Great course, very slow play
Course is in great shape, clean and well maintained.
Play is very slow. Started playing at 5:45 am, still a 5 hr round.
Stuck in a monsoon!
First time playing a Staten Island course. Originally was going to play Silver Lake till my tee time got cancelled due to an outing. I ended up getting a hot deal here instead for $31 walking and it was definitely worth that price. Pretty well taken care of course with only a few dirt heavy tee boxes. Green were well taken care of and the fairways cut well. Got stuck in a monsoon crossing to the back 9 which ended up killing our pace of play as many stopped to hide from the weather. Other than slow play, the round was a great time and I would recommend it. Especially if you get a hot deal
Great Course, but Slow Round
I really like this course. Vibes are good and course is maintained well, but sometimes the rounds can be long. I've played her a decent amount of times and the pace of play has been pretty good for a weekend public course, but this most recent round was pretty long. Still had a great time though.
Quality public course
Very fair layout, lengthy fairways, penal high rough, fast greens. Hadn't played here in 2 years and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the agronomy; much better than I remembered and I understand new management team is the reason. Hope they continue with this attentiveness.
Worst pace of play imagineable
The pace of play here is always absolutely horrible be ready to deal with multiple groups on one hole ..the tee times are too close together but the management doesn’t care what so ever they are trying to fix up the course but other then that it’s horrible and the range balls are a absolute disgrace to the game of golf they don’t even have dimples and half the bucket is broken balls …don’t waste your money
Pace of play
Almost a 3 hour front 9 on Saturday afternoon. Pulled up to hole #6 and there was 4 groups on the hole, not a ranger in site to move the slower group(s) along. Next 4 holes took 1:30 and we left after 9 holes.
US OPEN LIKE CONDITIONS
Did not like the ridiculously thick rough. They had fairways and extremely thick grass rough. No 2nd cut ; just fairway or impossibly thick grass for a 10-12 handicapper.
Greens were great.
Waste of time
It doesn't matter when you make your tee time. You can go out as soon as you check in. There's no Marshall to check slow players so my round took 3 and 1/2 hours to play 10 holes. It was a complete waste of time, I would Wait 10 minutes to tee off to then get to my ball and wait 15 minutes to hit my second shot. The group in front of us took 10 minutes to look for the ball that they lost in the woods only to come out of the woods and drop a ball on the fairway and hit.
Fever Dream - Good hot dog though
We checked in 40min early to go to the range before we play…that didn’t happen. Pro Shop guy charged my card twice, even after I showed him my receipt he said I didn’t pay. What??? … STILL tee’d off late because course was overcrowded. Some tee boxes were just awful. Only reason why this is 3 stars is because the hot dog was very good.
Also why do I need to give you my ID to take a golf cart? Hold on let me cross the Verrazano going 25 in my stolen gas cart. Pointless.
I know it’s early in season but really slow greens compared with everywhere else and ur probably going to rework all the bunkers cause they need them .course is looking fine but needs more care and rough needs cutting . Whew .. most guys aren’t in the pga player condition also just include cart fee in price. Such BS 40 dollars for cart even for real seniors
Good golf
When we got there, it was pouring. The staff guy told us there would be no rain check if we signed in and played. He said the greens are not underwater. I don’t blame him, but they should’ve had somebody out on the course. Checking the greens to tell us that everything was underwater.
Considered Best Public NYC Course
Very good NYC public that is one of my favorites. Great hilly layout, good mixture of hikes and fun quirky greens.
general course overview
fairways pretty good, sand traps horrible and no rakes, greens need to be cleaned off and rolled you need your driver to make the ball go anywhere, no water on the course. Has potential needs tlc
Really needs work
I have played this course weekly for the last 10 years. It made a comeback in condition a few years ago, but for the last 2-3 years has gotten worse. It has new management as of this season, but I see very little improvement except for new carts and new mats at driving range. Especially bad are the tee boxes and traps. Many of the tee boxes are a mixture of grass, dirt, and weeds. I notice that a good number of the forward tees are bare and it is only May. The sand traps are like cement and filled with crevices, footprints, and stones. There is not a rake to be seen anywhere on the course. The water coolers and ball washers don’t have any water in them, so they are unusable. The greens were aerated a couple of weeks ago and are taking a long time to come back. Right now most putts are guesswork. Overall I’m disappointed in the course condition this early in the season. Greens fees were raised but the course really isn’t showing improvement.
