Lake Doster Golf Club
About
Lake Doster Golf Club in Plainwell is ranked as one of the top 25 golf courses in Michigan. The layout has undulating greens and watered fairways that will test even the most experienced golfers. The course is home to the affectionately nicknamed "Little Monster," its third hole, which boasts a reputation as the toughest par 3 in the state. This infamous hole features a tee that sits high above a treacherous green that is surrounded on three sides by water and even further protected with three sand traps. The hole is also completely isolated thanks to the surrounding mature trees. There is another par 3 on the golf course that is almost as equally tough, the 15th. There is a pond to the right that is seemingly out of play but it's still intimidating enough to push you too far left, risking a landing in the sand trap.

Subtle approaches slower greens
Staff was very flexible. Course was in generally good shape except for occasional bare spots in just a couple of greens. Greens were slower than I expected which was exasperated when took the staff up on their offer to let us go off early. You definitely NEED TO MAKE FEW PRACTICE PUTS TO GET A FEEL FOR THEM BEFORE YOUR ROUND.
We also misjudged a few approach shot adjustments early on do to subtle elevation changes. This is a killer since several greens have very small buffers behind them before you are out of bounds...
Still this was an overall enjoyable round of golf.
Nice course at a good rate. Great layout. Challenging but opportunity to get out of trouble on most holes.
Fun course and a good challenge
Great staff and a fun course to play. A few of the tee boxes need some love and the cart path as well but overall a decent place to play for the price.

Good value, very friendly staff, had a good time despite the cold weather,
Not what I expected
I had heard good things but from someone who hadn't golfed there in over 10 yrs. Apparently a lot has changed in that time. Early season or not the course has clearly not been maintained, greens were horrible! I'd rather pay $5-$15 more for the GL East/ West or Stonehedge. Also didn't help getting paired up with 2 older guys that were rude (edited because I can't use bad language here). Constantly talking while trying to swing, even hit the gas on the cart during the boys backswing. I was extremely upset to say the least, luckily we were able to ditch them at the turn without having to cause a scene. Won't return!
Run away
Waited 1 hour after our tee time no carts to play. but saw two groups of six playing. The guy in the shop was talking to them so he knew.
Greens were horrible , played there before , not normal.
Stay away
pushy members
I've played Doster years ago and remembered it as a nice layout with a good clubhouse feel, friendly and helpful to non-members. Those two things are still true.
Unfortunately, we had trouble with member players showing up as singles or doubles behind our foursome, including immediately after we teed off at our appointed time, and then acting impatient as our foursome played at a 4-hour pace. NOT COOL. Eventually, they would give up and drive around, but it was not a good look or feel. I was entertaining guests, so I felt particularly responsible to provide my fellow golfers w a good experience.
The other local guy golfing with us said he had the exact same experience the two prior times he played Doster this season. Management needs to educate its members and/or have a starter and ranger on the course to control its rude members.
