Crystal Woods Golf Club
About
Crystal Woods Golf Club dates back to the 1950s when it was opened as a nine-hole, par-37 course called Bit O’ Heather Golf Club, which it was known as until 1967 when the course was renamed and completely redesigned, which included the addition of another nine. The par-72 course that exists today tumbles across a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. The golf course is mostly wide open, putting it at the mercy of the prevailing winds. On particularly blustery days, Crystal Woods Golf Club is quite demanding. The 12th is the course’s signature and it even has a reputation for being the most difficult hole in McHenry County. It’s tempting to be distracted by the beautiful view from the elevated tee but this tough hole requires your full attention. The double-tiered green rises dramatically from front to back, often demanding three or more putts.

Very enjoyable Course
This is not a very long course (6500+ from tips), but the greens and fairways were in great shape. Traps were so so, but there has been a lot of rain lately, so this was to be expected. The staff was friendly both in the clubhouse and at the bar. Has a range (no drivers) and a wonderful putting practice area. There are some great holes, with #12 being the most demanding. There are several elevation changes which makes for some very pretty holes. This course is well worth playing.
Like the overall layout of the course
This was a last minute find and we really enjoyed the course. There were some very interesting holes that were challenging.
Rain delay
1:57 tee time. We reviewed radar for the area before heading to the course. Nothing visible on radar. We got there about 1:35. They would not let us get a cart, threatening weather in the vicinity. About 2:30 we tee off. Finished 4 holes when the sirens went off. We waited until 4:10 to get back on the course. Obviously the staff have their protocol. It was just a very frustrating day. Staff was by the book.
Great Course, Great People, and a Few Ways to Lose a Golf Ball 😂
Crystal Woods Golf Club is one of those courses that just feels comfortable from the moment you pull in. The staff is incredibly friendly, always willing to chat, joke around, and make you feel welcome. It has a real old-school neighborhood feel to it, and the clubhouse even has that neighborhood-pub vibe—which I absolutely love.
The course itself is a lot of fun and will definitely make you think. The par 3s range from about 110 to 200 yards, and the par 5s can have doglegs, water, elevation changes, and plenty of sand traps just waiting for you to make a questionable decision. 😂
If you have a slice, the front nine may test your patience a little, but the back nine gives you plenty of chances to recover and pretend you had a plan all along.
Pace of play can be a little slow at times because the course is understandably popular with the nearby residents, but that’s a pretty good problem to have when you’re playing a course people clearly enjoy.
They also have a really nice chipping and putting area and a driving range, so you can actually warm up properly before going out there to embarrass yourself on the first tee. And the price is very reasonable.
Overall, Crystal Woods is a fun, challenging, and welcoming course with a great local feel. I had a great time and will definitely be back!
Pro shop scheduled us at 1:57pm and a league at 2pm. The 2 pm league was trying to tee off at 1:55pm ahead of us. They were supposed to tee off on the back 9.
Great Layout, Not-So-Great Fairways
This course is much fun to play with doglegs, elevation changes, distance varieties and challenging greens. I'm hoping that the rough fairway conditions are not indicative of a rumor that the facility will be sold to developers
