Balcones Country Club - Balcones Course

This feels like someone squeezed a golf course in between houses. The design seems less like thoughtful design and more like some guy squeezed in some holes between houses. No function or rhythm to layout its just trees and houses everywhere, some tight fairways, and small greens. It's surprisingly a private course but it feels like a muni. In fact I like the munis better so it felt worse than a muni. It felt like a guy squeezed a random golf course in between houses.

I was a member for 2 and a half years and had a good experience while I was actively using the club. Unfortunately, the way they handle cancellations completely overshadowed that.

After moving out of the area, I canceled my membership four days after being billed in December. Despite not living nearby or being able to use the club, they required 60 days’ notice and continued charging full dues for two additional months. No flexibility. No prorating. No understanding.

When I spoke with Rachel King about it, she was dismissive and simply repeated the policy over and over instead of addressing the issue or showing any willingness to work with me. It felt intentionally rigid and callous.

If you’re considering joining, just be aware that leaving may not be handled with the same hospitality they show when signing you up.

This course is certainly not worth the money that is requested. It's not that its a bad course, its just way overpriced.

The fairways aren't in shape, the greens were not in shape, and the bunkers were practically dirt instead of sand.

I don't think I will go back.

This is an older course that's flipped back and forth between being public and private. Being on the north side of town it's certainly easy enough to access. Bunkers can be on the hard/firm side at times, but the greens aren't too hard to putt. The front nine is pretty straight forward and flat. The back nine takes a different turn ... literally ... and incorporates a little more elevation change along with becoming a bit more narrow. I certainly prefer it during the spring and early summer before the drought dries it up.

When this course was open (currently closed due to lack of funding, irrigation issues, etc), it was often a good value on GolfNow. With their watering issues, it could get a bit dry during the hotter months. And it had a couple of interesting holes where elevation change and blind shots to the green could really affect your score. But all in all, we generally enjoyed our time on the course. If and when it's 'alive' again, we'll go back.
