Overall review
Wanted to give a real review of this course. I showed up here for the first time in August ‘21 and had quite low expectations for course conditions due to reviews. Off the first tee you will immediately notice it’s a course loaded with natural structure, it’s got a lot of tree rock woods bush etc. and the holes are quite thin. If you do like want a challenge this course is not for you as it is extremely unforgiving even on great shots. I smoked my 3 wood off hole 1 for what I thought would he dead center and I did not find my ball. Throughout the course on top of natural structure the fairways are quite firm and very true throughout. They are fast rolling and hard bouncing and take a precise shot. It’s very easy to send a ball off into the woods that landed in the fairway. Upon arriving to the greens throughout the course I was expecting fairly bad greens in awful locations but was happy to find they were perfectly great greens with a very true roll. Nothing insane for breaks what so ever. Quite soft on the landing when I played but pretty fast due to proper maintenance. There are a lot of forced shots on the course that will make you take out irons Off the tee and on Forced layups. Bottom line this course takes a lot of precise shots on narrow fairways with lots of structure but it is a fantastic course for the challenge and in great condition. If you are a better golfer who wants to get 18 holes of very very good target practice throughout the bag on a very nice challenging course with lots of recovery this place is highly recommended. Bad reviews of this place are written due to poor play. Expect a little longer pace of play due to people looking for their balls and messing up shots. Place is cheap on top of it which makes it a fantastic place for someone who knows what they are doing.
Unlikely to play again
Far too narrow of a track for the average golfer. I’m a 10 handicap and did not really enjoy the round. 2 stroke penalty for anything thats bot an arrow down the fairway. A few of the holes have fairways that are no more than 20 yards wide in parts. Condition was playable but nothing to write home about. Tons of crab grass growing in fairways and greens marked up quite a bit.
Nice staff and enjoyed the day, just prefer other courses in the area that to me are more a enjoyable to play.
Unforgiving
Narrow fairways, with no room for error. All the holes fairways and green have steep slopes. Not a good place for below average players. Ball is hard to track due to course layout and well you get the idea…
Very Challenging course !
This course need a lot of management, otherwise we lose a lot of balls.
Nice course , reasonably priced
Practice facilities are inadequate. Not allowed to hit Driver on the range
First time playing course, very narrow which makes it challenging and you have to use every club in bag. The greens were in poor condition and the pin location and slopes made it very difficult to score.
Pace of play is slow
I go to Somers national a lot. Some of the tee boxes could use work. They have worked to fix the greens. The pace of play is awful though. You can easily wait 10-15 minutes to tee of on your next hole if you’re an above average golfer. I understand not everyone can drive the ball 300+ but neither do the people I play with and we’ve had to wait for almost every shot we took. We left after 5 hours only playing 13 holes.
Decent course- could be improved
Decent course- lots of tree-lined fairways and decent elevation changes. GPS was necessary and a nice part of playing. Nice course to take a hike… but tough to play.
Starter told us lots of people don’t hit driver… so then, what’s the point? Would play better with better tree maintenance (cut low/overhanging limbs), better irrigation (greens were super wet and some muddy/lumpy fairways) and longer rough (for when the ball rolls from the fairway into the woods).
Not worth it
I am all about a challenging course, but this course is narrow for the sake of being narrow. There is almost no rough, just a narrow fairway followed by trees that are thick with brush. But the worst part is the greens. Poorly maintained with stupid pin positions that slope straight down.
Wouldn't be a bad course for $40. But for $75 there are much better options. Only saving grace is that the pace of play is good because no one wants to play here.
Good value
Very challenging course, it’s tight and a lot of hills so a lot of blind shots. The tee box’s were in rough shape but the rest of the course was in good condition. The greens were extremely hard to read. Kudos to the grounds crew because those greens messed me up on all 18 holes!
