Management
Hole 11 &12 not really ready for play yet. Half the fairways had standing water due to the rain we had all week. THEY INSISTED my son wear a collard shirt. So had to buy one in pro shop.
Totally uncalled for considering course conditions and that there is no attire requirement when making reservations on GOLFNOW app.
Great Condition!
Played here twice before 2 years ago n OK! New Owner, Sal M, builder n developer in Monmouth County supposedly has put millions into upgrading conditions and it shows! Fairway lush n NOT burnt out, greens were just fertilized which affected roll BUT in immaculate condition! Started at Monmouth County courses then Old Orchards 30yrs ago, then Bamm Holliow for 10 yrs,, this course is a winner! Only fault is some drainage issues that affect play but I believe will be addressed in the near future!
What have you done!!
I have played this Tillinghast course many time in the past when it was owned and operated by Ft. Monmouth. It was $40 for 18 holes and another $10 for the cart. Since the Martelli group took it over, they removed more than 150 trees, all the bushes, and created a quarter mile walk from the parking lot to the pro shop/first tee!! All for a whopping $73 total!!! Did it occure to you that all the trees and bushes are what made the course challenging? The way the professional golf designer intended it to be! There is a reason builders build homes and not golf courses. I am a 17 handicap and shot an 82 on this new, wide open, Martelli design! So sad. Do yourself a favor, pay the fee for a county card and go play some real courses.
*** One more note that I can't ignore....The starter/Ranger.....AWESOME!!! One of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
At least the Martelli's got that right!!
Worth playing at least once
Mixed results and the course needs some work on several holes.
Greens are excellent. They are in great condition (except for 17), putting speed is fast, and challenging. Great combination.
Fairways needs some work but overall in OK condition but the tee boxes are awful. Additionally a few very short holes that slow down the pace of play do to golfers going for the green!
Overall worth playing and the price was reasonable comparatively to other courses in the Monmouth county area.
Great improvements .
Vastly improved from previous years.
Greens are in great shape
I hear it’s getting better...
Played this course for the first time on 4th of July. It’s average at best but I hear they’re working on it so I may give it a try again next year. Too many better courses nearby to go back before then...
Tillinghast Gem
Since opening to the public Suneagles has been a nice place to play. What it lacked for condition was made up by access and the layout.
Now that there's a new owner, the conditions are greatly improved. It will take a few years to complete the restoration, but don't wait, play it now.
It may not be the classic Tillinghast courses of Wing Foot, Baltusrol, or Bethpage, but who gets to play those anyway? However, the layout is better than Forest Hills, Shackamaxon, or Suburban. All three are wonderful clubs with great Tillinghast designs, but Suneagles is more interesting.
The course is short, but the small undulating greens, with well places bunkers will challenge your approach shots, even with short irons.
If not for summer traffic on the Parkway, I'd play it more often. If you haven't yet do so. Be warned the 10th is playing from temp tees, doesn't ruin the experience, but some will be disappointed.
Hot day....good golf
94 degrees but that's ok...no one on the course...2 players riding took 3hrs...they are making a real effort to improve the course ...place looks much better than in the past....starter was super friendly
Back 9
Front 9 was great back 9 underwater.. temp tee on hole 10.. otherwise good course
Friendly
Course was in good shape especially for all the water it took the last few days .. 10th hole is a temporary green tho .
The course is going through some much needed upgrades. The weather has been very wet and the course showed it, but the cleanup and work on Hole 10 show a renewed sense of respect by the management to return this treasured course to its former status.
Maybe Next Year
Course is under fairly new management and is undergoing several changes/improvements. Right now, things are a bit rough. Tee boxes are pretty beat up. Hole #10 is being totally redone, and the temporary set up is pretty awful.
Layout can be confusing. For example, leaving 5th green looking for 6th tee it is nowhere to be found. The large tee marker says hole number 9 instead of 6. took a few minutes to figure out that it HAD to be #6 and was mis-marked.
I hope that with another season under their belt, the course will show some real improvements.
In need of repair!!
Don’t consider playing here for at least 2 or3 months. New owners need to get their act together fast. Repairs are way behind schedule.
