Unmown fairway at Somers Pointe West! Photo submitted by Natmare on 07/05/2013
Very pleasantly surprised
Am probably a little "golf snobby" and expected little from this course having lived in Westchester Co for 30 years and never played it until today. It is short and quirky with really interesting greens. It is fun! The course offers many opportunities to score well, but penalizes indifferent shots. Fairways appear to be narrow, but in fact are more generous than they appear. The course is all about the greens and where you place approach shots. Putting is at a premium
Solid Course for $35 or less
Played here on a hot deal for $25. Course was in pretty good shape considering how late in the season it is. A few greens were beat up but the majority were very good and actually sort of fast. Course is extremely hilly and on the short side. I'd give the course a better review but there is a par 5 on the back that doesn't even qualify as a golf hole to me. The landing area off the tee shot is about 20 paces wide... very "tricked" out hole. Area is very scenic and staff was nice. Bar didn't have hot chocolate which was weird considering the time of year.
It a must visit golf course.
The course is well maintained the greens were fast and enjoyable. Great layout with picturisque views. Course staff was extremely friendly. I am planning another trip before the end of the season.
Very nice golf course with nice view and challenges
Nice layout, Some very narrow fairway and a few blind uphill shots, various elevation and some water. A few brown, dry spots on some green around the edges, other than that it's excellent.
Great course for the money... Tough greens
Really enjoyed playing here. Quick pace of play, well kept and the views are great. It's moderately challenging, however the greens make it a very difficult course. They're quick and have LOTS of break.
Definitely recommend playing here.
very challenging, and scenic.
Played this course for the first time, course was very challenging, and, accurate shot position is a must
A real challenge, tight fairways, must really think your way around the course.
My playing partner and I were totally eaten up by the course. Lots of dog legs, changes in elevation, fast greens, blind shots, tight fairways a real challenge. I am a 13 handicap and shot a 107, ouch!! I am going back to get even with this course. If you want a challenging course I highly recommend it.
Interesting layout. Requires good accuracy. A lot of sharp doglegs. Difficult for someone like me playing the course for the first time.
Very scenic and beautiful. Interesting layout. Requires good accuracy. A lot of sharp doglegs and blind tee shots. Difficult for someone like me playing the course for the first time. I had a great time.
Get rid of those leaves
All the nice things kept me coming back, but this time, tree leaves were all over - on the fairway and greens, especially in the back nine made it very frustrating.
Excellent Greens and architecture
Beautiful elevation and colors with the autumnal leaf change. Lovely views. Played at an enjoyable pace of play. Nice bar and restaurant "The Pinnacle" for the 19th hole.
Course in great shape- some tight fairways -
A golf course to play again and again - always a new game
Greens have been given special attention for mold damage -
Returned in excellent shape- definitely play again -
Nice Place to play
The staff was very cordial and accommodating. Even though I was there with a "Super Saver" from Golf Now, I was treated the same as a regular member. The course is narrow in places and very woodsy. Unless you hit the fairway all the time, it is easy to lose balls there. The threesome in front of us, as well as my threesome, spent a lot of time looking for balls. The greens, except for one, were in great shape. Fairways are well maintained. Overall I would go again, even if I had to pay full price.
Good challenge course but needs a little attention.
This course has some good challenging holes that make you think twice about what club to use. Should I go for it? or should I play it safe? was always on my mind when I came to the dog leg left and right holes.. and there are plenty. The tee boxes are in good conditions and the fairways for most part are decent, except in some parts where they are worn off from flooding. The greens are where most of the attention is needed. They are really fast but not for the right reasons. Most of them have some dark brown mold that has grown on them and once they roll the greens, it becomes more like flat dirt making it very difficult to putt. The other thing that was odd was that for this time a year the course was empty. Not a bad thing for me since I was able to hit multiple balls and work on my game a little more. Overall I think the course was ok. I think if the greens were tended to then it would be a course I would go more often during the summer.
A 9 hole gem
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the less than good conditions in a very few spots and the fetid pond that mars one of the late holes. The greens were true and the course was hilly and quite challenging. It claims to be one of the high spots in Westchester County and I can see why. I intend to try the 18 hole course here soon.
very seldom a wait
it"s a great practice course for a good player..narrow not long but very demanding I'm a senior and a 6 handicapp..its putting the ball in the right spots here or you can be in big trouble....the best by far part about the course is that not that many people know about it....I played on a Sunday afternoon 1:15 pm.....no waiting and few people on the course
course not kept up greens are very poor condition
Like layout. Everybody is friendly. but course needs help. Greens has fungus problem brown and dried up. Fairway patchy
Need attention
Challenging picturesque and narrow course with doglegs left and right. Some areas country club quality except for some spotty fairways, tees great shape, unfortunately 5 or 6 greens troubled by fungus disease. A few fairways have thin and soggy areas. Cart paths need attention as some were gravel or dirt.
Sadly, this could be a great course with proper management.
I would not recommend it.
Course Needs Extensive Maintenance
I had heard about this course for some time and was curious to play it. My partner and I were quite disappointed.
The good: Course is quite challenging; going uphill and down dale. it wanders through the grounds with almost zero side-by-side fairways, so if you hit into the the woods, the ball is gone. Fairways are narrow with little rough before the woods. Most green are fast and crowned, so if you roll too far you will roll off. Course requires great shot accuracy -- definitely NOT a place for beginners or those with accuracy issues.
The bad: Tee boxes were terrible -- very uneven; apparently they haven't seen a roller in years. Many greens are badly worn (either by too much or too little watering or by poor mowing); again, simple maintenance has been neglected. And apparently nobody who plays this course believes in repairing ball marks on the greens (and the maintenance people do nothing to fix them, either).
Some distances are hard to gauge; there are no markers on the sprinkler heads and no 150-yard poles. There are marker stones (rectangular, not circle) on the sides for 200, 150 and 100 yards, but I question the accuracy of some of the positions. Some fairways have been devastated by water damage -- often you are playing off of dirt with barely any grass to be seen for yards around. Numerous drain and service covers on course are broken or missing. And some sand bunkers have nothing more than dirt while others are over-run with weeds.
Design of several holes was ridiculous -- The 553-yard par-5 fifth has a double dog-leg with a blind, completely unnecessary water hazard that is immediately adjacent to the front of the green (that slopes INTO the hazard!); the ninth has a completely blind, massive water hazard that cannot be seen from the tee (nor could anyone in their right mind anticipate that a designer would put one at that location).
On-course bathrooms (away from clubhouse) were locked and beverage vending machines were either empty or broken -- a completely unacceptable situation in the heat of mid-August.. On a hot day (88 degrees) my partner and I noticed exactly one water dispenser -- and that was on the 16th tee (when it could provide minimal aid); glad we brought our own. We had to improvise about the lack of toilets.
Signs for each hole offer little guidance as to the actual layout -- a huge disadvantage on a course with many hidden water hazards. Maps on the scorecard were tiny and sometimes misleading as to location or extent of hazards.
Overall, the lack of maintenance made this course a disappointing experience. I got a great deal from GolfNow so the price was very reasonable, but I would only consider returning to Somers Pointe if I saw another extraordinary deal on GolfNow (and even then I would have to think long and hard about returning).
Challenging holes on about half the holes.slightbreatheron other half.
Really like this course. Nice private club experience.
Interesting layout, but too many holes can't use driver.
Most difficulty is on greens. Fast with subtle breaks which are hard to guage. Fairways are kept well, but there are several areas which have had water damage due to rainy season. Some of the greens also have been damaged in areas. The staff was not interested in assisting golfnow customers. I asked to play with others, and they said they had nobody coming. Several minutes later they said there would be a twosome for me to join. While I was waiting, the twosome already started play, and the assistant hadn't mentioned to them that I would be joining them. "We don't know who the golfnow people are, and they might not have checked in".
