Lake Doster Golf Club
About
Lake Doster Golf Club in Plainwell is ranked as one of the top 25 golf courses in Michigan. The layout has undulating greens and watered fairways that will test even the most experienced golfers. The course is home to the affectionately nicknamed "Little Monster," its third hole, which boasts a reputation as the toughest par 3 in the state. This infamous hole features a tee that sits high above a treacherous green that is surrounded on three sides by water and even further protected with three sand traps. The hole is also completely isolated thanks to the surrounding mature trees. There is another par 3 on the golf course that is almost as equally tough, the 15th. There is a pond to the right that is seemingly out of play but it's still intimidating enough to push you too far left, risking a landing in the sand trap.

tough but fair
this course throws about everything at you its very challenging lots of elevation changes greens are very sloped really good practice for your game one of the best designed golf courses in Southwest Michigan has stood the test of time
Not a friendly course
round was going good except the greens had a lot of dead spots. Then caught a group of unfriendly women members that said they don't have to let anybody pass cause they are playing a tourney and they are members( stroke play not scramble style tourney). We then talked to the pro shop manager who pretty much didn't say anything and backed the women members up. DEFINITELY not going back since there are soo many better courses close
Good round of golf
Really enjoyed playing Lake Doster. Greens could have been in a little better shape.
Gourgeous golf course and tough as nails.
If your not a 2 or 3 handicap you should play the front tees.
9 beautiful holes followed by 9 very average holes
The first nine holes on the course are great, and the little monster really is a fun little hole. The second nine is very average with lots of homes on it, it also is not in as good of shape as the front. Overall a fine course for the price.!
The couse was angry we booked through GolfNow......duh...
We arrived after a rain. There were 6 cars in the parking lot. We asked if we could start earlier than our tee time and were told, "No, we totally dislike GolfNow and you have to wait until your time." That would have made sense if they were full, but we stood around looking at each other waiting until our time. Really dumb of the course personnel. No one was there. We left with a very bitter taste of how customer service has gone SO BAD. Yes, those were the rules....but dumb, just dumb. No, I will not return there and will not recommend. Not your fault GolfNow....the fault of course personnel that could care less about making the customer's experience good.
Always enjoy playing this course. Great layout that doesn't make you feel like you're just playing the same hole over & over (lots of hole variety).
Wife & I played on a Fri afternoon and had an enjoyable time. It rained in the morning, so some soggy areas on the course. Greens were slower than normal due to the rain, but very receptive to shots. Sparse grass on tee boxes would be my only complaint about this course.
development course but interesting
There are some interesting & fun holes on this hidden gem. A little off the beaten path but for the $$$ a great deal. Course was in OK shape. The " Tiny Monster " hole is fun. You'll probably hit more than one ball. It's a pretty scenic course for being in a development.
The course layout is very inspired greens are very difficult to putt
Pin placements were the most difficult places on fast and rolling greens. Greens are difficult to read. Downhill slopes are not always downhill. The difficult pin placements must have contributed to slower play.
Tee boxes were very worn and chewed up with weeds and crabgrass.
Driving range had three target greens. The practice tee was in better shape than most of the tees on the course. Distances to the target greens or areas of the practice range were not marked.
Pro shop staff was very friendly and accommodating.
tough track - will test your skills
This is not a course for beginners. It is carved out of a hilly wooded area and it is one of the toughest tracks I have played. If you want a challenging course then is one is for you. The tee boxes were not watered and extremely difficult to get a tee into the ground. The greens when we played were fast, but also a bit bumpy, there were several people who played before us that did not bother to fix their pitch marks. There are not very many level lies on several holes especially if you are not playing from the short grass. I am a 15 handicap and I struggled to keep it under 100. You will use every club in your bag at least twice during the course of play on this monster.
Nice course to play for all skill levels, lacking customer service
Nice course to play for all skill levels, lacking customer service
The course was well maintained.
One downfall was the tee time we purchased was set aside for a golf outing when we got to the course. We only ended up playing 8 holes because it was getting dark. Play was very slow because of the outing.
course was in good shape. but flustrating slow play
course is challenging and in good shape. Unfortunately we were stuck behind a outing that was taking 1/2 hour to play a hole --- we quit after 15 holes
The course was in good shape and play moved reasonably well for a Saturday afternoon with perfect August weather for golf.
My wife and I always enjoy playing the course at Lake Doster. It is challenging but manageable and the setting is quite pleasurable. It is certainly not the most difficult course in Southwest Michigan but it is well maintained and makes for a great round of relaxing and enjoyable golf.
Disappointment at wasted potential
No ranger. Every group in front and behind me for the first 7 holes were hitting more than me ball per golfer. Beautiful layout and excellent use of the natural terrain. However, tees, fairways and especially the greens are in need of serious attention. I had a least 10 putts redirected by spike and ball marks. The most unique putting situation was having to through yesterday's cup (it was 1/2" below flush and and 2 feet from today's cup....
Have never played this course before and will not again. I don't know the history of it but a little bit of rangering, pairing up singles at pro shop/ first tee and of course attention to the tees and greens would induce me to return....I fully understand that the industry as a whole has been hit hard by a bad economy and an oversupply of courses, thus forcing lower greens fees to attract play, but Lake Doster could likely utilize its cash flow for better ROI, like training someone how to move cups.
Fantastic value
This course is better than most public courses. They always offer great deals online. I played there on a Thrusday at 1pm for $11 for 18 holes. You can't beat it. They are friendly and flexible. Always look forward to playing there.
Didn't Score Well, but good course.
This course took it's toll on me. After 18 holes of avoiding trees, reading greens, and navigating long holes, I relented to take my clubs and go home. If you are looking for an easy course, this is not for you. Otherwise, if you are up for a challenge, have at it! Also, I figured my cost was 15 cents a stroke which isn't bad. In addition, the course is hard to find because very few signs.
Course was challenging, but enjoyed.
Course was overbooked the day we were schuduled to play. But we were given a raincheck. Staff were great and understanding. Very friendly. Will play again.
