The course is in very good condition for this time of year. The only negative was there were many dead leaves on the fairways which made it hard to find your ball.
Don't Judge the Course by the Clubhouse
Whispering Pines Golf Course presents an unassuming appearance upon arrival at the parking lot. The clubhouse is small and not very well stocked. A small bar and grill provides a limited menu. The golf is a totally different story- a full menu of interesting and challenging holes. The front nine is fairly wide open, with few trees and broad fairways. There are some gentle elevations changes, but nothing too dramatic. Right and left dogleg holes require accurate placement of your tee shot after studying your options. The rough is tall enough to make finding a ball challenging, but real trouble arises only if you stray quite far from the fairway into the taller grass or lateral hazards. Greens are generally sloped from back to front and surprisingly fast. The par 3 fifth hole, 174 yards from the white tees, features a large two-tiered green set at an angle to the tee shot so that the lower tier is to the left and farther from the tee. A hole cut on the extreme left will be protected by trees, making it difficult to attack the pin. Unfortunately, a putt to that location from the right side of the green will gather speed down the slope and probably go off the green. A par is a very good score on this hole. The tee shot on the dogleg right 311 yard par 4 eighth hole requires a carry over a marshy area to a fairway that angles away from the tee to the right. Going farther right will leave a shorter approach, but raises the risk of dropping in the marsh. On the other hand, a too-well struck shot farther left might go through the fairway into a bunker or tall rough. A good tee shot will leave a short iron or wedge to an elevated green protected by a bunker on the front right. The back nine is quite different, with narrower fairways, most lined with large mature oak trees. This part of the course might better be named Clattering Oaks, rather than Whispering Pines, because our foursome heard many balls hitting wood on other fairways. We hit some, too. The 405 yard par 4 twelfth requires a tee shot favoring the right side of the fairway in order to avoid trees on the left that might hamper the approach. The green slopes severely from back to front so staying below the hole is imperative in order to par this hole. The finishing hole is a 210 yard par 3 with a green that is very wide but not very deep. A bunker protects the left side of the green, and two trees set so that the farthest one is obscured by the nearest make it almost impossible to hit a pin set on the extreme right of the green. Best strategy might be to lay up short of the green, chip on, and hope for a one-putt par. This was the first time playing this course for all in our foursome, and all of us agreed that it is definitely a course we would like to play again
Great course for the money
Fun course with many risk reward holes on the front 9, and 3 par 5s on the back are great for the long hitters.
The course is unique
I liked this course very much. Everyone is very friendly. I would definitely play there again.
Course with character
I enjoyed Whispering Pines because the holes seem so diffrent from the usual run if the mill layout. Mark and his staff are great hosts who genuinely show their desire for you to have a great golf experience. One concern: ladies golf gloves only item for women, no clothing like for men....this is so very typical of most courses.
Thank you for taking the time for writing a great review. We do apologize and are working on getting more ladies attire in the clubhouse.
Hello Dammer3, thank you for taking the time and leaving us an excellent review. We hope you can visit us again soon.
Great Course with a Fun Layout!
Love this course! Became a member for the first time this year and it was a great investment. The course can play as easy or as tough as you make it. I really enjoy the layout in that no two holes are similar. There are many bends and hills which make for a bit of a challenge. The greens are also in great shape. Would recommend for golfers of all skill levels.
Thanks for the great review!
Great Day
i have been playing whispering Pines for many years starting back when it was only 9 holes.. the course was in great shape the greens were smooth (not shagmolious like south brook) it was refreshing to see that someone at the course is trying to control cart traffic with ropes and pegs Well Done!
Awesome course and staff
Love the course layout. Greens in great condition.
Staff all very friendly. Must try this course if you haven’t yet.
Awesome fairways and greens. Food and drink is awesome.
Thanks for coming out to play Tom and please lets us know how we can make your golfing experience better moving forward.
Whispering Pines
Golf course was in great condition. We played on a weekday in the morning. No one in front and no one pushing us. The greens were in great condition. Some of the forward t-boxes had numerous leaves on them indicating they were not mown that day.
I would golf there again.
Fast Greens
The course was not busy, good conditions.
The greens were fast and smooth, very nice.
The sand traps were not maintained well, hard packed sand.
In super good shape
Fairways, bunkers and areas around the greens where in great shape and the greens were immaculate. Good speed to them too. If they were any faster being above the hole would've been really bad. Course looks open enough but don't let it fool you! Keep the ball in the fairway! Will definitely be back. 4 sets of tees makes it playable for everyone for everyone in your group!
Good enough design with well-kept greens
Second time playing Whispering Pines. Good design with some interesting holes & enough variety. Gently rolling terrain at times with a steeper elevation change on a couple holes. Some tree-lined holes & some open holes with fewer trees.
Front nine is a short par 34 with one par 5 & three par 3s. Back nine is a long par 37 (38 for women) with three par 5s and two par 3s (one par 3 for women). Despite how different the nines are, they are still pretty equally challenging but in different ways. I actually thought the shorter front nine was more interesting as holes 5, 6, 7 & 8 were all good & distinct holes.
Greens were in great shape. They were fast and about a handful had an area with very steep break. Rough was cut short to help find balls for Fall golf and they did a great job cleaning up all the leaves. However, tee boxes & fairways were a little rough & beat up and sand traps were no longer being maintained so were very hard.
Confusing layout from some of the holes to the next hole, but the well-marked signs help you figure out where to go.
Driving range was closed for the year. Practice putting green was awkward; the large decorative patch in the middle of the green significantly reduced the putting space, leaving only a smaller portion with steep breaks on almost every putt. I think the practice green would be better off without it as just a regular green with no obstructions & much more putting/chipping space. However, I liked the fairway portion next to the green to practice chip shots from the fairway as well as the rough.
Gas carts.
Recently renovated clubhouse to add a bar & grill with outdoor seating was a nice addition.
