Crystal Springs Golf Club
About
Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg touts a reputation of being not only the most challenging golf course in New Jersey, but also one of the most challenging layouts east of the Mississippi. The site filled with water after its use as a limestone quarry in 1929, which formed the natural springs on the 10th hole that the course is named after. The layout is definitely a shot-maker's course. Carefully sculpted mounding that frames the fairways and greens defines each hole. There is also tall and gnarly rough treacherously guarding the tight fairways. The golf course sits just a few miles from New Jersey's highest point, sprawling across an undulating terrain that makes it difficult to find an even lie. One of the most notably difficult, and subsequently the most talked about, holes is the 11th. The hole is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Windsor Quarry.

Not what I had expected
It was nice but given the price I thought it would have been nicer. Not particularly good value, I think I would have been better off spending the extra money and going to Wild Turkey.
Challenging, butt relatively open layout.
Played 1st. thing in the morning (6:30 tee time) on a Tuesday. Hardly a soul out there. Was able to whip through the round in about 3 hrs, playing multiple balls & lots of practice shots. Layout is relatively generous with wide fairways and the rough isn't very rough, which is great for a complete hack like me. If your ball does go way off line, there's a lot of dense vegetation that makes recovering your ball difficult- but if you're that far off line, you deserve losing your ball. Lot of interesting shots, particularly a 150 ish yard par three with about a 70' drop. Water here and there, but for the most part is out of play. Place is very well maintained. Greens are in great shape and not too difficult.
Love it or Hate it
You either love it or you hate it here. At least that's how most of my golfing friends feel.
The problem with Crystal Springs is the course is part of a resort where EVERYONE thinks they can go out and play golf. This course can rip even the most seasoned golfer to shreds if you don't bring your A game.
I had the unfortunate situation of my tee time being double booked with the senior women's league. Consequently, I had to endure a front nine of 3 and a half hours. Instead of putting us out in front of the shotgun the staff sent us out behind the league. Even playing a scramble they couldn't manage a sub 3 hour front nine. It was excruciating.
You should have to pass a skills test to be allowed on this course. If you are not a single digit handicapper don't come here. Go play Black Bear or Wild Turkey. You must know how to handle awkward lies in the fairway and rough as well as negotiate tee shots where the landing areas are not always visible. Approaches are generally to tight pins. If you make it to the green be prepared for a roller coaster ride with subtle breaks around the hole locations. Proximity to the hole on approaches is your most important stat for the day. If you break 80 your friends will carry you off the course and shower you in champagne.
Golf Heaven
The late rate at Chrystal is the best value in northern New Jersey. Get there early to enjoy the free range balls and excellent practice areas. The atmosphere is that of a private club, classy service with a smile, everything pristine. They let my wife ride along at no charge—it is a resort after all. With the money you save on green fees you can enjoy Foie Gras and a fabulous glass of wine after the round. If you like, you can wonder downstairs to shower and shave in the country-club-like locker room.
The course itself can be penal if you spray the ball around—just reload and enjoy the many fantastic views and intriguing greens. This is a rare case where the course is actually more beautiful than the pictures on the web site. I have to drive an hour to get there but after repeated exposures to the trashy Jersey attitude at the county courses in my area I just have to get out there every so often experience golf proper again.
P.S. Wild Turkey also launches from there also and is more expensive. Turkey is much more open and quite a bit busier for that reason.
A challenge of golf
This is a tough course, even off the front tees. NOt overly long but a lot of turns, undulations and elevation changes. A heap of fairway mounds also means you wont always have a good lie, even if your tee shot is sound. Greens and fairwats well kept. I wish more people would repair green divots though. If your handicap is more than 15 I'd suggest giving it a miss..
Views alone worth money
First so we know I played at 630 am. Best time to go in my opinion. It's not to hot yet and you have the course to yourself, which gives you time to enjoy the views. Yes there were people working getting course ready for the day but they were very polite and told me of a few places to enjoy a nice view.
The course itself was awesome, few spots where people stink and don't replace divots but the course can't be held accountable for people being lazy. They carried my clubs to the cart and at end of round the wiped my clubs down while asking about my round, i never played a public place like that before. It is a hard course don't get me wrong but I really enjoyed myself and if you ever want to treat yourself to a nice round I suggest this place.
interesting course
The course is very well maintained. It is a very intimidating course for someone new to golf. Alot of tight shots and crazy lies. The whole course has moguls throughout it. It wasn't as fun as expected being I have only played for 4 years and this was my 3rd time going this year, it was a little rough.
Great value for the price I paid
For $70 through GolfNow, you can't go wrong with this course. Great conditions, but a tough course with all the moguls and hills. There are two very nice and scenic par 3's, one was almost like an island green (hole 9) and another one over water and about a 200ft drop. Great views from these two holes and some nice views on a few others as well. I would definitely play this again for this price. Range balls were included as well.
Great Course
This has to be one of my favorite courses. Great view and solid conditions for the most part. Every hole has something different in store. The only thing that keeps me from playing it more is how expensive it is, and will only play it when it is a "Hot Deal". Other than that I look forward to playing again
great facility and a difficult track
great course. you can hit it down the middle and have a terrible lye. forces you to be creative and play good golf. extra fun on a windy day. some of the most beautiful holes in sussex county.
Crystal Springs - 3 May 2014 Afternoon (4 ball)
Got a decent price and played in the afternoon with a bunch of friends. Didn't realized that they had just aerated the greens, so they were not in good shape. Other than that, course was good. A little soggy in areas, but to be expected due to the recent bout of rain.
Another one of those courses where some local knowledge would be very helpful. Some rolling fairways, so difficult to know where to place the ball unless you've played there before.
Once the greens get up to scratch, this place will be great, but of course you'll also have to pay for that.
good but greens poor
Greens had been aerated two weeks ago and it showed as if they had been done yesterday. really lots of holes, bouncy, lumpy, overall very poor condition.
Had rained yesterday so course was basically cart-path only but with handicap flag could go onto fairways but they stated that even then, at all times, cannot go beyond signs on fairways (some of them more than 125 yards from green - ) real problem here at times for the handicapped, unable to fully play without considerable walking or driving beyond the signs) basically not totally legal on treating the handicapped.
Course has a number of narrow fairways and must drive it pretty straight.
Slalom Run
Its an interesting track. Be ready for all kinds of bumps and knobs and such like you'd see in Olympic skiing, except this time in most of the fairways. Several blind shots and uneven lies. Tee boxes need attention, and the greens are hard and very bumpy, still showing scars from earlier aeration (2+weeks ago per the resort web page). Many putts bounced offline from the plug holes. I wouldn't pay full freight for it, but if you can get a hot deal here for it, it's worth a trip especially once the greens heal.
Tough Course, Good Cond.
The course was in good shape aside from the greens not yet grown in for the aeration. Fairways were good and rough was fair.
Not too many level shots on this course, but if you can keep it in play and can hold the greens, you should score well. Good Luck
Challenging Course
Difficult course. Excellent and helpful staff. We got stuck behind a slow group and the ranger was very proactive to help us play through and keep our round time manageable. Great day, great course.
Tank
Course wasn't the best when we played. The green was Sandy and bumpy. I will play there again in few month.
Challenging, Hilly Course
This is my third time playing Crystal Springs. It doesn't get easier. Long, hilly course with a lot of great views. Drives have to be perfect in order to have a flat lie. Good luck.
Spectacular 11th Hole (Classic 2)
The 11th hole is their signature hole on this course which is an elevated par 3. It is worth the greens fee alone!
The course is in good condition after a long winter. All of the greens were just aerated and some tee boxes need seed. However, the fairways are in excellent conditions and the traps have a powdery sand. The staff are overall very friendly,
Early in the season
It was great to play golf after the winter we had. Crystal Springs always is worth it.
Windy Crystal
It is early in the year, the course was wet from all of the recent rain. That meant it was cart path only. It was also extremely windy. Given the amount of out-of-bounds there is, it became quite challenging. The course was in very good shape, the greens were running true and reasonably quickly.
