Unmown fairway at Somers Pointe West! Photo submitted by Natmare on 07/05/2013
Very fun but TOUGH
On the shorter side, but that does not make it any easier. It will punish the long hitter that cannot shape or hit consistently straight. Very much target golf.. Tightest course ive ever played. Leave the driver at home if you hit it 250+, and club selection is key. Great variety. Greens/fairways in terrific shape. No bev service, or even bar/grill at the turn on a Saturday morning (could be a staffing isssue). Good luck, amd godspeed
Just Okay
Course is very poorly maintained and definitely not worth the cost. There are plenty of other courses in northern Westchester or lower Putnam with better value for you dollar.
Nice course in good condition despite significant rain recently. The tee boxes could have been better but everything else was in great shape. Friendly staff. Vinny was great
Nice day, but only played fair.
The course is rather narrow. The pin placements on many holes were in extremely difficult locations. Never seen this before.
Don’t trust anyone’s handicap
Based on reviews, I expected a dozen balls lost and bad conditions- almost cancelled. After playing, I think all these “low-to-mid handicappers” might have gotten their cap from their home course and knowing every yardage and club to hit on it. Fairways are somewhat narrow in spots, but the rough isn’t that rough. Just like any course, if you hit a massive hook or slice, you’re in for a bad time. If you can hit fades/draws, it’ll be light work. Greens are in pretty good shape but, as usual, not everyone fixes their pitch marks. They play quickly too. The course is a good balance of risk/reward and makes you think more than most. Ranger was on people that were slow. The only knock I saw was that some of the tee boxes were rough, also typical later in the season.
Overall review
Wanted to give a real review of this course. I showed up here for the first time in August ‘21 and had quite low expectations for course conditions due to reviews. Off the first tee you will immediately notice it’s a course loaded with natural structure, it’s got a lot of tree rock woods bush etc. and the holes are quite thin. If you do like want a challenge this course is not for you as it is extremely unforgiving even on great shots. I smoked my 3 wood off hole 1 for what I thought would he dead center and I did not find my ball. Throughout the course on top of natural structure the fairways are quite firm and very true throughout. They are fast rolling and hard bouncing and take a precise shot. It’s very easy to send a ball off into the woods that landed in the fairway. Upon arriving to the greens throughout the course I was expecting fairly bad greens in awful locations but was happy to find they were perfectly great greens with a very true roll. Nothing insane for breaks what so ever. Quite soft on the landing when I played but pretty fast due to proper maintenance. There are a lot of forced shots on the course that will make you take out irons Off the tee and on Forced layups. Bottom line this course takes a lot of precise shots on narrow fairways with lots of structure but it is a fantastic course for the challenge and in great condition. If you are a better golfer who wants to get 18 holes of very very good target practice throughout the bag on a very nice challenging course with lots of recovery this place is highly recommended. Bad reviews of this place are written due to poor play. Expect a little longer pace of play due to people looking for their balls and messing up shots. Place is cheap on top of it which makes it a fantastic place for someone who knows what they are doing.
Unlikely to play again
Far too narrow of a track for the average golfer. I’m a 10 handicap and did not really enjoy the round. 2 stroke penalty for anything thats bot an arrow down the fairway. A few of the holes have fairways that are no more than 20 yards wide in parts. Condition was playable but nothing to write home about. Tons of crab grass growing in fairways and greens marked up quite a bit.
Nice staff and enjoyed the day, just prefer other courses in the area that to me are more a enjoyable to play.
