North/South at Tanglewood - The Lion
About
Opened in 1991, the North and South Courses were Tanglewood's original championship 18-hole course before the West nine was added in 1995. All 27 holes are known as "The Lion." The North is the gentlest of the three nines and the South is a mix of trees and water while the West has water on almost every hole. The North/South course has a gently rolling terrain that doesn't offer dramatic elevation changes but it also makes a flat lie hard to find. The undulating landscape also gives a bowl-shape to most of the holes that enclose errant balls and bring them back into play. The South nine incorporates a variety of wetlands, offering a pond or marsh hovering around many of the greens. The club is consistently ranked as one of the best public golf courses in the metro Detroit area.

Fair test with no surprise trouble and well maintained greens.
Pleasant staff, well maintained course. Was pared up with 3 good players and ended up having an exceptional time. Even the beverage cart girl was fun and attentive.
Beautiful course with challenging rough
I played Tanglewood for the first time and really enjoyed the experience. The course is very scenic and well maintained--in general. It is in a golf community so there are homes around the home, but not many are right on top of the course. The starter controlled the groups well and we were not rushed at all. It was a very relaxing pace.
The greens had been aerated and were a bit bumpy, but still playable. It rained the night before we played and this left the course a little wet (standing water in sand traps, etc.). The rough was the main issue for me. It was long and it was TOUGH! I was in the rough more than I wanted to be and you pay the price for straying from the fairway.
The thing I liked most about the course are the gorgeous par 3 water holes. We played from the blues and some of the par 3 holes require long carries over the water, but they are pretty spectacular.
I look forward to playing here again.
Staff could have been more friendly
We played the same day as an outing. When we made the turn they had no idea what course we were playing on the back nine. We had to wait over 20 minutes for them to give us an answer and when we asked the starter he was pretty rude about it. Once he figured it out he had us start on hole 3 and finish on hole two. This was kind of weird. Other than that the course was beautiful and was a nice challenge.
Typically a nice course. Not fun today
It took us 2:45 to complete the first nine and never saw a ranger on the course. Went to make the turn and were told we had to wait 45 min until an outing was finished. Asked if we could get a 9 hole voucher and was told no. Ended leaving anyway. Hey Tanglewood thanks for being so accommodating
Solid Playing Experience!! A must play...
Very impressed with this one...Great conditions. Variable challenges. You can definitely score here (78), but you need to leave your ego in the car (not your bag as you will be tempted to grab it on a few holes). Pace was a bit slow on a few holes due to an outing that was finishing in the early evening (back 9 nine). Front 9 pace balanced things out though. The 1 hr. drive home was much more enjoyable after the experience. Another lower Michigan jewel! Solid A grade! Will be added to the frequent play list.
Solid Course
Great conditions for a public course, especially the greens. Play a little slow at times, but to be expected on a Saturday. Please cut your rough shorter. We're not playing in a US Open. Very frustrating to have to take 5 minutes to look for a ball that is 5 yards off the fairway and/or a few yards off the green. Other than that, enjoyable experience and very nice course.
Great course, worth playing
South & West is the best combo. Green rolled true and fast, and the overall condition of the course was good. Best value to be had is with golfnow's hotdeals.
Well maintained course.
Tanglewood has 3 nines, I played the South and the West courses. They were both in excellent condition. The South is a little tougher than the West. Greens were pretty fast for a public course as they were in great condition.
Good not Great
Its a challenging course for the average golfer. The staff had two groups of 14+ people teeing off and they handled that very well, was still able to get in 18 holes in 4.5 hours. I would feel a lot more comfortable paying less then 50$ to play here because their just isn't enough to justify it.
Bottom Line: worth a shot, you wont be disappointing by any means.
Very nice course
Fun to play, fairly easy but some challenges.
was in nice shape and my wife and I played on a Sunday afternoon late and played around 3 hours. very friendly staff
Fantastic
Great sevice. There was an attendant to unload our clubs. The practice area incldes a bunker and chipping area. The fairways are beautifully maintained and the course length seemed somewhat short, with nice doglegs to offset. The greens are fantastic and somewhat fast, took a little getting used to, but half way through the round (north-south) we had it pretty well diled in. The cart girls are friendly and mostly hot to boot, and the food was good and drink prices fair. Highly recommended.
Great play for the Golfnow price
Great play for the Golfnow price. Slow play on the back but was expected being a hoilday. No rangers noted. Golfers need to repair their divots on the green.
Great local course! My first time. I will be back to play again!
Nice course! Will definitely be back to play 18. I scored an 88. Slow greens, but the rough is thick. Great time. Really hot day!
Played south & west courses.
First Nine was a good pace. On the 8th hole(west course) there was 5 groups waiting to tee off. No course Ranger to quicken the pace. Had to leave, otherwise the last 2 holes would have taken 50 minutes. Very disappointing. Good course, but should be run better. Will probably not return. Golfers need to play "ready golf" on the weekend and Tanglewood needs to let people know its not a private country club.
Excellent course with plenty of opportunity for new and experienced golfers
This is the first time I have played Tanglewood in 10 years only because I recently moved back into the area. I played the South to West 18 from the blue tees and found that the course had opportunities for both smart play and risk taking. The greens were smooth and ran faster than I was used to, however I enjoyed them once I learned the pace. The practice facilities were excellent. Grass tees for the range and they ball dispenser takes both cash and credit card. The putting green was large but ran slower than the actual greens. The chipping green was significantly slower and I would have liked to see it mown like the putting green so that I could see the run out of the ball.
Overall an excellent experience and I will be going again.
Very Good
Great Challenging Golf Course and pretty good food.
Pristine course worth the money!
Tanglewood has three nine hole courses. I played the West and North nines. This combination was very challenging. The course was in perfect shape, all the greens were very fast and required a good eye for subtle changes that made the ball move right or left.. I really enjoyed the challenge.
Course was in outstanding condition!!!
Golf course is outstanding, however, cart paths are in poor condition and literally jar you out of your seat.
Worth playing
Hot deal rates are well worth the money at any course in this area. The North 9 is the most boring of the 3 but all 3 are in good shape, no complaints about the greens. We got around in just under 5 hours which is to be expected for a noon tee time on a holiday weekend. If this course had a little better normal rates I would play here more often, in the last 2 years there has been a pretty significant increase.
