Fox Hollow Golf Club
About
Fox Hollow Golf Course in Somerville sprawls across acres of rolling woodlands, offering dramatic elevation changes throughout the par-70 layout. Designed by local designer Hal Purdy, the abundant trees and hilly terrain have been deftly incorporated into the course. Originally built in 1967, the golf course was completely redesigned in 2000 to make it more challenging while at the same time improving its playability. Since its renovation, it has garnered a local following but it is still one of the better kept secrets of Somerset County, making it likely that golfers will be able to play the golf course regardless of the day or time. In addition to the course, there is also a practice facility with a grass driving range, a bunkered practice green, and an expansive putting green. One reason Fox Hollow G.C. is a popular choice, besides the enjoyable layout, is the affordability it offers.

Great Course - Challenging but fair
I played fox hollow for the first time yesterday and loved it. Fairly challenging course with a lot of elevation but played true. Will certainly by back. 5/5 and great value.
Needs a tree removal program
Played here for the first time this past weekend:
Routing - Very good piece of land and a lot of the holes make good use of it.
Greens - As others state, the greens are in good shape for a public course and relatively quick. However, I found the contours from green-to-green to be redundant. It seems every green is circular in shape, sloped back to front, with very little internal contour. You could place yourself on any green and not know what hole you were on.
Fairways - Lots of slope, makes for a lot of interesting side hill lies. In good condition.
Tee boxes - Lots of issues here. First, way too much slope on the tee boxes and impossible to find a level lie on many of the par 3's. Second, on most of the par 3's, the tees were placed on the side of the tee boxes with overhanging limbs blocking half of the green. This doesn't make a course tougher, all it does it slow down play and frustrate golfers. There were big backups on the par3's because overhanging limbs forced everyone to miss the green on the most penal side of the hole....makes no sense. Please do not place tees behind overhanging limbs, or even better, develop a tree trimming program to trim them back.
Pace of play - Way too slow. A Saturday morning tee off at 8am was a five hour round. For $90 I find that unacceptable. I can go play Bethpage Black for $75 in five hours, but I'm playing Bethpage Black and know that comes with the territory.. Rangers were out there in carts, but I never saw them actually talking to groups. They spent all of their time observing...maybe they think their mere presence was improving pace of play? It wasn't.
Overall - Great piece of land, good course routing and conditioning. But way too many trees that force lines off the tee and uninteresting green complexes.
Wooded holes/ placement course.
First time playing it was quiet here on a weekday. Second visit, the staff was super friendly (maybe new training/staff) was a little much actually, ha. This course is a shot makers course. Pulled driver on maybe 6 holes. Good if you can get it on a deal, would recommend. Like not love.
Will be coming back to this great course!
1st time here and I'm coming back! Beautifully maintained course with some of the best greens in the area. Hazards including mature trees, winding creeks and ponds along with undulating elevations on almost every hole made the course a challenge. But it also produced nice views throughout the course. This is a hidden gem and IMO well worth the price. Great service on the course (starter, grounds crew and drink cart) and off (bar/restaurant and pro shop).
hills and greens
Couldn't wait to play this course. It was private, then went semi private. Challenging hills and tough greens. Good for intermediate and better players.
Who placed that pin on #12
The course definitely has character, and style. The fairways, and greens are well manicured with fast greens. Unfortunately, the pin placement on #12 Par 3 is reckless. Being below, as I was is the optimum position, but down leave your uphill putt short. If you do, stay where you are and it'll roll right back to you! The course, and clubhouse staff, and chef are very friendly, and helpful. Food is prepared wonderfully, with plenty of flavor. I'd come here for lunch or dinner without playing.
Generally great conditions, but slow pace of play
Fox Hollow is a pretty challenging course. The hills and slopes can really have an effect on your round. Also, several of the greens are severely sloped so, if the grass is cut really short, putted balls easily roll of the green..
The course is always in great condition, except I do have minor complaints about the tee boxes and bunkers and a major complaint about the pace of play.
It is difficult to find a level location on some tee boxes. However, the condition of the tee boxes (that is, the grass) is excellent. They just need to regrade some of the tees.
The sand in the bunkers is a little rough - not dirt, but certainly not fine grain sand. It is more like really small pebbles and I get concerned that my clubs could be ruined hitting from the bunkers.
The pace of play can be horrible. When I last played, there were several 4-somes of older men in front of me (I am in my 60's so this is not a complaint of someone really young). I was a single, but they would not let me play through. I skipped a few holes to get in front of them and then played the skipped holes after finishing my round. I have encountered this before - and at least during the week, there is no ranger to make sure people observe good golf etiquette.
Great golf course
Terrific course. Elevations abound.
Not too many flat lies off the tee.
Very picturesque in a beautiful setting.
First cut off the fairway is quite fair but the thick rough,if you miss by more than just a couple of yards makes for a tough situation
I’d like to see the rough trimmed a bit.
The greens are terrific. Stay below the hole, downhill putts are quite difficult on most greens .
Very nice course
I haven't played this course in years but had an opportunity to go out with a couple of co-workers. For a Tuesday afternoon I couldn't believe how wide open the course was but that was fine - the pace of play for us was excellent and it was an enjoyable day out. The holes are not easy yet not overwhelmingly hard - a good mix of sand and water to make the course (and certain holes) somewhat challenging. I'll remember to make this course a destination at least a couple of times a year - hoping to get out there again before September.
Thanks for your review. The afternoon is off-peak in the middle of the week and we even offer free golf to kids after 3 PM with a paying adult. Spread the word and I hope to see you there again soon.

Solid course
Very nice course with good conditions. The only downside was that the sand traps had some sort of fake sand that was very hard and almost like playing on concrete.
good placement golf
Played here before, like it a lot. you don't need to be long here although it helps, but you need to be accurate and be able to set up your next shot. I do believe there are new owners or management, maybe that has something to do with the new pricing. Its a little pricy, You can find better courses for the same price. Plus no real half way house, you have to go inside and upstairs to get food. They need to figure that out. Im sure i will be back though.
Thanks for playing our course. Yes, we are new owners and purchased it in February. Your comment about the half-way house is spot-on, we saw the same problem and until we can build one we have an outdoor grille on weekends. We also run two beverage carts on busy days.
We do encourage golfers to call in their food order and we will run it out to you.
We try to be priced competitively but sometimes can't match the price of local taxpayer-supported courses owned by the counties (who don't pay real estate and other taxes).
We do offer many time slot options, with afternoons as low as $35 even in the height of the season.
I hope to see you out there again soon. I think our superintendent, Tim, is delivering great course conditions. Also, in August we get a new $400,000 fleet of golf carts, the best in the industry.
Insect Problems
This was our first time golfing here. The staff was great and we even got out early. The course conditions were good except for the insects. This course has a lot of water with a river that runs through the course. The bugs and gnats were terrible. Not sure what can be done about it but I doubt we will return.
I'm glad you had a good experience with the staff and found the conditions good. Sorry that we can't do anything about the bugs. The expensive private clubs in the area, also on the same river, have the same issue in the early spring - although the local trout fisherman love it!
Although, honestly, nobody has ever complained about it before, so maybe you caught it on an unusual day.
The "spring hatch" has passed so please come on out again.

Charming Course
Short course with a few long par 5's and 3's.....in great shape. The bugs were troublesome so bring bugspray saw all sorts of animals. Course is very nice but full of character, there are a few hidden shots that can be almost unfair so take care to view the scorecard to know what you are getting into before you hit those blind shots. Played in a twosome and it took over 3 hours but I think it was just the group in front of us...still an active ranger could have helped
Great course with real nice layout. Overall course in great shape. Greens had been aerated, but the price paid was well worth it. Would play again. For sure.
Thanks so much. Hope to see you there again soon. Please download our app and receive specials from time to time. Have a great golf season.

Great find
first time playing the course - facit-lities great -
unfortunately after a lot of rain cart path only and high rough - on a regular day this is a great track and all would love to play it - fantastic restaurant 19th hole
The rough is rediculous
To many blind landing areas and the rough was rediculous. Couldn’t even find your ball if youbwere a foot in the rough. Cut it back everything feeds into it.
Thanks for coming out to Fox Hollow. The rough was deep the day you golfed, following so many days of rain where we could not get the mowers out. I hope you come back to play agin. The greens were aerated last week and are all healed and are putting great and our new chef is making great fans with his new menu.

Thanks for coming out. I think our greens are some of the best in NJ and the views from the peak of the property are a hidden secret. Glad you had a good round.
