Bull Run Golf Club
About
Situated in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, Bull Run Golf Club has a beautiful woodland setting that is conveniently located just minutes from many historic Civil War sites. The course plays through mature forests and across lush, grassy meadows. There are also several ponds that come into play throughout. The expansive layout covers over 450 acres, allowing plenty of room for the native flora and fauna. The risk-reward layout has plenty of challenges for more daring hitters but it also offers wide fairways that are molded to steer the ball towards the center. The landing areas are generous but they are often framed by grassy hollows, bunkers, or mature trees. Bull Run is challenging, but playable, which is why the club is considered one of the best golf courses in the D.C. area.

Poor turf management
Rough was filled with weeds, don't recall a tee box that was either flat or properly mowed grass that wasn't full of weeds. Didn't get a roll on a single drive, several plugged deeply into the fairway, zero roll, most bounced backwards. Beautiful course, but a little weed, water and turf management would go a long way.
Great Morning Round
The good: excellent layout, a lot of forced carries (which I like), generous fairways, good green conditions, solid clubhouse, great putting area
The not so good: the rough was almost too penal and needed to be cut, mats on driving range were uneven and beat up, slightly overpriced (par for the course in Northern VA/Maryland)
Will come back to this course again.
No Bull!
Bull Run is (for my money) the best public course in the NOVA area. Course is well taken care of and the layout provides a good challenge.
Beautiful course
This course is in my backyard and this was the first time that I played there. The staff was great, but I loved the course. It wasn't a difficult course, but their greens are challenging and they have interesting pin placement that added some extra zeal. I will say it would be nice to have a more efficient food and snack grab on the turn to grab a snack or a bite or a drink. A few more quick grab options in the grille with an easier checkout would be beneficial to both the golfer and the grill.
Course in great shape
I have always loved this layout, and right now it’s in as good condition as I have seen it. Staff was super friendly.
Greta course
Course was straight forward. Beautiful scenery and just challenging enough to not be boring but not hard to make frustrating. Laid back staff, but things in place. My favorite in the area.
Interesting layout, and very playable.
Great course layout in pretty good shape. Homes are not many and well set back, not a distraction.
Course was in excellent shape
Greens rolled true and had no bad spots. Fairways and tee boxes were in great shape. Although it rained during the first holes, the course drained well and had no standing water.
Bull Run
I was in town for work and had the opportunity to play Bull Run Golf Club, and I’m really glad I made the time.
The first thing that stood out was how wide open the course feels. The fairways are generous, which gives you some added forgiveness off the tee—especially helpful if you’re not totally dialed in. That said, it’s not a pushover. If you do miss the fairway, the rough can be pretty punishing, so there’s definitely a premium on keeping it in play.
The property itself is beautiful, with a peaceful, secluded feel that makes it easy to forget you’re just outside the D.C. area. Conditions were solid overall, and the greens rolled well, rewarding good putts.
One thing to note—it’s not cheap. But for the overall experience, course layout, and conditions, it feels like you’re getting a quality round for the price.
What I appreciated most is that Bull Run strikes a nice balance—it’s playable and enjoyable for a wide range of skill levels, but still offers enough challenge to keep better players engaged.
If you’re traveling through the area or looking for a quality public course in Northern Virginia, Bull Run is definitely worth a round.
Surprised
I had played here before and was a little surprised in the course condition. Some of the fairways were ultra soggy so even when you hit a good shot off the tee, your footing was questionable and I felt like I chunked a bunch of my irons because it was so soggy. The other thing was the rough was crazy high and really needed a cut. If you ended up hitting in the rough, it was an adventure to even find your ball.
I’ll play here again but I hope next time the course is in better condition.
