Crystal Springs Golf Club
About
Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg touts a reputation of being not only the most challenging golf course in New Jersey, but also one of the most challenging layouts east of the Mississippi. The site filled with water after its use as a limestone quarry in 1929, which formed the natural springs on the 10th hole that the course is named after. The layout is definitely a shot-maker's course. Carefully sculpted mounding that frames the fairways and greens defines each hole. There is also tall and gnarly rough treacherously guarding the tight fairways. The golf course sits just a few miles from New Jersey's highest point, sprawling across an undulating terrain that makes it difficult to find an even lie. One of the most notably difficult, and subsequently the most talked about, holes is the 11th. The hole is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Windsor Quarry.

Tank
Course wasn't the best when we played. The green was Sandy and bumpy. I will play there again in few month.
Challenging, Hilly Course
This is my third time playing Crystal Springs. It doesn't get easier. Long, hilly course with a lot of great views. Drives have to be perfect in order to have a flat lie. Good luck.
Spectacular 11th Hole (Classic 2)
The 11th hole is their signature hole on this course which is an elevated par 3. It is worth the greens fee alone!
The course is in good condition after a long winter. All of the greens were just aerated and some tee boxes need seed. However, the fairways are in excellent conditions and the traps have a powdery sand. The staff are overall very friendly,
Early in the season
It was great to play golf after the winter we had. Crystal Springs always is worth it.
Windy Crystal
It is early in the year, the course was wet from all of the recent rain. That meant it was cart path only. It was also extremely windy. Given the amount of out-of-bounds there is, it became quite challenging. The course was in very good shape, the greens were running true and reasonably quickly.
Good but not great
Played this past Saturday. Was very early in the season and was surprised how good of shape the course was in because of this. Decent course but some very stupid holes...my one issue was the pace. We were a twosome that played behind a threesome and it took us 5:15. They never asked us if we wanted to play through, never saw a group in front of them and never saw a ranger. It is what it is but kind of ridiculous..."while we're young"
Very challenging and hilly course. As a result, the pace of play was slow.
I would recommend this course only for the better golfers. The pace of play was slow due to tight fairways and balls rolling into the rough due to dry conditions. Tight course with a lot of uphill approaches and sand.
No reward for a good shot
Crystal Springs is a challenging course in that it requires you to hit good shot after good shot. Even if you hit a great first shot, you are not always rewarded with a great lie. As a result you have to stay sharp and continue to think your way through your round.
The course itself is always in great shape and the greens roll true. However, it is not a course for the meek.
Many people find it too difficult or gimmicky, but any player who values a challenging course with great aesthetic beauty knows that Crystal is one of the finest golf courses Northern NJ has to offer.
I choose to keep my GHIN handicap at Crystal becasue it is a true test of golf and the facilities are top notch. Even if Wild Turkey or Ballyowen have a better reputation for one reason or another, Crystal is the the most challenging and argueably best course in the Crystal Springs family.
Great course - will play again
Course was in great shape. Fairways were fantastic and the greens rolled very true. First time I played at Crystal Springs, definitely not my last.
Very Nice Tough Course
This is a very nice and very challenging course definitely not for beginners. The fairways have lots of mounds and contours and the greens, often tiered, have sand or water short and to the side. The first par 3 on the back nine over the quarry is beautiful and tough. Course was well maintained.
This course was just not for me though. I only pulled the driver out of the bag on two holes of the 18. I can hit my driver long and fairly accurate with a draw. It just seemed that every hole required a shot of 230 - 260 yds off the tee to leave a good 2nd shot in the fairway unless you can really shape your drives. I do however play "smart" rather than try to rip a drive and end up in the rough or OB.
My biggest problem with the course was that it took 5.5 hrs to play 18 holes on a Tuesday afternoon. The foursome in front of us was remarkably slow and this is coming from someone that does not like to rush on the course. There were no rangers checking pace of play and at one point we were on the tee with the next two groups behind us. I would rather play Wild Turkey or Ballyowen in the facility.
tight and hilly
tough track, tight and hilly, a lot of blind shots - bring an extra sleeve ...
Drive it straight
A nicely laid out course in the hills of north Jersey. You will lose balls here if you are not in control off the tee. Approach shots are often very challenging as well to raised and well-protected greens. Conditions were good for October and the entire facility is run with class. Glofnow's $45 rate made it a bargain and I will definitely return.
Wide Variety of Challenges
The course was well maintained and beutiful. It delivered a wide variety of challenges and different scenarios. My only complaint is we were constantly pushed along and rushed, only to wait on the foursome ahead of us. Not a relaxed atmosphere.
Wow
For the price, I don't know of any other course that is as nice as this one. Plays slow, but that's a good thing here, the views are awesome on most holes and every shot presents its own challenges and is different than the last. I think there is seven courses here and I can't wait to try them all, this place is going into my weekend rotation, the value is too good not to. Staff was also very helpful and friendly at every corner.
Shot makers
This course is very well maintained. Greens are in great shape and roll true. The tee to green experience is somewhat contradicting. The fairways are extremely tight and bumpy. Driver is not a smart play on most holes. Tee boxes need to be redone because they are not leveled. Other than that the course is very enjoyable.
Wonderful course, start to finish
First time reviewing a course, 10 handicap player, this course was well maintained, very hard. Great views, staff was very friendly. 4 hour round on a Sunday an hour from NYC is unheard of! I live in the city play everyother weekend and it is by far the best course I have played in the area( BP black included)
This will be my new destination each weekend.
Nice golf escape
Pretty course! Very 'mogully.' Narrow. A couple beautiful par 3's and glimpses of Ballyowen along the course. Was confused at first by the first nine being called Villages, and back nine, Classic, but we figured it out. The Classic 9 had most of its tee boxes covered in sand with aeration holes, but we didnt mind so much. The course was in good condition and the pace was decent. It's a nice place to play golf.
Course has gone downhill
I remember when this course used to be one of the premier courses in the Crystal Springs group of courses. It seems that they have put most of their efforts into Ballyowen and Wild Turkey and let the Crystal Springs course slip.
The greens were aerated, but that was not noted in the Golf. Now listing. They were slow and bumpy.
The tee boxes on the Villages 9 were in bad shape, lots of crab grass and blotchy. Fairway on this 9 were also a little worse for wear. On the Classic 9, both the tee boxes and fairways were in substantially better condition.
Beautifully laid out course with beautiful scenery all around.
The greens had just been aerated which made for a tough round. The tees were in good shape but the fairways showed a lot of disrespect from previous golfers. There was no divot sand/fertilizer container on the golf cart which may have contributed to the fairway condition. The course must be gorgeous in the spring and enjoyable to play. I may go back in a month or so when the greens are in better shape.
This is the most challenging course in Crystal Springs resort in my opinion.
This is the most challenging course in Crystal Springs resort in my opinion.
Narrow and undulating FW, highly undulating tiered greens, island par3, uphill par 5, and etc.
But this course is still so beautiful and well maintained and it was fun to play.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Really? You could only hit driver on 2 holes due to your "length" off of the tee? Which 2 holes? By my estimation if you hit a fairly accurate tee shot with a draw then there are MAYBE 2 or 3 holes that might give you pause with your driver. And that's if I throw in #4. Hole 17 is probably the only hole where you can't hit a long draw unless you have the guts to take it over the trees. If you are as accurate and long as you say, then you could probably drive that green. Other than that and hole #7 another hole that you can cut the corner over the trees and condos, the course sets up well for a long draw. Sounds like you aren't as accurate as you claim to be.
