SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- In March, Jason Scott Deegan reported on Robinson Ranch reopening after an extensive renovation following wildfire damage.
Now, there is new news to report at this club 25 miles north of Los Angeles: Robinson Ranch has a new name, Sand Canyon Country Club, and a new hotel is planned onsite.
Currently, 18 of the original 36 holes are open. Surrounded by the Angeles National Forest, a recent wildfire and drought ravaged the courses at Robinson Ranch in the past year, but the Valley Course reopened this spring as crews work to restore and renovate that 18 holes. The blessing from the fire is that it opened up the back nine of the Valley, which looks remarkably different than before. Both nines, although they are in good shape, continue to receive renovation work that includes rebuilt water features and ponds around the greens and fairways, including the picturesque ninth hole.
Instead of 36 holes, long-range plans call for the facility to have 27, which will be called the Valley, Desert and Mountain nines. A new hotel is planned for the property, which will give the facility, which is also a wedding and events venue, an on-site resort component.
The hotel, which should open sometime in the next year if all goes as planned, will be near where the 11th hole is on the Mountain Course. The back nine of the Mountain will be permanently closed, but new practice facilities are being planned for that area as well.
The Valley Course, which like the Mountain Course is designed by Ted Robinson, opened in March, about eight months after infamous Sand Fire torched 3,300 acres of the surrounding Angeles National Forest in July 2016.
SoCal golfers should take note that while there is still work ongoing at Sand Canyon, you can get a great deal to play the renovated Valley course. A grand opening special is currently taking place that is $45 weekdays/$55 weekends.
