Crystal Springs Golf Club
About
Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg touts a reputation of being not only the most challenging golf course in New Jersey, but also one of the most challenging layouts east of the Mississippi. The site filled with water after its use as a limestone quarry in 1929, which formed the natural springs on the 10th hole that the course is named after. The layout is definitely a shot-maker's course. Carefully sculpted mounding that frames the fairways and greens defines each hole. There is also tall and gnarly rough treacherously guarding the tight fairways. The golf course sits just a few miles from New Jersey's highest point, sprawling across an undulating terrain that makes it difficult to find an even lie. One of the most notably difficult, and subsequently the most talked about, holes is the 11th. The hole is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Windsor Quarry.

Always enjoy playing any of the courses here.
Never a worry that the courses here will be in great shape. The staff is always helpful and friendly. Not a easy course if you spray the ball off the tee, premium on good tee shots.
Not For Me
This course receives rave reviews from many people. I have no interest in ever playing this course again. You almost never hit off of a flat surface. Riding a cart around this place is like being on a roller coaster with twists and turns. You can't drive your cart near the greens so many times you need to take several clubs to your ball to determine what club you may need. The layout is also very strange. It is unusual to need to drive and drive to get to the next hole. The greens are very tricky. The most amazing hole is number 11. I could play that hole over and over again. Besides that, very few of the holes were memorable. Many people love this course. It is challenging and offers many different experiences. However, this course is not for me. It wasn't that it was overly challenging. Ballyowen is even more challenging but twice as much fun. I was able to get green fees and a cart for $25.00 at Crystal Spring on Golfnow.. I worked hard on every hole. Usually when I work that hard, I'm the one who gets paid. I loved Ballyowen. That's where I want to play when I go to this resort.
Tough course. Maintenance has taken a step backwards
Very challenging course. Maintenance is not as good as previous times I've played there. For the discount rate from golf now at 75 bucks on a Sunday morning it was a fair rate. Anything over that I would not play here for. Tee boxes were full of crab grass and uneven with many tee boxes under repair. Greens were true and fast.
Great conditions Tough course
I play this course once a year.....It's a nice (tough) course. Every hole will challenge you don't expect to post a score here
Overall it was in better condition then in the previous yrs. It's not a course for beginners or high handicappers some holes will make you want to quit golf. With that said it is a beautiful layout and every hole is a different experience.
beautiful venue
I paid $45 thru GOLFNOW. I thought it was a great value. Would I play it for $85? I'm not sure.
course is in very good cond.
i did not care for the ropes being 75 yards or more from greens if you are short of green requires you hit and then back to cart path move cart up to green making for a long round. there are many holes that cart path should be closer to the greens without changing the beauty of this course. you must play more times to know were to hit drives a lot of hidden trouble. bring your gps or supply of balls. i played during the week i could see weekend rounds being five hours or more.
Super challenging!
I'm a beginner/novice golfer and had a great time! I lost 20 balls because the course was so challenging and I'm not that good! We got a great deal on Golf Now and had a lot of fun.
Good Value
Booked @ $40 per person, it was good value for the money. The course was in good condition and definetly not an easy course. Not recommended for beginner/novice players.
Never finished...
So we tried playing this course again and again after 4 hrs we were not nearly finished still had 5+ holes to play. We let a twosome play though, then came up a few holes later to a different 3some in front of us, then about 2 holes later found ourselves behind yet another group. I think the issue with this course is everyone bounces around and skips holes as well as you have members who live close and jump in where they feel they can. There is no ranger keeping track of groups and making sure they are in proper position. Great, challenging course if you can deal with the delays and issues you may run into while playing.
toughest course I've played.
very tough course. Even with good tee shots it will be hard to find a flat lie. Excellent par 3 on the back. elevated about 200 feet excellent view.took multiple pictures. Parring the hole doesn't hurt. Will definitely return to play again. Bringlot of balls if you're high handicap.
Very challenging, but very good!
This was my second time playing Crystal Springs. It offers a very nice layout. It's very tough. It's long, but not super long. My favorite part about the course is the separation between holes. I love that, and you will notice it big time on this course. Must play.
Great and challenging course
It's a must play course, the fairways are tight so must find the middle, take a lot of balls.
A MUST PLAY.
This course is a real challenge. It was our first time here but will
not be our last. Great shape and a variety of holes to keep you
focused on your next shot. Accuracy is a must to score well.
The staff were great and the resort itself is stunning. Some great
views. Well worth the 50 mile trip.
Toughest of the Crystal Springs courses
I love playing Crystal Springs and not because I score so well but rather it is so satisfying when you do play well because if you lose your focus the numbers pile up pretty quickly. The first time or two that you play Crystal it can be visually intimidating but after a couple of rounds you realize there is more room than it appears from the tee box.
If you are not at least a bogey golfer though you should probably pass on Crystal otherwise you will go through golf balls like crazy!
Enjoy!
Hard to Find
Great course but hard to find. Its tucked in behind and abandoned hotel. Better markets on the road would be a great first step. Short game area could be better.
Great conditions, accuracy needed
Crystal Springs is a great course. Challenging in that many holes are narrow or have difficult approaches. You'll hear people refer to it as 'target golf' and its fairly accurate here. You're often better hitting a 5 or 3 wood off the tee for better accuracy than trying to bomb it with the driver. Conditions were great and greens were fantastic - fast and undulating. The course is very pretty - winding, up and around the sides of hills with mounds and traps that really make it look impressive. The only downside is you're often playing near homes. At $100 it's a bit on the pricey side. At 75-80 it's a real value. The whole layout there is top notch wtih a fantatic clubhouse and amenities.
Greens are very good
But other than the picturesque par 3 on the 12th hole (I believe), the course leaves a lot to be desired.
The biggest impediment to enjoying a round here is the distance between the holes and the amount of time it takes to transition from hole-to-hole; it is quite annoying!
There are few if any signs directing you through the condominium community. At one point, we got so lost, we had to knock on the door of a stranger's condo to obtain directions to the next hole.
Moreover, there are too many instances where the carts have to detour some 30 yards from the green; this significantly slows the round (if your ball lies on the far side, away from the cart path, opposite the green).
Moreover,we were told that we were an entire hole behind the next group at one point: my reaction to the ranger was,"you have to be kidding"! Like it was our fault that we got lost for more than 5 minutes between holes.
The positives, however, is that the greens are good (nice and fast), the course is challenging (although not very friendly to the golfer who is unfamiliar with the course). The par 3, 12th hole is almost worth the trip (I travelled from Eastern LI, and my two relatives were from Brisbane, Australia).
However, all-in-all, for $100 (on a Sunday), it is way overpriced in my opinion. Other than the 12th hole, it is nothing special.
I would put at least half of the 16 courses within 10 square miles from my home in Manorville vs. Crystal Springs any day (and that is not including superior LI courses such as Bethpage, Montauk, Island's End (I just love) and the Hamlet Willow Creek (also love) which are all better bangs-for-the-buck!
Nice track.
Some tight holes. You have to be pretty precise with your tee shots. Overall great course.
