Pace of play is an issue... for the amount of money that you pay a ranger should be on the course.... plus the sand traps are horrible
The decline and fall of a once great golf course
This course was once a must play in the New York City metro area. Its layout is still amongst the finest public facilities you will find and can, when it's in great shape, rival the finest private courses. But unfortunately it is rarely great shape.
Management of the course as always been a problem but over the last couple of seasons it's gotten way worse. I just don't know what they're doing there. The greens are inconsistent at best. Sometimes they're slow sometimes they're (relatively) fast. Sometimes some are slow and some are fast on the same day. The course needs management that cares enough to put some revenue back into the whole facility. The clubhouse is a joke and needs to be torn down and replaced with a modern golf clubhouse. And the upkeep of the course itself has declined so much over the years. The sand traps are more like just dirt pits that have long since lost whatever sand they had in them.
Also, for reasons beyond any comprehension, management completely removed ALL of the ball washers from the course. Prepare to play a muddy ball around the course (or prepare a carry around muddy wet towel that gets more disgusting each and every time you use it) because there isn't a single ball washer.
And then there are the water coolers. Sometimes they're there and oftentimes they're not. And, when you can find one, it's a crapshoot over whether the water is fresh and cold or warm from sitting around overnight. But that's not the worst of it because on almost every single water cooler there appears to be toxic black mold forming around the spigot. My advice is to carry around your own supply of clean water. I mean this is course management 101. Don't sicken the golfers on the golf course by being so extraordinarily cheap that you can't replace the water coolers annually (at least once every two years).
And, finally, the number of dead trees lining the course make it a danger to play. Around almost every hole there are LARGE trees that are completely dead with branches that fall off during storms. It's only matter of time before someone gets badly hurt by a large falling limb that breaks off at an inopportune moment (and the lawsuit that would follow).
I sincerely hope they clean up their act because as much as I've loved playing this course over the years other public facilities have bypassed Spook Rock by a lot. There are courses around that offer much more value for your money.
Solid If You Are Near the Area
Played Spook Rock Golf Course recently and the layout really stood out—fun design with a nice mix of challenge and variety hole to hole. The course was in solid shape overall.
Pace of play was the biggest downside. I went out as a single and ran into multiple groups lacking pace of play etiquette and which slowed things down quite a bit. I ended up having to ask to play through multiple times.
If you are short on time focus on the with a back nine. Staff is great, nice pro shop and food.
Overall, a fun track with a lot to like.
Spook Rock
Nice course challenging but fair and in good shape for March..Pro Shop were very nice and helpful would play again.
Cold and Windy in early March
Decent round. Course is in decent shape considering the snow we just had. Wet in some spots but overall pretty good. Greens were much better than I expected. Bunkers and t boxes were ok. Bit easier of a round without leaves on the trees but the wind and cold made it a high scoring day.
Worth a Visit
Had a great time at Spook Rock, I was in a foursome with 3 other regulars. The vibes at the club were great, people were greeting each other, it felt like a close knit group. Rates were reasonable, the grounds are well maintained, and the layout is varied, interesting, yet not overly punishing. I would happily go again.
Impressive
A very reasonable price for a course that makes you feel like you paid $100+. Great condition, laid back feel, range, putting green, bar - everything you’d want in a course!
Nice course… with a few issues…
Greens were in poor conditions - air raided recently…
Pace f play was really slow, 4:50 min round!? Otherwise, liked the course and layout, friendly staff.
Molasses pace of play
Started at 12:10 in a foursome
On the second hole. A twosome was playing in front of us. When I asked what their tee time was, that couldn’t remember- what? On the third tee box I could see four groups on the hole. I called the pro shop to ask for a ranger. He showed up and said he would remove the twosome. Pace of play did not improve.
Left after 13 holes when we were at 3 hours 45 minutes
Very Disappointed
Aerated greens in the middle of August. for 90 bucks on a Tuesday afternoon is an absolute joke. Bunkers dried out, grass around the greens way too high. Total waste of money
Disappointed at course conditions
First time I played the course this season. I’ve liked the course a lot in the past, but found the course conditions way less than optimal. Sand traps resemble stone roads in a third-world country and all need to be rehabbed. Cart paths are totally beaten up and need repaving. Greens are recently aerated, but should improve in a couple,of weeks, at which point my rating for the course would go from “poor” to “fair.” This is a course that could easily merit a four star rating with some TLC.
Nice Muni
Nice course in very good condition. Very playable layout and worth the ride up here from the city. I will definitely be back and will bring my posse with me ;)
Good conditions
Great course because I shot my best round there and also holed out and dunked it in
