choose from in MA for public golf, where there are more private courses than any other concentration in the US. This is just a shining example of what could be great if one of the donkeys in charge would just give a darn instead of bragging about the private courses they play instead of those under their care. Enjoy your round!!!
You pay for what you get
I booked a round for $8.99 with a coupon, and it was certainly only worth that price. This course has taken a beating from the heat, luckily the greens are green. The greens play horrifically slow so if you're used to fast greens show up early to practice putting. Overall for what I paid I was happy with the result.
Leo J
I am a fan of the layout of this course. Hard to walk given the distance between some of the holes, but you have to use your full bag. 570, 540 yard 5's....250,190 par 3's.... a decent amount of dog legs, so you have to strategize.... If they put in a legitimate sprinkler system to keep the grass up, it could be a great course.
Go home
This course is just a disgrace and the worst part is that the state runs it
