Hybrids are as popular as ever. Their forgiveness and high launch enamor golfers of all skill levels. Fred Couples currently has 3 hybrids in his bag including a 6-hybrid! The benefits over long irons are obvious, but their usefulness doesn’t stop at long approach shots.
Next time you’re on the course facing a tough shot near the green, it might be wise to ask yourself, “Could I use a hybrid here?” (especially on long chip shots). The hybrid bump and run is a shot most people know about, but not many golfers consistently use it or try it more than a few times. Luckily, GolfPass instructors are here to help teach the when and how of the hybrid bump and run.
1. Bump and Run Hybrid
Andrew Rice teaches the fundamentals of hitting the hybrid around the green, including some valuable details about how close to the putting surface you should be and what part of the clubface you should try to hit the ball with.

2. Options Around the Green
Martin Hall covers the hybrid chip as one of the many great options around the green in this episode from Breaking 90. He also goes into detail about a few other shot types and the process of choosing what shot to hit. The smaller the variance of outcome for a shot the better. Using this to choose what shot to play will help save strokes over time.
3. When and How to Chip with a Hybrid
Aimee Cho provides some nice insight into what situations around the green benefit most from using the hybrid. Tight lies, larger greens and gentle upslopes between the ball and the green are ideal.
4. Chipping Lesson 8 – Hybrids
You might be hesitant to use the hybrid off the green because you are more familiar with the Texas wedge (aka putter). Martin covers the reasons why a hybrid, with its 15 degrees or more of loft, is a far superior choice than the flat stick for certain shots.
5. Hybrid Chips from the Rough
Is a hybrid from the rough a viable option? Jim McLean believes in certain scenarios it is the safest, most reliable choice. If your lie is so-so and you have plenty of green to work with it, give it a try.
