Fox Hollow Golf Club
About
Fox Hollow Golf Course in Somerville sprawls across acres of rolling woodlands, offering dramatic elevation changes throughout the par-70 layout. Designed by local designer Hal Purdy, the abundant trees and hilly terrain have been deftly incorporated into the course. Originally built in 1967, the golf course was completely redesigned in 2000 to make it more challenging while at the same time improving its playability. Since its renovation, it has garnered a local following but it is still one of the better kept secrets of Somerset County, making it likely that golfers will be able to play the golf course regardless of the day or time. In addition to the course, there is also a practice facility with a grass driving range, a bunkered practice green, and an expansive putting green. One reason Fox Hollow G.C. is a popular choice, besides the enjoyable layout, is the affordability it offers.

First time played here. Great shape considering played late in year. Rollinghills beautiful views definitely be back in spring
Cart Path Bound
This course was a good time. The fairways and greens were very soft (wet) so the ball plugged on most shots.
First time playing and I will go back when it isn't Cart path only.
Busy day at Fox Hollow
Had a 12:30 tee time and I got to the course at 11:55 to find a line of carts at the first tee. Found out there was a small outing, but we were close to being on time. Staff did a nice job keeping us on time and getting everyone out.
With lots of players on the course there were some spots where the course showed some wear. Need more players to replace divots, fix ball marks and rake traps more often.
We were told that the greens were cut faster by the staff and they were right. Greens rolls well and they were quick. Stay below the hole.
Will play here again, but can’t see it being my home course when both the 9th and 18th holes end as par 3s.
What was I thinking?
I've been playing golf in this area for over 30 years. This is my first time playing at Fox Hollow - What was I thinking? I'm sad that this is my first instead of my 30th time. What a fun course! A few years ago I was at Murifield in Dublin OH and and thought they were sister courses. Where did all the elevation changes come from in the rolling Somerset Hills? The course was wet due to the unrelenting rain we've endured this season so it was cart path only. We were still able to finish our round in a little over 3 hours. Length isn't he challenge here rather the greens are almost universally elevated. The putting surfaces have a lot of movement in them and generally sloped back to front. Best to leave your approach under the hole or you're in for an adventure. Much like most courses in the area the bunkers were firm with just enough sand in them to make them playable. Leave the sand iron in the bag and grab your gap wedge otherwise you'll be bouncing into the ball. For as wet as it was, the greens held a lot of speed and rolled pretty true. Overall I really liked this course and need to put it in my playing rotation.
Pleasantly Surprised
1st time playing this course. My golf buddies and I found the course challenging and rewarding. The Greens were super fast and smooth. I recommend this course to players of all skill levels -- especially for the 'Hot Deal' price advertised. I feel if the course wasn't wet from the rain the night before, I would enjoyed the play even more.
Fun course
The layout was excellent. Conditions could’ve been better but with wacky summer this year no real complaints. Greens were speedy and sloped. Not a long course but challenging nonetheless.
Always a pleasure playing this course
I have played this Course several times this year and Inever disappointed the staff friendliness especially the young man behind the counter I forget his name but he was awesome ! The course it’s self is in great shape and greens run pretty fast and true tea boxes are in great shape their fairways also in great shape And then you go to the 19th hole pretty young lady inside was so friendly and was a great way to end the day play
Good lay out
It was 100 degrees out today an they said cart path only I asked why the said it rained Saturday
Since Saturday it has been an average of 95 degrees it was too hot for cart path only an the course was dry no water to drink on any holes
Was not a good management decision
Outstanding
Outstanding course used to be a private , now it’s open to the public. Billy Casper organization has taking over and they are doing a fine job . Golfer friendly great fairways Teebox an awesome greens. And we want to say thank you to Terry at the 19th hole outstanding food and an her great personality PS also the young fellow at the desk was very nice too !
Thanks for your feedback. We have a great team of people at the club, they are the ones that make it special.

Great Course - Challenging but fair
I played fox hollow for the first time yesterday and loved it. Fairly challenging course with a lot of elevation but played true. Will certainly by back. 5/5 and great value.
Needs a tree removal program
Played here for the first time this past weekend:
Routing - Very good piece of land and a lot of the holes make good use of it.
Greens - As others state, the greens are in good shape for a public course and relatively quick. However, I found the contours from green-to-green to be redundant. It seems every green is circular in shape, sloped back to front, with very little internal contour. You could place yourself on any green and not know what hole you were on.
Fairways - Lots of slope, makes for a lot of interesting side hill lies. In good condition.
Tee boxes - Lots of issues here. First, way too much slope on the tee boxes and impossible to find a level lie on many of the par 3's. Second, on most of the par 3's, the tees were placed on the side of the tee boxes with overhanging limbs blocking half of the green. This doesn't make a course tougher, all it does it slow down play and frustrate golfers. There were big backups on the par3's because overhanging limbs forced everyone to miss the green on the most penal side of the hole....makes no sense. Please do not place tees behind overhanging limbs, or even better, develop a tree trimming program to trim them back.
Pace of play - Way too slow. A Saturday morning tee off at 8am was a five hour round. For $90 I find that unacceptable. I can go play Bethpage Black for $75 in five hours, but I'm playing Bethpage Black and know that comes with the territory.. Rangers were out there in carts, but I never saw them actually talking to groups. They spent all of their time observing...maybe they think their mere presence was improving pace of play? It wasn't.
Overall - Great piece of land, good course routing and conditioning. But way too many trees that force lines off the tee and uninteresting green complexes.
Wooded holes/ placement course.
First time playing it was quiet here on a weekday. Second visit, the staff was super friendly (maybe new training/staff) was a little much actually, ha. This course is a shot makers course. Pulled driver on maybe 6 holes. Good if you can get it on a deal, would recommend. Like not love.
Will be coming back to this great course!
1st time here and I'm coming back! Beautifully maintained course with some of the best greens in the area. Hazards including mature trees, winding creeks and ponds along with undulating elevations on almost every hole made the course a challenge. But it also produced nice views throughout the course. This is a hidden gem and IMO well worth the price. Great service on the course (starter, grounds crew and drink cart) and off (bar/restaurant and pro shop).

Thank you for playing Fox Hollow and we appreciate your feedback. I want to respond to help advise future golfers that we indeed have water on the course - free bottled water in coolers on #5 and #14 and since #3 and #9 return to the clubhouse theres more water there. But the water is in coolers - not the typical jug in a stand that people look for, so it can be missed.. We also run a beverage cart and on especially hot days distribute towels soaked in ice water.
Thanks again
