Maui beaches! Photo submitted by u000005546095 on 02/17/2013
Municipal Course at a resort price
Course is average, service is very average. Not even close to being worth $140 before noon. Do yourself a favour. Drive to Kahili or Maui Lani and pay 95 bucks. Take the $45 per player you saved and have a nice dinner.
Poor service
Unfriendly staff and appalling slow pace of play. Our tee time was 1:50 and we finished 13 holes with 15 min to return carts to clubhouse.
Nice, except for...
The bunkers! It looked like it had been days since they had been raked.
Next time I will skip this course!
First my issues: had to unload and pack my own bag to and from cart. Next there was no water provided as the online reservation stated. The course claims they told golfnow they don’t give out water. The range balls are additional and you must hit off the oldest worst mats I’ve seen in years. There are no Marshall’s on course to deal with slow groups or the tourists wandering about. The positive: nice starters, scenic views, interesting holes, decent conditions.
Slow pace of play
Frustrating for the etiquette-conscious golfer, despite being among Maui's more expensive courses. We were delayed on the 1st tee waiting for the other twosome who showed up late. The girlfriend in the twosome had only just started learning to golf. Despite the published dress code, the pro shop allowed her on to the course wearing cutoff jean shorts and a t-shirt. Not once did a marshall show up to tell us to speed up the pace of play, which we desparately hoped would happen. Ended up racing to finish our round before dark, and this is not a long course. Otherwise the pro shop and practice areas were well organized and staffed. We just wish that golf etiquette, specifically keeping up with the group ahead, could be more strictly enforced.
Worth Playing
Course is more challenging than expected, but still fun to play even for higher handicappers. Course was in good condition and is fair price at about $100-150. Not sure I would pay more than that given the other options available at the higher price point. It can be busy and pace of play can be an issue, but you are in Hawaii so things could be worse......Definitely one of the more enjoyable courses on Maui. I recommend it.
Very Pleasant
This was a very nice course to play. The layout itself is not spectacular but it does have its share of beautiful holes overlooking the ocean. The greens were in immaculate condition. However, to putt well, one needs to pay very close attention to the grain of the grass. If you are looking for a challenging course, or just to have some fun this course is right for you.
Joggers Beware
There were quite a few joggers on the course which is rather unsettling.I was surprised that management left them on the course. It looks to me that could be a rather serious liability. We had a lot of rain in Maui prior to playing so it was cartpath only which gave us a lot of exercise with the course was in excellent shape and the staff is wonderful
Tropical resort golf
I live in OR so that is my frame of reference. The course is a little shabby but not enough to complain about. The sand in the few bunkers I experienced was good. The greens are really slow; never did figure out the speed. The staff is efficient and friendly. I started right behind a big ladies' shotgun group, expecting slow play, but the pace was great. A little spendy, but hey, it's Hawaii. It was a pleasant experience.
Nice course, pleasant experience
Not sure why there are grumpy negative reviews posted recently. I was met by friendly, helpful staff. Helped me with loading clubs and asked to be of any other assistance. Played at 1:00 with twilight rates. Threesome finished in 3.75 hours. Wished it would have taken longer just to enjoy the immaculate fairways and perfect greens. Have played the Royal course several times and it is always pleasing. Kai course can be in a little rough shape at times which is why I pay a bit more to enjoy the better conditions of the Royal side. Can’t wait to come back.
Mahalo for the great review and we hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic views
Pro’s:
Nice fairways. Tricky greens. Beautiful views. Very friendly, helpful staff.
Con’s:
Bunkers in rough shape.
Several blind shots.
Course is a little overpriced. I played it as a treat to myself.
Very Enjoyable
Nice course. Very wide open. Green are very good. Great for beginners and intermediate players. I see some have complained about the price but it's on par with other courses in Maui. I stayed at the Westin Maui Resort and found this course very convenient. Outstanding Pro Shop!!!
When two of us arrived 25 minutes before our tee time the clubs were 'yanked' out of our hands and put on a cart. We were 'encouraged' to tee off immediately even though we wanted to hit a few balls on the range. The initial experience felt rushed and rude, until I expressed my dissatisfaction to another staff member who did his best to calm the situation and direct us upstairs to check in and pay. I subsequently had a horrible round and this was topped up by the original attendant putting away the refresher towels when he noticed it was us finishing our round. Very poor and he also had a sarcastic chuckle just to rub it in!!! Extremely unhappy customer.
Never again
I guess we are spoilt as we play most of our golf in the Palm Springs area where there is a lot of choice and always good value, good golf to be had but my experience at the Royal was poor and I will not play it again.
That is quite an achievement for one of the prettiest courses I have ever played but to end up spending a lot of money and end up behind two 5 balls is just not good enough.
I spoke to the guys who service the cart who said the 5 balls play every week and that I should take it up in the pro shop. I did and they said that it was the Seniors skins game and that they are supposed to move on pretty quickly - they did not and frankly any course that allows a 5 ball is not a golf course and is not somewhere I would be willing to visit again.
Snow
It's not same course I played 3years ago it seems run down honey buckets on the course fairways greens not in good shapes.
Too many other courses to choose from!
I have played this course many times in the past. This is now the most run down course in the area. When you can play one of the Kapalua courses or make the drive to Wailea (for the gold or emerald courses for the same price and in WAY better condition), there is no reason to settle for Ka'anapali Kai. If you must stick around the Ka'anapali area, play the Ka'anapali Royal course, which is in far better shape than this course, and a better track with better scenery.
Expected more
I was just expecting more for the money as this was my other choice for my 2 days of playing golf in Maui. Earlier in the week, it was Wailea Emerald and there is no comparison between the two.
From the time you arrived here, it seemed like you were on your own to kinda figure it out. The only friendly member that we came in contact with was the pro shop staff. Other than that, range person and starter could have been a little more friendly. There a big contingent of locals teeing off on Royal and most of their focus was on them.
We were able to start a little earlier than our tee time , but our cart was really hesitant on the first hole, but finally kicked in and kept us going the rest of the round.
The course itself, is quite friendly with wide fairways. A few good views, greens protected by traps. The greens were inconsistent with speed of the putts.
Once we passed the twosome ahead of us, we played in 3 hours, so pace of play was fantastic.
After we finished the round, at 230.. not a sole around to assist with clubs or anything and at a resort course, that is expected.
Mahalo for playing with us and glad you loved the greens conditions! Hope to see you again soon.
