Great value for the price
The course has 27 holes, I played the 18 hole West course. It's in excellent shape because it's a part of the condo community and serves as their country golf. Excellent shape, loved the views, staff was friendlyand it was a wonderful time.
Pace could have ben a bit faster.
Tough track but nice
This is a nice, tough golf course. You have to play more strategically than most courses. Well groomed tee boxes, plush fairways, so so greens. The only negative thing is the staff in the pro shop. Because I wasn't a member, I felt he treated me poorly. I would still come back to play.
fungus growing on back 9 greens
Nice course with different elevation changes to challenge golfers. Pace of play was great. Wasnt happy about the fungus growing on all the greens on the back 9. Asked one of the workers there and his response was, "yeah, it's out of control. "
Tight and Tough
If it's your first time playing here, bring a lot of balls. A tricky course with a lot of tight holes and sharp dog legs, club selection is incredibly important. And when you tee off on the par 5 5th, it's never more evident. A 560+ yard hole that bends sharp left after only 200 yards, making it impossible to hit more than a hybrid off the tee for many golfers. Then for your next shot, you still have no view of the green, because it's another two hundred yard shot before you have to turn right and hit your 150+ yard approach over water and into the green. An eagle hole this is not.
But then the next two holes give you a chance to make up for it, with two very drive able par 4's. So there are opportunities to score, provided you can hit it down the middle on these tight tree lined fairways.
Otherwise, the conditions are decent with nice fairways to play from. But the sand traps are atrocious and many of the greens are too soft and diseased with a weird smooth green fungus.
Overall, a private course that only warrants a county price tag. But most county course hackers will want to steer clear, as the tight and difficult layout can make for a very frustrating round if you're not playing it smart and hitting it straight.
Difficult but not in the best condition
Tough course with narrow fairways and fast greens. Because it is a private course not many people playing, which was nice. The fairways are in good condition , but the sand bunkers are horrible. Not sand but hard dirt. The kind you would expect to find on a cheap public course. Also the greens had a fair amount of damage on them for some reason. However, only paid 20 bucks, so for that price I would go again, but don't expect a private course feel.
Somers Pointe West - Stay away
Unless you have a spare dozen balls you wish to contribute to the woods. Because of a wacky layout where the condos take precedence over course design, doglegs (and short ones) abound.
One hole, a 460 yd par 4 or 5 - (guess they can't make a decision) had a 10 yd fairway. You CANNOT use a wood on a majority of par 4's -- or even par 5's.
Playing speed was fine until I came up on a twosome who played like granny on a Sunday drive. I came up on them as they were just leaving the tee with an entire hole open in front and they did not offer to let me play thru. After watching them for 22 mins play this hole, I skipped the next hole and went around them.
Then after one more hole, it rained and I left with 3 holes remaining.
Bad experience...and I'm pretty forgiving.
Worst course ever played on!
I have never been on such a hilly course with narrow fairways. For the price of $65 I would expect flawless fairways and a course that I didn't actually get lost on. There are no directional signs on most holes directing you to the next hole. We often found ourselves backtracking to the correct hole. The course was VERY HILLY and fairways were like a ski mogul mountain. I nearly bounced out of the cart several times. I am an advanced golfer as was my partner and were visiting from out of town. We never expected for such an affluent area that this course was rated so highly. Clearly they must be regulars who haven't been exposed to what a decent and well maintained course should be.
We are sorry we wasted our money here. Staff was fair at best.
not very nice inside
Arrived with printout for 18 holes. The guy said, "No it's only for 9 holes". I asked him to check with golfnow. He refused. I had to call golfnow myself to have them call the course. How utterly stupid when dealing with a new customer. Why would I go back and why would I recommend this course. They made me feel like they didn't trust me, thought I was lying.
Great Course & Great Staff
This past weekend was the first time I played the course, and I was definitely impressed! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, especially the bag attendants and the pro-shop staff.
The course is well maintained, and definitely has some challenging holes. I am impressed with the layout of the course. The fairways are not right on top of each other, and are well proportioned to the distance of the hole.
I am glad I tried Somers Pointe, and will definitely be returning for another round of 18 soon!
Absolutely Awful
It stared with a rude golf pro who didn't even acknowledge my presence in the pro show at check in, then the course ran out of golf carts (had to wait 55 minutes for one), then there was a driving range without golf balls to hit, then there was no water available for the golf cart and the bathroom was a disgrace (stuffed toilet), no starters (foursomes just walking on cutting the line), no rangers to keep the pace going,....I could go on and on...worse fathers day golf ever....Nice cart boy and great bartender...but don't know how they are in existence
Good Conditions, Challenging Layout
Where to begin... This course kind of ate me alive. I was impressed with the conditions for the most part, but some greens were patchy with some type of fungus on them (18th for example). The $30 GolfNow deal was excellent for this country club with few rounds per day, good service, good practice facilities, and good conditions that are much better than Westchester's crowded county courses.
Pros: great conditions; free range balls and balls for chipping/putting; good value for the $$$; not crowded at all; course layout is not boring by any means.
Cons: this is a difficult course unless you hit very straight and accurate shots. If you like to work the ball and play by feel, you will have difficulty playing the way you want to. Many holes are tight with woods and hazards guarding both sides of the fairways. Many holes are also ridiculous doglegs, double-doglegs, and believe it or not-- one is horseshoe-shaped. Lots of blind shots will leave you frustrated. BEWARE THE #1 AND #2 HANDICAPPED HOLES. If you can get away with bogeys on these two, you will muster a good round. Also, some of the greens aren't in the best shape, but the balls roll true for the most part.
To sum it up, definitely try it. But don't expect a good score the first time out.
Great Course
Found course to be in excellent condition. Very well maintained. Altough not the longest course, it is very challenging because it is definately a shot makers course. Well worth the money.
Challenging Hilly Course
Course plays about 6000 yards from white tees. Lots of doglegs, heavily wooded, narrow fairways and lots of hills, requiring concise shots. Greens are pretty fast but not too difficult to read. Course was not busy when I played, and able to finish in under 3 1/2 hours.
Great Value
Avery tight and narrow course with vastly improved conditions .Felt like we were away from it all at this wooded track .Not a bad drive from southern Westchester.
Hidden Gem
This course was new to GolfNow and a group of us decided to try it. It was absolutely great! The weather was perfect, the course in great condition all around - fairways and tee boxes well maintained, greens seem to have spots with some sort of disease on the grass but rolled fast and were challenging. There were other players on the course but all moving well and at times it even felt that we had the course to ourselves. Finished the round in a little over 4 hours. Will be back and definitely recommend to others. It is an excellent course with plenty of challenges and beautiful surroundings.
Great deal for private course
Played through golf now. Paid great price really enjoyed course. Fun layout. Tough green
Tight and Interesting Course
This course was built with many holes that thread their way through a hilly residential development so many holes would be considered tight. Considering the soaking rains of the previous 2 days drainage seemed good. If you like playing in the afternoon after 1:30pm player traffic is light I was told and indeed playing alone I was able to complete 18 holes in slightly over 3 hours. I began at 3:30 and was done by about 6:30
Unexpected
This course was tough to find when entered in the GPS. Luckily, a cop helped me find the course. As for the course, being from Dutchess County, I was expecting a course in Westchester to be much better than this course. When we first hopped in our cart, we had no idea where the first tee box was. The difficulty of the course was true to its description on the website. Hard! Not a bad course, we were just expecting more. Had a great time still!
Very pleasantly surprised
Am probably a little "golf snobby" and expected little from this course having lived in Westchester Co for 30 years and never played it until today. It is short and quirky with really interesting greens. It is fun! The course offers many opportunities to score well, but penalizes indifferent shots. Fairways appear to be narrow, but in fact are more generous than they appear. The course is all about the greens and where you place approach shots. Putting is at a premium
