Bad times at Normandie
Awful paid for 18, finished 9 at 3+!hours, gave up. Bad tee boxes, mud galore, bugs, rotten drainage etc... SLOW,
Great Layout, Rough Condition
The staff was great - kind and helpful! I enjoyed the course layout - it forces golferse to think about different length and types of golf shots.
On the other hand, the condition of the course was quite poor. Staff and maintenance have their work cut out for them. Washed out area due to the rain. Fairways are struggling. Bunkers are rock solid. Greens are okay. It was difficult to enjoy the different style of holes due to the conditions of the course.
We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry you didn't have a positive experience with us. We hope to improve in the future, so hopefully your next experience is 5 stars.
Terrible Condition
This course is a joke. The fairways were dirt or extremely patchy grass. The rough was extremely inconsistent and the greens were covered in crap. Save your money and go elsewhere
Course has very interesting history but
You can tell that the course has a lot of history but lacks the funds to give it a nice upgrade. Very wet not the courses fault but very messy.. it looks like they just shut it down then opened it up. No clean up from a long winter.
The best public layout in St. Louis
Here’s the deal: I never review stuff. Golf courses, auto shops, restaurants. Hasn’t been for me. I use reviews. I’m just a jackhole and don’t pay it back. Here’s the payback: this course is the best publicly-accessible layout in St. Louis. It has character. It has great long holes. It has great short holes. Half-pars? Try the par 3.5, 250 yard 18th. Try carrying the burn with a long iron on the approach to the 10th—a true par 4.5. The short par 4s are gorgeous. The long par 5s are stern and smiling. The par 3s are healthy, unique, and exciting. These are world class golf holes. So many of them are. This course has terrain. It has true hazards (looking straight at all the people complaining about the bunkers: don’t hit it there). It is thoroughly fair, and the best example of strategic design I’ve found in the St. Louis area. Every hole on the back nine is a gem—like, wow, what a golf hole. The green complexes are elegant and riveting—and delightfully quick. And it’s so. dang. cheap. Show up here and appreciate real, fun, thought-provoking golf. Here’s to the staff, and the green staff. You’ll see me back soon and often.
JOLTING
Greens were pretty good and many of the tee boxes were under renovation. It was cart path only but the cart paths were terrible. Too many huge trees with roots tearing them up. I spilled more beer than I drank.. Tough on the old back.
Senior course, too fast pace of play
Poor clubhouse, tee times stacked on top of each other and almost everyone else was hitting from the senior tees so we could not keep pace with them starting half way down the fairway. After letting 5 groups play through before the turn, we gave up. We play ready golf but this was ridiculous. We finished the front 9 in 1.5 hours and were still pressured. No thanks.
Good Round
Scored a nice hot deal with a 9:33am tee time. Upon arrival, was informed I was already good to go and could load up. Good price, good pace, good round!
Value Golf
Most of the recent reviews are pretty spot on, however the fairways are looking mostly okay with the cooler weather. Almost all the greens are playing very nice. I agree about the bunkers being terrible, however just avoid them at all cost; if you have skills, the bunkers won’t kill your game.
This is a fun course, but don’t show up paying their premium rate and try comparing it to a high end public course, or following a golfing trip to Florida. ;)
Great Course..... Hit it in the fairways!
Course was in good condition and played very fair. It penalizes you if you don't hit your shots. Rough is fair and will penalize you if you hit into it. Tough pin placement. Greens were fast today and were challenging to say the least. I will be back.......
Neat Course
Classic old course that had a lot of tall trees that were like magnets for my left to right flight path. Course was a little rough in places but a good value. Great old school style course...Everyone should play it
Fun round at a great value on GolfNow
It’s a fun course in fair condition. Fairways are nice and greens are good enough. Layout is okay, it’s not boring. A lot of blind tee shots and some interesting par 5s and 3s. A couple cool par 4s. Maintenance of course seems a little negligent but even so the course is still in good condition. I highly recommend for a good price! (~$35 for the weekends and ~$20 for the weekdays)
Needs Better Maintenance and Appropriate Pricing
The people working there were very nice, I’ll give them that. Condition was very poor, tee to green. If they charged $25 peak I wouldn’t complain but for $45 much more should be expected. The layout is somewhat interesting and very tough, which made the the bare lies even worse. The greens were hard to putt on, very bumpy through dead patches and inconsistent speed throughout. If they were priced appropriately I would call it an okay budget course but for what they charge I’d say look elsewhere.
Absolutely horrible
The fairways were dirt, the tee boxes were mud/dirt and no grassc the greens were 50/50, pace of play was horrible. Backed up on every tee, the cartpaths were a joke. There were potholes or just gravel on a ton of them. There were also weeds on the greens. Save your money and play somewhere else.
Solid Course, Terrible Pace
I played with a 4 some on Saturday. It was an amazing day so I knew it would be slow. I was anticipating a 5 hour round. After the front 9 we were locked in at 3 hours. We waited essentially every time we needed to hit a ball. The group behind us left and just skipped multiple holes. I've played Normandie a dozen or so times. I don't think you'll find more challenging greens for a public course and the conditions are very good for the amount of traffic. The issue is that there is a lack of public courses that are worth your time in STL, so courses like Normandie get a lot of attention. I also think it's fairly challenging and there are a ton of trees to hit which can make high handicap golfers even slower. I haven't been able to put my finger on what makes this course so slow but it's consistent. The guys in the group ahead of us said they only play the course when they have to due to poor pace of play. This didn't ruin my day at all but something needs to be done to speed up pace. Either don't book the course with so many tee times or keep a Marshall on the course or don't book so many tee times and stagger things so golfers are tee'd off on 2 before someone starts on one. Other courses figure this out, I play all of them but for some reason Normandie can't. I also think due to the hills and slope there are a numbers of blind drives or blind second shots on both the front and back 9. There needs to be a red light/green light board at the top of the hills that golfers flip for the next group when they move on to their 3rd shots. Driving to the top of the hill and coming back down to the tee box to make sure you aren't going to hit someone is silly and further slows things down.
Love the rock
I always enjoy playing “The Rock”. Course isn’t in the best shape but it’s always a blast. A lot of the tee boxes seem like they are under repair... Front 9 is in a lot better shape than the back 9.
Needs a major influx of cash to be good again
This course itself is a decent design and has tons of character. Quite a bit of amazing tree lines but the condition is horrible...a real dirt track. Spend the extra money and go somewhere else.
