Unmown fairway at Somers Pointe West! Photo submitted by Natmare on 07/05/2013
Always Delivers
The course and team at Somers National always deliver a good and challenging round. You’re required to make every kind of shot, tough greens and overall everything to make you a better golfer. The team is friendly and welcoming even to non members. Be respectful to the staff and course and you’re sure to have a good time.
Was like a cow pasture
Played several times last summer and enjoyed it much more. When called asked what kind of shape the course was in. Was told, not bad, only a few holes had issues because not enough rain.we travelled an hour to get there. Course address does not come up on GPS! Drove around in circles trying to get to the entrance! When we got there we were told that GPS seems to have a problem with it.
We found the course to be in terrible shape. Especially the front nine! The back nine was in better shape than the front but still not good.
Would really have to think if we were willing to even attempt to play there again!
Of all the courses I’ve playe
Out of all the courses I be played in the tri state area, this one was by far the least enjoyable. From the cart rattling/banging, to the unidentified carts paths, the sand trap teeboxes .... oh and those two holes that together create a full circle, very odd.
If the price was more like $25, it would make more sense.
Did the greens keepers quit?
Tee boxes are a mess, bunkers not raked by grounds crew, a bunch of greens and fairs ways were affected by fungus/disease and burnt out. Layout is a little gimmicky, I used my driver on only 3 holes.
Pleasant surprise
If not for the second hole and the Tee boxes this course would be phenomenal. I find it challenging and pleasantly surprise by the layout. I liked it so much the first time I booked it a week later.
Take of two courses
Back nine in great shape.
Front nine in fair shape.
Average
Poor greens conditions....no beer cart.....pace was quick
The fairways had a lot of dead spots all over the T boxes were also poor with a lot of sand in them. I’ve played at Somers before and enjoyed playing this course but last time I played at Somers the course conditions were a lot better then yesterday round very unhappy with the course conditions. The staff were very friendly and helpful
Dead spots all over the greens
Dead spots all over the greens. Not to mention the greens had a large amount of big ball marks even early in the morning.
Terrible Upkeep
75% of the greens had patches of dirt, the cart paths needed to be repaved 5 years ago, starter told us we couldn't bring water on the course unless we all put them in our cup holders, half way house wasn't even prepared to make a hot dog (took 15 mins), we found a dead goose in the middle of the fairway on 4, and the tee boxes were in terrible shape.. not worth $70/round.. safe to say I'm not playing here ever again
Garbage course
This is the second time writing a review as it seems The other disappeared. The greens are basically dirt patches, the course layout is absurd and the starter tried to tell us we can’t bring water onto the course... they basically built a condominium complex and said hey let’s make a random golf course in between everything! I wouldn’t play this course again if I had to and I recommend to not waste your time and money here. The only 2 somewhat enjoyable holes were 2 par 4s on the back 9. The par 5s on this course all basically make u turns and you have to lay up off the tee boxes with irons. There was no joy in this course besides drinking with my friends in the cart.
Yikes
Unless you have no other options I would avoid playing this course. I have never seen greens in worse condition than this. Starter tried stopping my buddy from bringing water out onto the course. The layout is also absurd as well. I can’t tell if they just built a bunch of condos and then decided to place a golf course in between all of them but that’s what it feels Like. If it was Cheaper for a round I’d refrain from this kind of a complaint but I’d avoid it.
Disappointed
Paying $75 for a weekend round (with a cart) is expected around the westchester area, however this price for a course in this condition is a rip-off. Almost every single green had brown spotting and in some cases dirt patches. Green spray paint over the greens was not only noticeable it stained everyone’s golf balls and shoes. There were some pleasant and challenging holes with some great views but overall I was very disappointed in this course. Do not waste your money playing here.
Very Poor Course Layout
The 2nd hole fairway is on the side of a hill which which slants left to right. I hit my driver 200 yards straight up the left and based on the course design the ball landed, bounced and rolled all the way OB on the right side. I was the first to tee off and the 3 others in my group had the same thing happen. Unless you can hit your drive consistently over 300 yards, this is an impossible hole. The hole foreshadows the rest of the course which was filled with a ridiculous amount of narrow doglegs. By the time you hit the back 9 you're no longer enjoying the round.
Accommodative and Fair-Value
I'd like to revise my prior negative review of the course. While some aspects like employee interactions and tee-boxes could use a bit of work, the experience at the course is a great value. It's often times very difficult to find a course to play in Westchester County for below $45 and have an experience like the one you get at Somers National. While that warrants a lot of younger golfers, it's worth the occasional "FORE".
Narrowest course ever
I would not recommend this course to anybody. It is insanely narrow, has very slopey fairways, and you can barely use driver on any holes. Absolute waste of money might as well go to the driving range instead while you're at it.
Course is an afterthought
1. Course is a trap for walking. It is insanely undulating, like not one flat area ANYWHERE in the course. Then, they'll charge you $30 to cart it up. So it's a trap. Don't walk it. I did, felt it for three days.
2. Club has this air that the housing development came first, then added the golf course to try to make it more "private". Club screams that it wants to be private but financially can't.
3. If you are going to allow walking as a GC, then at least give them a guide. I had probably 4-5 tee shots that I thought were perfect, but were OB/Red stake/Lost because there is NO HOLD IN ANY FAIRWAY. I get difficult, but this wasn't difficult fun. This was difficult for the sake of being difficult. Course needs water BAD. I only had all pars, three doubles (thanks layout) and two bogeys.
4. Greens are like playing putt putt. Too fast, not consistent, and impossible to read because of the inconsistency. So you just tap everything and hope for the best, even uphill - 14 stemp easy. Par 5's have such extreme dog legs that you have to hit irons off the tees. There are two drivable par 4's on the back that should have probably been designed as a par 3 and a longer par 4. It's like the architect didn't know what he was doing on some of the holes. All the holes are risk and no reward for the risk except the short par 4's.
5. If I am putting the 50+ minute drive from northern Manhattan to go play, I will go to Bethpage, Van Courtland, Hudson Valley, The Garrison 100x before coming to this course. It just simply isn't a lot of fun. Why make a 500+ double dogleg par 5 and make me hit iron off the tee?
Good experience, but I wouldn't play this course again unless I really had to.
Nice course
We played today 6/20 and they course was in good condition. The tee boxes were torched due to volume but everything else was good. The greens were extremely fast, extremely! Staff was great and friendly. Only suggestion would be to clean up areas off holes but that’s being picky. Would play again.
