Par 3 third hole. Hard to see elevation change, but it’s pretty significant. I think this is the “signature hole,” because it’s the one featured on the website. Photo submitted by jt20sb22 on 07/20/2024

Fun course to play
Mostly in good shape. Several sand traps overgrown with weeds and some of the greens were in rough shape. No food or beverages available for purchase. The ladies tee boxes need some help!
It’s inexpensive
Greens are in rough shape, but it’s pretty cheap and you can usually get on here when everyone else is busy. Okay course for casual golfers and families.
Fun course
Not a bad course like people make it out to be. Yes a couple greens are in rough condition and a few bunkers, but they do their best for their golfers to make it playable. Overall a decent fun course.
Could be so much better!
Great layout and amazingly Friendly staff are the positives. I certainly wouldn’t pay full price with the current course conditions. Some of the greens are in very bad shape with disease. Trees are very over grown and rough is longer than the us open. No beverage cart on a Saturday and half way house was closed. Curlys restaurant was also closed. No where for our large group to eat. Course lost a lot of money by not having any food or drinks other than the clubhouse. Clubhouse you only see on the 1st and last home! Needs some TLC.
Always enjoyable and picturesque
The fairways and greens have improved over the recent years. A wind storm came through the day we played and the outdoor services did the best they could for a quick cleanup. My cousin from Chicago and my brother try and play this course every or every other year and always find it a challenge yet rewarding/enjoyable course to play in late Summer.
I would only recommend this course if you get it for a discount. The greens were not well cared for and the course was not well groomed overall. The staff was friendly and we only saw 1 other twosome out on the course.
Pleasantly Surprised
Played in mid-July 2024. Was not expecting much based on the reviews, but left pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the course. I did not play the Norway course, but it looked to be in similar shape/condition as the Spruce.
Greens and fairways are in really good shape, and it’s a fun layout - lots of holes go thru the forest. It doesn’t have a ton of elevation change, but has enough. Definitely has a “northern michigan” feel in terms of how it plays. Greens have lots of slope from back to front. They weren’t fast, but they weren’t slow either.
I saw some complaints about the rough and bunkers. The rough is a little long - but nothing outrageous. If anything it’s more consistent than shorter rough. Some bunkers are in bad shape - and either need to be restored, or filled in. Others were fine. I assume there’s some drainage issues with the bunkers. The worker at the pro shop admitted the bunkers were in need of work, but didn’t know if there was a solution.
Staff was great! Price is very reasonable considering where it’s located, and it was July. Pro shop is very clean and new. They also had the halfway house open - good burgers and reasonably priced. Pace of play was a little slow on the back 9.
As mentioned above, I did not stay at the resort, so can’t speak about rooms or anything, but wanted to leave a good review for the course because I think it deserves that.
Do you want to talk about thick rough? Oh my goodness.
Yeah, I played this course back in 1997 Good wanted to get back up to it try it again I did not remember much about it but I know the course was built in the 50s and had a lot of elevation in the layout was really pretty nice. The fairways were OK and the greens were pretty good, but I’ll tell you what the ROUGH was about a foot deep in a lot of spots was a hayfield you could not find your ball. If you didn’t keep it in the fairway it’s almost like they were out of mowers or something I don’t know. Wife said it was a one and done will never play it again just seems like they just don’t have the money to upkeep the course. I don’t know what to deal with anyway no I really could not recommend playing this old course. It’s just too bad because the layout is nice characters. Good it’s just , me and the sand traps are just pitiful. Awful between that and the rough no sorry.
We played the SPRUCE.
It was still fun with the wife
I guess I’d try it once but Eldorado is the best in Cadillac and Lakewood is nice too
Grass need cutting
The grass in the rough hadn't been mowed in awhile - nor the fairways. A lot of rain in the area might have delayed the mowing. With heavy winds the night before and during the round, the greens were littered with debree from the trees. Also needed mowing. The course is a fair course layout but need some maintenance and I'm sure with better weather, it will be "playable" again
Solid Local Course
I played this course in fall. Being a local I noticed that the course is being maintained much better than years previous. The only glaring flaw was that the bunkers are not well kept. Fall prices were amazing but it looks like their summer rates are a bit high. Giving a full five stars due to the friendliness of the staff and the value.
Solid course.
Have played here for years. Course is notably better shape this season.
Would not consider this “up north” golf
If you’re looking for “up north” golf, go elsewhere. Not much to this course layout.
I went in mid May and the course was not in good shape. I give them the benefit of the doubt because it’s early in their season, but the prices should be reduced accordingly.
Below are an example of conditions of the rough and tee boxes throughout the course. Dandelions, uncut rough, and leaves from last season made it nearly impossible to find your ball unless it was in the fairway.
Be mindful that booking an early tee time could mean you are delayed because of frost. My 0700 tee time was incrementally pushed back 2 hours due to “below freezing temperatures”, although it was as warm as 53 degrees and I was still told to wait.
With that said, the pace of play was great. 0900 on a weekday, i didn’t see a body the entire round. Maybe there’s a reason for that.
