Mastodon Golf Club
Situated midway between Hebron and Newark, Mastodon Golf Club (formerly known as Burning Tree Golf Course) is an 18-hole layout whose location has unique historical significance. In 1989 while digging a new pond for the course, a crewmember discovered fossils of the extinct American Mastodon. Although the original skeleton resides in Japan, the course is home to a full-sized replica as well as over 150 other replicas of both dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals. The museum-quality replicas make the golf course a fun place for families. In addition to the natural history lesson it offers, the course also provides a relaxing round that players of any skill level will enjoy. The regulation-length course has a classic layout that is both accessible and a fair challenge. The affordable rates make Burning Tree even more appealing.

Not at all happy with this course. Fairways look like most place's rough. The greens are very spongy and several have piles of goose feces on them. And lastly there was a guy playing the course with no shoes on that management did nothing about. After being very displeased after 9 holes I went to the club house to see about a refund for the other 9. Only to be told that they have no control over what the geese do and they would give me a rain check for the other 9. Well why aren't you out cleaning up the feces throughout the day and what on earth makes you think I want to golf here again?

Fairways no better than rough, greens slow and bumpy. Nice layout, but needs some tlc
Day at Burning Tree
The course is decent for the price. It’s layout is odd but offers some challenging shots.
This course was not in good shape. The fairways were long and patchy and the greens were slow and full of fungus or dead spots. This course needs some attention.
Last time I will ever play that course again
Course was full of dandelions which shows the maintenance of the course.
No mowing was prevalent on the entire course.
Very disappointing from all of the good reviews written by other people. I would bet it was the employee writing the reviews. The dandelions were so bad I lost balls in the middle of the fairway
as usual, well worth it !
have played here for many years and always come back for more, nice course and the folks are the best! the greens putt well and the back nine is a little tricky. dont spray it around back there!
this course can throw you a curve
i have played this course hundreds of times and know the owners very well. the course is always well cared for and the owners always make you feel welcome. course is fair but the greens can be sneaky fast.back nine is a couple of strokes easier than the front.
Love coming to thIs course, wide open front 9, tight back 9. The staff is always so nice and courteous!!!
Great beginner's course.
This course allows the golfer to work on the short game, while providing somewhat of a challenge with some blind spots. Overall the course is great for those golfers just starting out. I will play here again sometime.
Tee boxes needed mowing, need more signs to guide you to the next tee boxes, cart path was a maze. Greens patchy.
Nice course for money
Course was in good shape. Greens were fairly well kept, which for the small price paid to golf here was very surprising. Front nine very open, back nine much tighter. Great value for $ spent.
Not worth the drive
It was a hot deal and I wouldn't play more than that for the round. nice newer carts, if you like to play up and back golf and play from other fairways other than your own than this is the place for you. I can stand on 5 fairway and see every hole on the front 9.
Burning tree just fair
The layout of the course is interesting with some challenges. However the greens are so bad with high grass and a lot of bare spots.
course is usually better than now.
i have played this course hundreds of times and the owners are friends of mine. however we had a tough summer last year and they lost some greens and they have not recovered yet. i'm sure they will get them fixed this year. the staff is the best and the course is very fun to play.
When I first played here using a severe discounted price I was prepared for poor conditions. I was very pleasantly surprised, and have since returned for another round.
While the course shows effects of harsh, hot summer, in general it is very playable and challenging. I noticed previous comments about gimmicky or tight holes, difficulty following signage etc. but it only took one round to figure those out.
Interestingly, I found the greens very moist also...allowing shots at the green, where most public courses would be rock hard and bounce off.
All in all I got way more than I paid for...and will be going back again!
