Golfer Reviews
Fun course to play
The course was in the best condition that I can remember playing. Both the Fairways and Greens were good. It was a very nice day playing.
Great experience, great staff, good conditions
3+ weeks out of over-seeding, the course was in really good shape, great/fun staff, beautiful views of the local mountains, perfect weather; but lacked maps of holes (so we were very surprised to see water in places we were unaware of - and couldn't see).
got delayed, then rained out
I like this course, it is a true desert course with small targets, lots of trouble, difficult small greens which are pretty well protected, and lots of elevation change. It is well cared for and the fairways and greens are in good condition. It is an older course with dirt cart paths which make for a bumpy ride. This round was delayed by the need to fix some of the wash outs from heavy rains over the weekend but once out it was a lot of fun. However, an unexpected downpour occured and we needed to abandon our round after 9 holes, no rain check provided.
SO fun
This course was astonishing. So beautiful, tucked away up in Wickenburg. Insane view of the mountain ranges. Grass felt awesome in October. A few degrees cooler than Phoenix.. we'll take that. Though what separated this from most Phoenix golf that we are used to is how deadly the out of bounds areas are. I basically learned that, if it's OB, you're taking a drop. A lot of desert is open and you can at least punch out of the dirt.. but here, you're in the low-to-the-ground brush and not getting that thing out from the branches and low trees. The fairways felt very narrow.. A fun challenge. The par 3's were like 250 yards from the blues and super narrow windows to get there. A ton of the tee boxes are on their own island, so you have to jump a solid 150+ yards to get the fairway, which even then is very narrow at the start, so you better reliably hit far with accuracy, or go up a tee box. A couple holes had the option to fling over the mountains and land in a fairway you couldn't see, that was a super fun risky option!! Play here. It will challenge you (but what do I know, I am not good.)
Lady at check-in was strange and felt the need to tell me what tees to play from despite not knowing my skill level at all. Course was in terrible shape. Tee boxes were literal rough. Impossible to tee the ball up high enough to avoid grass interference unless you had maybe a 5 inch tee. They tout the quality of the greens, but were beyond slow. I wouldnt pay $20 to play this course again.
That's a lot to unwrap! So, I will start with the lady at the front desk. Our staff is very good about encouraging first time visitors to play a more forward set of tees, especially on their first visit. The course is "quirky" and sometimes hard to know where to hit the ball. It is also very narrow and people tend to lose a lot of balls, even good players like yourself. We encourage people to play the shorter tees in an effort to keep the round fun and reasonable as far as pace of play. It is not meant to question your manhood.
We opened up from overseed on October 3rd. We had some issues with mowing equipment but figured that for most people in our area, being open was more important than prime season playing conditions. We offered a $65 opening rate that is less than many courses charge in summer months in the Phoenix area. I am guessing, you booked online and paid less than that.
We are disappointed as are you that we did not meet your expectations and hope you provide us with another chance later in the season as conditions will assuredly be better. Fortunately, many of our customers have been very happy with the course and perhaps a little more understanding.
Thank you for the review and rating! We look forward to your next visit when course conditions are further along from overseed.
It’s going to be great
First of all, it just reopened from overseeding, however, I have no understanding as to why they had not cut down the tee boxes. They were as wild as the rough, and it was difficult to get a good tee shot off most of the time. The Course layout was a bit wild at times and they did warn me about it at the beginning, but I did not fully grasp how crazy it was going to be until I saw it. For a person who had never played the course before there was no way of knowing where I was supposed to hit the ball at times.
Thank you for the rating and review!
We had an issue with our tee mower and we were not able to cut grass on the tees for a couple of days. We also have fewer pieces of equipment than other courses due to budgetary limitations. When we were finally able to cut the tees, we had to be careful not to cut too much of the grass off as that is not healthy for it, especially new grass just out of overseed. We have slowly worked the mow height down to a manageable level but it was painstakingly slow. Having perfect weather for growing grass made it harder as well.
The staff normally tries to provide new golfers to the course with yardage guides. These help with getting around the course. If you did not get one of those, please accept our apologies. We also have a link on our cart signs to hole by hole flyovers but if you were not aware of that, you may not have seen it. It is a challenging and sometime quirky golf course and we hope you enjoyed it enough to give us a try again in the future.
Thank you for the rating/review! I am not sure we are quite at a 5-star rating as we just came out of overseed but we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your round with us.
Really nice very challenging
You do not want to miss the fairway at this place. This is true Desert, Golf the fairways and greens were in beautiful condition. However, on the tee boxes the grass was about 3 inches long and was interfering with the face of my driver. I know this was the first day that they opened after overseeding and I would expect that they will be chopping the tee boxes down any time. Also no beverage cart for snacks and sodas but they do offer several snack items and drink options in the Pro Shop and provide ice for the coolers on the golf carts. Overall, we had a lot of fun and a lot of swearing and lost a lot of golf balls if you are a beginner, you don’t want to play here, but I will be returning.
Thank you for the rating/review! It is desert golf on steroids. Beginners would benefit from playing the shorter red tees and fortunately the shorter length of the course doesn't require the use of a driver to have reasonable shots at most of the greens. One kind of has to think their way around our course.
We are happy to hear you enjoyed your round. The tee boxes have been lowered significantly since you played. We had mower issues and perfect weather to grow grass. We look forward to seeing you again!
Hot in Wickenburg
The course has a great & challenging layout! Numerous dog legs & definitely makes you use different clubs from your bag! Make sure to pay close attention to where the hole is and where to put your first shot. Really friendly staff along with fairways that are in decent shape and greens that are very nice, especially for the hot summer!!
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and rating! The greens are in very good condition and hopefully that makes up for some difficult conditions in the fairway right now.
We look forward to future visits!
Tee boxes & fairways are in bad shape. Green’s might be the best in the valley. If you don’t mind rolling your ball in the fairway than it’s worth the money
Unfortunately that is a fair assessment. The fairways are especially sketchy right now. We need a couple of good rains!
The greens certainly make up for a lot of ills. They are very good right now!
Great track
Like I said great track very tight. Only use driver on three holes. Awesome views greens were in great shape true smooth and a decent speed. Overall, I recommend recommended.
Thank you for the review and rating! The greens are certainly a bright spot this summer.
Course is in great condition
They have obviously taken great pride in caring for the course. In was in the best condition I've found it in the last 3 years. The greens were very fast but rolled true. Good sand in the traps, very playable. This is a tough course, target golf, accuracy is important so having the course in great condition helps.
We have been blessed with perfect weather for this past winter golf season! The course is in as good of condition as it has most likely ever been. Thank you for the great rating and review! We hope it encourages others to come out and see us.
Amazing Value
Yes it is a bit of a drive, but it is well worth it. No people hounding you, cool little layout with absolutely incredible greens. The food is spectacular and very reasonable.
Thank you for the very kind rating and review! It has been a good year for us. We are looking forward to more of the same through the summer.
Will not go back
This was over 50 miles to get there. When we arrived and I entered the Pro Shop, the guy behind the counter just looked at me, said nothing. He told me where to find the driving range. Said nothing about getting balls. Went to range, no balls, so returned to Pro Shop. Man was sitting outside the shop smoking a cigarette and sitting in a cart. When I asked about balls, he said he would have to get them for me. Overall, this person ruined any chance of enjoying the round. Course is narrow with many blind shots.
We are sorry this happened to you and that it ruined your round. We will address this with the employee.
The rest of the staff is super friendly and it is unfortunate that you were not here when they were working.
The course is very narrow but when played as it is designed, there are only a couple of true blind shots if you are playing from the blue tees. It does require precision and doesn't benefit the longer hitters other than they are laying up with a shorter, more accurate club.
We hope you change your mind about not playing here again. Having knowledge of the course can lead to some really rewarding shots and scores after a couple of times around.
Wickenburg CC
The Fairways and Greens are in good condition. The tee boxes are a challenge as sometimes it is difficult to find a level starting position. Picking the right club is important in order to get a good score.
Thank you for the rating and review! The tee boxes are an issue that we have been working on ... slowly. Each summer we work on 5 to 10 and hope to do the same this summer. Hopefully you will notice a difference on your next visit!
Thank you for the review and rating! The rain was certainly a downer that day and made a mess of the clean up efforts that were performed before. Did you ask about a rain check after coming in? We had other groups that came in and we made arrangements to compensate them for the holes they were not able to play when they asked. If you contact us, we can make arrangements to give you a 9-hole rate the next time you come up to play 18 holes.
