Crystal Springs Golf Club
About
Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg touts a reputation of being not only the most challenging golf course in New Jersey, but also one of the most challenging layouts east of the Mississippi. The site filled with water after its use as a limestone quarry in 1929, which formed the natural springs on the 10th hole that the course is named after. The layout is definitely a shot-maker's course. Carefully sculpted mounding that frames the fairways and greens defines each hole. There is also tall and gnarly rough treacherously guarding the tight fairways. The golf course sits just a few miles from New Jersey's highest point, sprawling across an undulating terrain that makes it difficult to find an even lie. One of the most notably difficult, and subsequently the most talked about, holes is the 11th. The hole is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Windsor Quarry.

Draconian
Way too difficult for average golfer. Many greens and fairways bordering on unfair. Very little bailouts what seems like a perfect shot ends up in hazards or worse-lost. Not for a casual resort player.
Wet Hot and Humid Challenge
I've played here quite a few times. It is a target type course. Most holes are narrow with little margin for error in drives. Course layout is interesting. Quite a few blind shot holes where the pin is not visible until you're within 150yds. It was a wet and humid day and lost quite a few balls. Tough and challenging course but in very good shape.
Difficut course for the average golfer
I play this course only 1-2 times a year. You hardly ever have a flat lie, 5hr rounds on the weekend. Staff is friendly It is an unusual layout I seldom lose a ball on a course, I usually lose 3 or4 and I am a very consistent golfer who plays a 100 rounds of golf a year and have a 9 handicap
Ok
Extremely tough layouts. Course was wet and greens were slow. Not sure worth driving 1.5-2 hr from most of the places to play
Excellent course
Most valuable course I ever played..
Beautiful layouts, excellent conditions
Very challengeable
Course is great / scheduling not so much
Had two groups of four schedule via golfnow with back to back tee times. Earlier group got bumped because of 'scheduling issues' -- 2 days after the tee time was booked!! We kept the 2nd tee time and found the group in front of us were playing a 'membership tournament'. We didn't tee off until 8am (supposed to go off at 7:30) and we finished at 1pm. Twice the group in front of us couldn't find their tee shots, after a good ten minutes looking for it, that they came back to the tee box (the black), and tee'd off again. I like playing this course very much but golfnow scheduling lately has been very poor. This is the third time in two months that I've had an issue with booking a time at the same time someone else does and get bumped.
Great course if you’re good
This course is difficult, very difficult
It takes some getting familiar with. Once you do I find it’s a great challenge for your game.
Some bunkers are crap and need more sand, some tee boxes are seriously sloped and need leveling
Otherwise great course, (if you’re good)
Tough but great
Great course but you better be on the faiwarways or your in for long day. . Even fairways are tough as full of undulations and mogels. Good luck and love signature 11th!
A very difficult course
If you are a single digit golfer or alternatively, you want to score 10 strokes (or more) higher than you usually do, play this course. It is very pretty but too challenging for the average golfer and let's face it, most of us are average :-)
If you play and shoot your handicap, you will be very proud of your accomplishment.
Ungelation
The course has up shots and down hill shots and that's in the fairway. But the elevation changes are awesome to. If ur a shot maker just will enjoy.
Over the top ranger
Great course ... front desk staff were super friendly and accommodating... however the ranger was super over the top on going purely off the sheet of paper time range as to where you should be at what time and what hole ... not taking into account that the group behind us were a group of ladies teeing it up from the ladies tees so they are always going to be up on his at any point especially on the par 3s. Love the course but the rangers need to evaluate the realtime pace of play and less on what a sheet is telling them. Took us about 4hrs and 20mins.
There's a difference between challenging and unfair
I've played all the courses at crystal springs resort. Unless you're playing ballyowen you're really not getting anything too special. Back to Crystal; the course has tight winding fairways. This is fine except mounds and patches of rough randomly protrude out. Good shot, especially off the tee, can be penalized unjustly. There's barely any grass on the fairways, so wet conditions turn into a mud ball fiesta. The greens are well kept but can get slow and sometimes inconsistent. The thing that bothers me most is the teeboxes. I've played the white and the blue tees and consistently had an awkward lopsided stance with the ball well above my feet..and I'm not being picky I'm talking about the entire box. The traps flood easily so playing there after a previous night downpour is a mistake. Lastly, if you play on a weekend you're garunteed a steady slow round. The 10 minute ride between holes is actually a blessing in disguise or else you'd more easily realize you're waiting 15 minutes on most boxes.
It still has the scenic par 3s, and the allure of being the most challenging public course in NJ. If you're a glutton for punishment, a skilled player, and playing on a sunny weekday than Crystal is an option. Really one of those 'play it to say you played it' courses. Cough up the extra $30 and go over to Ballyowen..you won't be dissapointed.
